On behalf of Penticton Council, Staff and Citizens, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the many volunteers who will be dedicating their time and talents during the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling presented by Monsanto.

Part of the secret of the success of events of this magnitude has been the dedicated volunteers who’ve helped make them happen. Volunteers are the most important resource community organizations have.

We wish to acknowledge the efforts of the organizing committee, volunteers and all of the sponsors involved. Your hard work and dedication ensures the event’s success.

The City of Penticton looks forward to hosting one of international curling’s most prestigious championships.

Welcome from the City of Penticton

Mayor Dan Ashton

Meet your Executive… MICHELLE PRATT is the perfect choice for Director of Curling Club Promotions and Junior Stars with her genuine interest in curling, along with her contacts in the curling community. Club promotions started with Michelle making her first presentation to the Oliver Curling Club on May 18th with visits to other curling clubs in the area being scheduled.

Curling has been part of Michelle’s life since she started playing in Oliver, BC at the age of 13. A proud achievement was being on the winning 1985-1986 High School Championship girls team with teammates Julie Sutton (Skinner), Jodie Sutton (Green), and Theresa Ziebart. She is no stranger to competitive curling.

A member of the Penticton Curling Club since 1996, Michelle truly appreciates the sense of community that comes with being part of a local club. In fact, that’s where she met her husband Allen.

Curlers develop a kinship with fellow curlers, something Michelle has experienced through travels to countless out-of-town bonspiels over the years. And, she has seen it happen when newcomers to Penticton join the curling club and are welcomed with open arms. Taking part as a volunteer brings the same sense of connection to the community.

“Volunteering is a great way to benefit your community, meet interesting people, gain experience and often a chance to learn something new, all the while forging friendships,” says Michelle. “It really just feels good to help out and to be part of something bigger than your day to day routine.”

Michelle has a history of volunteering: • Volunteer of the Year in 2003 • Chair of the 2004 B.C. Mixed Provincials • Director of Officiating for the 2008 B.C. Men’s

Provincials • Director for the 2010 Women’s Provincials • Director, Curling Club Promotions and Junior Stars

for the 2013 Continental Cup

Michelle is organizing a “Mixed Doubles” Bonspiel for November or December at the Penticton Curling Club so people can experience first hand this format, which is unique to the WFG Continental Cup. She has plenty of promotion ideas and could use a hand or two – “You Gotta Be There!”

We have a number of great sponsors on board already. We thank them for their support and financial contribution. We hope that you will show your support to our sponsors for making this event possible.

There are some great ticket packages available with choice seating. We are finding that ticket sales are slow this time of year, however we expect that things will pick up once curling season begins. Although all the seating at SOEC is fantastic, the best seats will go first, so encourage your family and friends to buy soon. This and future newsletters are designed to provide information on upcoming rallies and other exciting news. All volunteers are invited to our first Volunteer Rally on Tuesday, June 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Penticton Curling Club. I look forward to working with you over the next seven months.

Summer is here and that means water sports and outdoor activities like gardening, boating, cycling, golfing and tennis. We wait all winter for this!

Can people who wear hearing aids enjoy these activities too? Yes they can! Today’s water resistant hearing aids provide outstanding protection from moisture, humidity, sweat and dirt without compromising sound quality. Visit a local Connect Hearing for a Two Week Free Trial and see for yourself how good summer can sound! 1.800.563.4327 (HEAR) or connecthearing.ca.

Now that you have made the decision to represent our community as a volunteer at the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup – YOU are there! For some of you it has already begun, while others eagerly anticipate the start of the event to make their contribution. Without all of YOU, the volunteers, we would not be able to hold this fantastic event.

In the very near future your Director will contact you with information on the first Volunteer Rally. At this time you will pay your $100 volunteer fee (Visa, MC, Debit, Cash or Cheque), get sized for your uniform, and have your accreditation photos done. This is also a great opportunity to meet your Director and fellow volunteers. Out-of-town volunteers who cannot attend the rally please contact December Foster at 778-476-6063 to complete your registration. There will be a second rally in the fall where you will receive your uniform, accreditation, along with instructions about your work schedule from your Director.

Watch for fun events and activities planned for around town over the summer as we “Paint the Town” to promote the event. If you have any questions or just want to say see what’s up, please stop by the office in Cherry Lane and say ‘hi’ to December.

The most important thing to remember is that we are all here to have a great time and make this the most positive experience we can. Thank you for joining our team.

You Gotta Be There!

Bev Dunne has been curling since she was in Grade Seven. She has a Level One Certification for Officiating and loves timekeeping. However at the 2006 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship in Grande Prairie Bev put her skills to use with the Ceremonies committee. She was responsible for assembling teams, pipers, and fellow volunteers for their march prior to each draw.

Bev loves working in the event office because she gets to meet all kinds of interesting people. “Working with December is like a dream come true,” said Bev when asked what she likes about volunteering in the office. Plus, she gets all her volunteer time in BEFORE the event, which will free up time for her to focus on watching curling, curling, and more curling in January! She is most excited about the WFG Continental Cup because of the calibre of curling she will be watching and also having the opportunity to see and meet the World’s best curlers. She is particularly thrilled to see Kevin Martin.

Thank you Bev! For all your great work and for always answering the phone when we call and ask you to come in!

Gateway airport to the games Kelowna International Airport (KIA) is your gateway to the Okanagan Valley, BC’s wine region and this January to the World Financial Group Continental Cup in Penticton. They are proud to be the sponsor providing international access to the area for athletes, coaches, and fans. KIA is one of North America’s fastest growing airports.

Dedicated to your success – Meet your office staff Terry Morris is your 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling Event Manager. Terry comes from Sherwood Park, Alberta and has experience with the Canadian Curling Association event management process since 2004.

TERRY MORRIS Event Manager

I would like to thank all the volunteers that have registered and made a commitment to volunteer for the Penticton version of the 2013 WFG Continental Cup. This event will be a great boost for the City of Penticton in a season where there is not a lot of tourist activity in the community.

This is all about the volunteer experience. You as volunteers will have the opportunity to meet “household name” curlers from Canada, USA, Europe and the Pacific Rim. You have the opportunity to experience an event that is packed full of activities from morning to night over four days. I will be working with all the directors of your committees to ensure you have a memorable event.

I will meet a lot of people during my stay in Penticton and will make a lot of new friends and I am sure I know when I move on after the event there will be a tear in my eye. Anytime you want to chat about the event or have some great ideas contact me through the event office.

World Financial Group of Canada (WFG) is excited to announce and share with the curling family, the new look and feel of WFG. You may remember the “woosh” logo from our past Continental Cup events but we have decided to develop a new brand and identity. The new WFG mark has a cleaner, more professional look and symbolizes the door of opportunity offered by WFG to our associates, and their clients. The slate gray tones and bright burgundy accent exude modern professionalism.

You may have also noticed that we’ve dropped the words, ‘World Financial Group’ from our logo. This helps lend cleanliness to our new brand as well as a more comfortable, conversational feel. Additionally, keeping WFG’s new service- and support-based roles in mind, we developed this mark to provide our associates a renewed sense of confidence and credibility in the field.

While spring is in the air throughout the Okanagan Valley, volunteers for the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling have been hard at work promoting one of the elite sporting events of the winter season – coming to Penticton, January 10th to 13th.

A dedicated group of volunteers joined Event Assistant December Foster on May 10th for the Summerland Chamber of Commerce “Business After Hours” trade show at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. The Continental Cup crew was part of the more than 60 exhibitors on hand to meet with chamber members attending from Osoyoos to Vernon.

Congratulations to door prize winners Tina Belanger from Kelowna who took home a “Ferbey Four” book and Ron Norbin who won the “Golf Gift Basket” donated by SecurTek… as well as December who entered every draw at the show and was rewarded with a gift basket from Summerland Seniors Village!

The Host Committee extends special thanks to volunteers Chris Jones and Paul Van den Berg for their help setting up and taking down the event booth.

Spring also marked the official opening of the World Financial Group Continental Cup event office April 25th in the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre. Guests included Vice-Chairs and Directors of the

organizing committee, members of Penticton City Council, sponsors, media partners and mall tenants.

Black Iron Grill & Steakhouse served a tasty selection of food and wine and Cathy Jones contributed her

exceptional decorating talents, along with items from her store Random Thoughts. Door prizes were donated by event sponsors: SecurTek, Home Hardware Building Centre, Cherry Lane Shopping Centre, Kelowna International Airport and Sherwood Trophies, Signs & Sportswear.

The office will be open to welcome volunteers and the general public Monday to Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

So many people have already demonstrated their commitment to ensuring the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup is a roaring success when it comes to the Okanagan Events

Centre this January. But, Bev Dunne stands out as the Volunteer of the Month for holding down the fort in the event office dealing with customer inquiries, ticket sales and volunteer sign-ups.
