Our goal with the apprenticeship program is to support and retain apprentices within JVDG. We accomplish this goal by providing apprentices with support and mentorship while ensuring our
business remains compliant with provincial legislation.

3. Definitions
Apprentice – A person who works for another in order to learn a trade Apprentice Indentured Authorization Form – A form created to track and
monitor individuals whom are wanting to start an apprenticeship Apprenticeship Information Form – A request form for an employee to
request challenging exams, or time recommendation Blue Book/Log Book – A record book to which work-based training hours
are recorded Cancellation – To make void; revoke; annul Compulsory - Required; mandatory; obligatory: to uphold an apprenticeship
certification or journeyperson certification Contract Registration Date – The date in which the apprenticeship has
commenced Dual-Ticketed – An individual upholds two trade certifications; either
journeyperson or apprenticeship Effective date – The date in which the tradesperson is has become a
journeyperson Employer Declaration Letter – A letter prepared by the proper signing
authority for an Alberta employer that is to provide all necessary information in order to challenge the journeyperson exam
Hours Letter – A letter stating the hour, trade, and dates worked for an employer
Indentured – A contract by which a person, as an apprentice, is bound to service
Interprovincial Red Seal - Tradespeople who hold a valid certificate with a Red Seal can work anywhere in Canada, without further training or examination.
Issue date – The date in which the journeyperson’s certification was printed Journeyman – A person who has served an apprenticeship at a trade or
handicraft and is certified to work at it assisting or under another person Legislation - A law or a body of laws enacted Mentor – An influential senior sponsor or supporter Non-Compliant – Failure or refusal to comply, as with a law, regulation, or
term of a contract Non-Compulsory – Optional, recommended, an occupation does not require
a trade certification Occupation - Designated occupations recognize skills and competencies
achieved either through on-the-job training or formal training provided by industry. Designated occupations do not require a certificate or participation in a training program to work in and learn the occupation

Primary Apprenticeship – The trade in which an individual has been hired with proper certification, and performs majority of skills and duties in “said” trade
Qualification Examination – An examination in which an employee can challenge the journeyperson certification
Recognized Credential (Qualification Certificate Program) – A program under which a person who holds a credential that is recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship Industry and Training Board may be able to obtain and Alberta trade certificate.
Recommendation Letter – Work-based training hours accredited prior to employee contract registration date
Reinstate - To put back or establish again, as in a former position or state Release of Personal Information – A form in which personal information
can be released to the employee requesting Scope of Work – safe working procedures and conditions,
incident/injury prevention, and the preservation of health are the primary importance
Secondary Apprenticeship – An additional trade to the primary apprenticeship in which an employee holds a valid certification
Technical Training – Schooling and exams required for “said” trades Trade - Designated trades and occupations are careers that are regulated by
the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act . Designated trades have an apprenticeship program. When a trade is designated, it has either a compulsory or optional certification.
Work Experience (Qualification Certificate Program) – Work experience provides experienced tradespeople with an opportunity to have their work, skills, and knowledge assessed against the standards for certification in a designated trade
Work-Based Training Hours – Hours worked in “said” trade
As an apprentice, you are responsible for your own apprenticeship. This includes, logging hours,
updating log books/blue books, and maintaining an

active status with the provincial jurisdiction of registration.
4. Apprenticeship Application Approval Process
Process:
Apprenticeship Application Approval Process
The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) must approve all applications to apprenticeship boards within North America. This includes but is not limited to:
Apprenticeship Application and Contract Qualification Application – Recognized Credential Qualification Application – Work Experience Reinstatement Apprenticeship Application and Contract
Note: An application may be cancelled if it is submitted without the Leduc apprenticeship coordinator(s) approval.
Procedure:

Apprenticeship Application and Contract:(Reinstatement Apprenticeship Application and Contract)
Employee must complete an Apprenticeship Application and Contract Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) is responsible for approving and submitting
every Apprenticeship Application and Contract to the appropriate Provincial Apprenticeship Board.
Qualification Application:(Recognized Credential/Work Experience)
Employee is to complete a Qualification Application – Work Experience or Qualification Application - Recognized Credential
Employee must complete Release of Personal Information and Apprenticeship Information request form and submit to the Apprenticeship Coordinator(s)
The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) will review the Qualification Application to ensure proper information is documented
The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) will draft an Employer Declaration Letter

5. Apprenticeship Application Fees
Process:
Apprenticeship Application Fees
The apprentice is responsible for the payment of the Apprenticeship Application and Contract fee, prior to the commencement of performing any on-site skills and duties specific to the trade. This includes but is not limited to:
Apprenticeship Application and Contract Qualification Application – Recognized Credential Qualification Application – Work Experience Reinstatement Apprenticeship Application and Contract
Procedure:

Apprenticeship Application and Contract:(Reinstatement Apprenticeship Application and Contract)
Employer approves and submits the Apprenticeship Application and Contract Email confirmation is sent out to employer and employee, indicating the
application fee is now due Employee is to provide payment prior to the commencement of performing
any on-site skills or duties specific to the tradeQualification Application:(Recognized Credential/Work Experience)
Employer approves and submits the Qualification Application – Work Experience or Qualification Application – Recognized Credential
Email confirmation is sent out to employer and employee, indicating the application fee is now due
Employee is to provide payment prior to the commencement of performing any on-site skills or duties specific to the trade

In the event of the employee neglecting to pay their application fee, the Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) will notify on-site Human Resources to ensure this individual is temporarily removed from performing any on-site skills or duties specific to the trade. The employee may return to work after providing a receipt of payment, signaling that the fee has been paid.
6. Cancellation of Apprenticeship
Process:
Cancellation of Apprenticeship
The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) is responsible for the communication of all cancelled apprenticeships or applications within JV Driver. This includes but is not limited to:
Apprenticeship Application and Contract Qualification Applications - Recognized Credential Qualification Application – Work Experience Reinstatement Apprenticeship Application and Contract
Note: An apprenticeship or application that is cancelled is considered non-compliant in a compulsory trade. These individuals are not legally able to perform duties within the scope of work for the specific trade.
Procedure:
Cancellation of Apprenticeship
An Apprenticeship Application and Contract will be cancelled due to one or more of the following reasons:
- Neglect to register or attend Technical Training- Neglect to progress within current trade level- Neglect to pay $35 processing fee
A Qualification Application – Work Experience or Qualification Application – Recognized Credential will be cancelled due to one or more of the following reasons:
- Neglect to submit an Employer Declaration Letter- Neglect to register for Provincial Examination - Neglect to pay processing fee (Recognized Credential)

- Neglect to pay processing fee (Work Experience)- Two failed attempts to pass Provincial Examination - Cannot provide minimum require Work Based Training Hours and
months

A cancellation notification will be sent to onsite Human Resources Human Resources is to advise the cancelled apprentice of the following

Qualification Application:(Recognized Credential/Work Experience)
Scenario 1: Qualification Application with an active Apprenticeship. So long as the individual is an active apprentice in a compulsory trade, the cancelled Qualification Application does not prevent the Apprentice from working in said “trade”
a. Individual may resume working as an apprenticeb. Reapply for the Qualification Application
Scenario 2: Qualification Application with a cancelled Apprenticeship If an individual has a cancelled apprenticeship in a compulsory trade, the cancelled Qualification Application will prevent the Apprentice from working in said “trade”
a. Reinstate Apprenticeshipb. Reapply for the Qualification Application c. Demoted to a Laborer positiond. Removed from site
Scenario 3: Qualification Application with no Apprenticeship If an individual has no apprenticeship in a compulsory trade, the cancelled Qualification Application will prevent the Apprentice from working in said “trade”

The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) must sign off on all apprenticeship documentation. This includes but is not limited to:

Employer Declaration Letters are to be drafted by the Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) once a company specific Release of Personal Information and Apprenticeship Information Request Form have been received

Note: Only approved signatories for JV Driver Group are permitted to sign any/all apprenticeship documentation that will be submitted to the
designated apprenticeship boards. Any documentation that is submitted to any designated apprenticeship board, that does not have an approved
signature, will be declined.
8. Non-Compulsory Ticketed vs. Non-Compulsory Non-Ticketed
Process:
Non-Compulsory Ticketed vs. Non-Compulsory Non-Ticketed
Non-Compulsory apprentices and journeypersons will have the option during time of hire to provide the recruitment team with documentation that will determine their rate of pay. The following documentation can be submitted to recruiters for verification:
1. Apprenticeship or Journeyperson Certification (if applicable)2. Documented hours worked in “said” trade
The employee must choose one of the listed options. Once they have chosen an option, the employee cannot use their hours in addition to their apprenticeship certification if applicable.
Procedure:
Non-Compulsory Ticketed vs. Non-Compulsory Non-Ticketed
Option 1: (Apprenticeship Certification)
The employee being hired will provide the recruitment team with their apprenticeship certification. The apprenticeship certification will be verified with their prospective provincial apprenticeship board.
The employee will be paid according to their level of verification
Option 2: (Documented Hours)
The employee being hired will provide the recruitment team with proper documentation in order to verify the hours worked in their trade.

9. Apprenticeship Levels & Rate Changes
Process:
Apprenticeship Levels & Rate Changes
Apprentices will be paid according to their level of verification, based on their provincial certification. In order for them to qualify for a rate change, the Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) must verify the below information with the province of issue:
Compulsory Trades – Documented Hours & Technical Training Non-compulsory Trades- Documented Hours
Procedure:
Apprenticeship Level & Rate Changes
Option 1: (Returns to work for JV Driver Group after attending school)
The apprentice’s return to work date will be the day that they receive a wage increase providing that they have the appropriate dated documentation. This documentation must include exam results that indicate the apprentice has successfully passed their program level theory exam. The documents must be submitted within 4 weeks, in order to receive the retro-active wage increase.
Option 2: (Apprentice challenges the exam while working for JV Driver Group)
Upon successful completion of the Qualification Examination or Period/Block Examination the apprentice must provide appropriate dated documentation to their supervisor. It is then the supervisor’s responsibility to submit a rate change to initialize a wage increase.
Option 1 & 2 will need to follow the guidelines listed below:1. The apprentice will have 4 weeks from the date of their exam to submit their Qualification Examination or Period/Block results. Once they have

successfully passed and have provided the appropriate dated documentation, they will then be considered to be retroactively paid from the date of their exam. 2. Once the apprentice has passed their Journeyman certificate exam, they will be able to submit their journeyman certification. The employee then has 4 weeks from the date of issue to submit for a rate change. At that time, the journeyman will get retroactively paid by the effective date.3. If the apprentice fails to provide appropriate dated documentation before the 4 week deadline, their pay will increase at the time in which the supervisor initializes a wage increase.
10. Foreman Requirements
Process:
Foreman Requirements
In order for an employee to be promoted or hired into a Foreman position, the employee must uphold the following credentials:
Compulsory Trade:(Mandatory Requirements)
The mandatory requirement is a verified provincial Journeyman Certification (this includes: Journeyman Certification, Qualification Certification, Interprovincial Red Seal)
Non-Compulsory Trade:(Recommended Requirements)
The recommendation for a non-compulsory trade is a verified provincial Journeyman Certification or verified Technical Training and minimum required hours
All requirements must adhere to the JV Driver Safety Manual, Alberta Apprenticeship Industry and Training Board, as well as OH&S policies.
Procedure:
Foreman Requirements
Compulsory Trade: All Craft Employees must submit all mandatory documentation to onsite
Human Resources prior to entering into a Foreman Position.

11. General Foreman Requirements

General Foreman Requirements
In order for an employee to be promoted or hired into a General Foreman position, the employee must uphold the following credentials:
Compulsory Trade:(Recommended Requirements)
The recommendation for a non-compulsory trade is a verified provincial Journeyman Certification (this includes: Journeyman Certification, Qualification Certification, Interprovincial Red Seal)
If the employee does not hold a valid Journeyman Certification (this includes: Journeyman Certification, Qualification Certification, and Interprovincial Red Seal) they cannot be directing crews, or working on the tools.
Non-Compulsory Trade:(Recommended Requirements)
The recommendation for a non-compulsory trade is a verified provincial Journeyman Certification or verified Technical Training and minimum required hours
All requirements must adhere to the JV Driver Safety Manual, Alberta Apprenticeship Industry and Training Board, as well as OH&S policies.

General Foreman Requirements

documentation to onsite Human Resources prior to entering into a General Foreman Position.

12. Indenturing Apprentices
Process:
Indenturing Apprentices
In order for an employee to be indentured into an Apprenticeship Agreement, the employee will have to meet the following criteria:
Minimum of 90 days worked for JV Driver Group Must be an open requisition for “said” trade Superintendent(s) (of both trades) must support and approve the agreement
Procedure:
Indenturing Apprentices
The employee must complete Indentured Apprentice Authorization Form have met the minimum requirements and submit the following information:
Province of which the employee would like to start an apprenticeship Trades of choice (the employee will only be allowed to choose 2 trades)Once the employee has submitted the Indentured Apprentice Authorization Form for potential apprenticeship, they will have 30 days to job shadow and be mentored within the “said” trade(s). After the 30 days is complete, the employee will decide what trade they will be indentured into. During the job shadow phase of 30 days, the employee will not receive any
time recommendation to the potential tradePlease note: before an apprentice can be indentured, they Apprenticeship Coordinator must ensure the following requirement is met: Journeyman must be present on-site

Note: The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) will not approve any previous work-based training hours listed in the recommendations section on the
Apprenticeship Application and Contract.
13. Accrediting Hours – Dual Trade Certified
Process:
Accrediting Hours – Dual Trade Certified
The Apprenticeship Coordinator(s) must verify that hours being accredited to dual ticketed Apprentice/Journeyman complete and submit the Dual-Ticketed Approval Authorization Form, approved by their superintendent. By submitting this form, the employee is choosing to abide by one of the following four preferences:
Agreement 1: Journeyman Certification & Apprentice Certification
Any individual receiving a Journeyman wage, with a secondary apprenticeship, will only be accredited up to 50% of their work-based training hours, pending their Superintendents’ approval.
Agreement 2: Journeyman Certification & Apprentice Certification
Any individual receiving a Journeyman wage that has been indentured into a secondary apprenticeship will be accredited 100% of their work-based training hours, so long as their wage reflects their current level of apprenticeship. Pending their Superintendents’ approval.
Agreement 3: Apprentice Certification & Apprentice Certification
Any individual receiving their primary apprentice wage, with a secondary apprenticeship, and chooses to not have their work-based training hours divided, will receive 100% of their work-based training hours in primary trade.
Agreement 4: Apprentice Certification & Apprentice Certification
Any individual receiving their primary apprentice wage, with a secondary apprenticeship, and chooses to have their work-based training hours divided, will receive 50% of their work-based training hours to both trades.

Note: The employee must be actively working in both trades in order to receive their work-based training hours

By choosing one of the above agreements, the employee acknowledges that they are responsible to adhere to the stipulations set forth by JV Driver Group and superintendent. The employee also acknowledges that they must be actively working in both trades.
During the employee’s duration of employment with JV Driver Group, they may opt to change their agreement for any given reason. If the employee chooses to change their agreement, another Dual-Ticketed Approval Authorization Form must be approved and submitted to the Apprenticeship Coordinator(s).
