Introduction

Welcome to the Gen2 Apprenticeship Information Guide for 2014. By now you will probably be thinking about your future and what to do after you leave school or college? This can be a daunting experience so Gen2 are here to offer you the best possible start and the first step towards a highly rewarding career.

By choosing an Apprenticeship, you will be able to train on the job using state of the art machinery and equipment. You will be taught by industry leading specialists, all whilst becoming qualified and receiving a wage. You will be getting your first step onto a career ladder with real prospects and gaining skills that are essential for industry and are recognised by employers nationally.

The following pages are designed to inform you of the various Apprenticeship disciplines offered by Gen2, allowing you to decide which Apprenticeship will best suit your unique skills and interests.

If you would like any of the information within this booklet in a different format (e.g. large print,) please contact a member of the HR team on 01900 701300.

Gen2 apprenticeships

The company currently trains 1,000 apprentices and our Apprenticeship programmes are becoming increasingly popular as employers and young people realise the benefits of an Apprenticeship.

During your Apprenticeship, dependent on your ability, you will have the opportunity to progress from an apprenticeship to a Higher Apprenticeship. From there, you can continue with further learning, to gain higher qualifications all the way to University and beyond.

Gen2 has been delivering exceptional apprenticeship training for over a decade and continues to be the leading trainer of Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear and Systems & Control Apprenticeships in Cumbria. We have also been awarded a Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ in our most recent Ofsted inspection.

Your employment prospects with a Gen2 Apprenticeship couldn’t be better. In the last ten years, over 2000 apprentices have been trained by Gen2, with 94% of them progressing into full-time employment with their employer.

Competition for a place with Gen2 can be tough. The earlier you apply the more chance you have of being considered by an employer. Throughout the recruitment process, you will need to show commitment and awareness of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who would employ you.

If you are successful, your place will be dependent on you achieving the grades required. Whilst these grades are a minimum, GCSE’s will stay with you throughout your career therefore it is important to try and achieve the best results you can.

Gen2 currently offer training in a diverse range of apprenticeships including:

• Electrical• Electrical Design• Mechanical• Mechanical Design• Fabrication / Welding • Nuclear Operator • Business & Administration • Process Operations• Scientific• Higher Engineering Apprenticeship

Please note: The services we deliver have been financed in whole or part, by the European Social Fund.

• Warehousing• Pipefitting• Customer Service• Control Systems• ICT• Health Physics Monitor• Project Management• HR

Information, advice & guidance

The aim of this service is to provide you with impartial and effective information, advice and guidance that will lead to tailored solutions for your individual needs, goals and future career requirements.

The information, advice and guidance received throughout the apprenticeship programme will be provided from a range of Gen2 staff including Trainers, Administrators, Managers, Human Resource Personnel as well as Apprentices currently studying with Gen2.

Gen2 offer a mentoring scheme to learners. A mentor will typically be a member of the training staff. The support provided is to ensure that you are able to meet your full potential. You will be allocated a support trainer who will review and assess your progress throughout the programme and can be approached for information, advice and guidance at any stage throughout the apprenticeship. Furthermore, Gen2 will support you in finding an employer placement and provide you with advice and guidance on producing CVs and improving your interview skills. All information, advice and guidance will be provided in complete confidence.

From there you can continue with further learning and gain higher qualifications all the way to university and beyond. This will depend upon employer support.

What’s the difference between an Advanced Apprenticeship and Higher Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship will typically last between12-15 months and you will gain a Level 2 NVQ depending on the individual trade areas you study.

Where will my training take place? Where you train will depend on two factors. One is the apprenticeship you decide upon, and the other is where you live. In most cases you will simply train at the Skills Centre that is closest to where you live. However, certain apprenticeships are only available from specific Skills Centres. For example, if you live in Carlisle, but wanted to undertake the Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship, it would be down to you to secure your own travel arrangements to Workington as this particular Apprenticeship is only available at the Energus facility, West Cumbria.
