Largest Crowd Ever Gathers In NickelPark For Canada's Birthday Celebration

A wonderful evening of exciting enter-tainment was in store for those whoattended the Canada Day celebration inCopper Cliffs Nickel Park recently.While July 4 is particularly special toAmericans, Sudbury area residentscelebrated on that day only becauseinclement weather had left themno choice.

The delay seemed worthwhile, as thecrowd settled down across the park toenjoy a fine summer evening, plenty ofcompany and the music of the SudburySilver Band.

Turnout for the evening was plentifulas the crowd, estimated at ten thousand,sat back on the green grass and enjoyedthe music portion of the show, which wassponsored by Inco and the SudburyFederation of Musicians.

None of the thunderclouds that hadcaused the concerts three-day delaycould be seen in the sky. However,the sky did turn out to be the centre ofattention after the sun went down, as agiant fireworks display exploded over thepark, courtesy of Inco and CKNC-TV.Appropriately, the colorful display couldbe seen for miles, in proper style for areally big birthday celebration.

Through foresight and good sense,concert organizers had planned for alarge turnout at the Sunday evening showand were well prepared to hand'e thelarge crowd. With the aid of CopperCliff Highlanders cadets, all traffic wasparked in good order, aflowing for easydispersal after the concert.

Judging by crowd reaction during andafter the show, it shou'd be termed ahighly successful birthday party for avery worthy country.A spectacular fireworks display lit up the sky and made all the waiting worthwhile.

An estimated crowd of 10000 was on hand to listen to music and view the fireworks.

1,035-Foot Raise SuccessfullyCompleted At Carson Mine

An eight-foot diameter raise bore hole,1035 feet in length, was successfullycompleted at Garson mine by the minesdrilHng department recently. Bored witha 71 R raise borer, the amazing feat tooka little over four months to complete.

Average penetration for the pilot holewas 38 feet per shift, while reamingaveraged about seven feet per shift. It isinteresting to note that only one bit wasrequired to drill the 11-inch pilot holeand that the full length of the hole wasreamed in one pull, with no cutter

changes required.Specifically designed for inco

operations, the reaming head is alsoequipped with four stabiizinq cutters,The innovative design also includes aremovable eight-foot section and stem tofacilitate transportation.

The 1035-foot hole was bored at anincline of 730 and will be utilized as aventilation raise and is the first leg of anew 15000-foot fresh and return airventilation system, scheduled forcompletion in 1978.

It started with a gift from a friend 15years ago and grew into somethingbeautiful. Bob Burke, of Inco'stransportation and traffic department inCopper Cliff, was working at theFrood-Stobie time office when the beerstein collection began.

A miner, the late Hermas Wells wasmoving to another apartment and offeredBob three of his mugs as a gift. Bobaccepted them gratefully and the collec-tion, which now occupies a place ofhonor in Bob's recreation room at hisnew home in Candlewood Park in Lively,was under way.

Over the years, as the collection andinterest grew, friends and relatives addedto the collection with gifts they dis-covered in far-off corners of the world.One of Bob's favorites was picked up ina bar in East Germany. "It was ondisplay, but not for sale," Bob said,

The collection now includes stemsfrom Europe, Africa, Russia, Barbados,Hawaii, Iran, Ecuador and Peru andpoints in between. Numbering over200, the collection is far from complete,Bob claims, as he still needs mugs fromthe Far East, Scotland, Scandinavia,Greenland, Iceland and South America.

Several of the mugs in Bob'scollection lay claim to being the smallestbeer mug in the world, but the smallestin the lot are a matching silver set, nobigger than Bob's little finger. Thelargest in the collection, if filled tocapacity, could send the hardiest beerdrinker into oblivion.

Also occupying a place of honor onone of the collection shelves is a mug

purchased in a Sudbury store for only29 cents.

"My daughter Sheri-Ailison bought itfor me when she was six years old,"Bob said, "She wanted to help me withmy collection."

Another of Bob's favorites is anantique hand-made pewter mug whichcame from Ireland for Bob's collection.He has been offered $400 for the mug,but refuses to sell it as a matter of ethicsand collector's sense.

The collection sits in massive woodencases, given to Bob by his brother Billy.They were scorched by flames, the resultof a fire, and Bob spent many hoursscraping and sanding them into perfectcondition. A couple of hundred dollarsworth of polished glass now lines thecases, indeed a handsome home forthe treasured collection.

Newly Installed Super II Tumblast Unit BoostsProduct Quality In Foundry Additives Plant

In May 1972, the foundry addtivespiant went on stre3m at the Port Cobornenickel refinery to produce nickelmagnesium additives for the foundryindustry. As 'with any new process.difficulties were encountered in theeary stages of production, but throughthe efforts of the operaUng, engineeringand mechanical departments, theprobems were quickly rectified.

Since that time, many innovationshave been added to the plant, which notonly lighten the burden of the workers,but also increase the quality ofproduction. One of the major changeswas the addition of the billet castingmachine in July, 1974, which has thecapability of casting 3 and 15-poundalloy billets on a continuous basis.

The most recent problem to beovercome was the mould wash and themagnesium oxide which forms on theouter surface of the billets. This is beingremoved by the recently installedSuper II Tumblast, built by theWheelabrator Company, This machineloads itself with a predetermined weightof billets and tumbles them. During thistumbling action, an abrasive material isblasted at the billets from a power-drivenwheel, which throws the abrasive bycontrolled centrifugal force, removing allimpurities from the surface. Thissophisticated equipment then separatesthe product from the impurities andunloads the billets. The quality of theabra&ve is controlled by a complexsystem of vibrating screens and aircurrents, removing the contaminants andpoor quality abrasive and recycling theremainder.

Dust control is achieved by varioussizes of pipes that contain and directthe dust to collection bags by thedrawing action of fans, The dust isreleased at timed intervals by pulsatingjets of air and is collected and emptiedinto a container by a rotary valve at thebottom of a large hopper.

Because of the skills required tooperate the unit, properly trainedoperators were required. This gave WmBabirad, who had recently inaugurated

a new training and developmentprogram, the perfect opportunity to testhis methods. His first undertaking forthe project was to gather information andwrite an operating instruction manual.Three men were then designated fromthe foundry additives plant for anntensive training program. On conclud-ing the course, the men were not onlyefficient at operating the machine butcould also spot potential problems and

suggest a method of rectiiyng them.Through the joint effort of the ne'

Training and Development Centre andthe anode department, the Super IITumblast machine has quicky andefficiently become an integral part ofoperations in the foundry additives plantat the Port Colborne nickel refinery andis further helping to enhance theappearance and salability of itsproducts.

In the ten years since its implementa-tion, aircraft patrol of the King'sHighways by the Ontario Provincia'Police has proven to be an effectiveenforcement method in respect tomoving traffic violations.

Corporal Bill Crawford of the SudburyDetachment of the OP.P. claims thatsince the program was started, manydrivers have eased up on the accelerator"If drivers see a plane while driving inthe patrol zone, their immediate reactionis to slow down," Corporal Crawfordsaid, "that way all aircraft in the area areworking for us. Since the oblective isto slow down speeders the aircraft patrolsystem is still working even though theremay riot be an officer in the air forhundreds of miles.

There are presently 1,759 miles ofKing's Highway in Ontario marked foraircraft patrol. Six aircraft arestrategically located in areas having ahigh volume of traffic and accidentexperience. O.P.P. planes are presentlybased in London, Burlington, Downsview,Barrie, Ottawa and Sudbury.

The Sudbury Aircraft Patrol covers alarge area along Highway 17 from Sault

Ste. Marie to 1ust past North Bay. Thepatrol also checks the highways as faras Parry Sound and along Highway 11to MacTier.

Starting in May and running throughthe summer, Provincial Constables JohnRoe, Ray Albert and Marcel Belangershare the responsibilties of the aircraftpatrol. One of the constables,accompanied by a civilian pilot, fliesthe skies above the "T" marked high-ways. Interceptor cars are set up inprearranged positions along the high-way, usually three miles apart.

While the patrol cars position them-selves at either end of the three milezone, the plane is flying parallel to thehighway at an altitude between 1000and 1,500 feet. The airborne officer hasa clear view of the plainly markedhighway with large white "T' 'S paintedon the pavement edge at exactly onequarter mile intervals. The officer cantime any vehicle as it passes the markersand thereby determine the speed.

Timing is carried out with twoprecision stopwatches, triggered to startat exactly the same time with the tapof a handle. Two watches are usedin case a protesting driver shoulddecide to challenge charges in courtby claiming the O.P.P. stopwatch wasinaccurate. "In cases like this we havethe watches examined by a professionalwatchmaker who testifies to their workingorder in court," Corporal Crawford said,since this can be expensive, the driver

found guilty pays for the inspection."Cars travelling at 55 miles per hour

will cross the quarter mile in 16.3seconds. Any car timed in less time,is over the limit, and the exact speedis quickly determined by consulting achart, accurate to fractions of a second.If over the limit, the car is timed anotherquarter mile, and if the results againindicate speeding, the patrol cars arenotified.

The aftcraft patrol system is effectivein controlling violations other thanspeeding as well. Tailgaters, erraticdrivers and stolen vehicles all comeunder the watchful gaze of the ''eye inthe sky," a helpful tool for the OP.P.in their fight to reduce accidents.

Yes, sports fans Senior baseball isalive and doing well after an 18-yeardrought The Nickel Region SeniorBaseball League is in its inauguralseason with a three-team roster thatincludes the Sudbury Shamrocks, theConiston Redsocks and the Copper CliffRed men

Instrumental in forming the new leagueare two well known Incoites, Berk Keany,from Frood mine, and Gerry Wallace,from the accounting department inCopper Cliff, They, along with youngDanny Gallagher, a sports reporter atthe Sudbury Star, sparked the revival ofsenior baseball in Sudbury.

Both Berk and Gerry played in theold Nickel Belt Baseball Associationwhich was composed of six teams and

run by the Athletic Association at eachlocation. The teams in those days werethe Frood Tigers, the Coniston Redsocks,the Copper Cliff Redmen, the SudburyShamrocks, the Creighton Indians andthe Garson Greyhounds. Many fans willtell you that they were treated to someof the best senior baseball in theprovince.

The old association folded in 1958because the cost of operation becameprohibitive. Todays league is a wholenew ballgame, if you 'II pardon the punThe players are all local boys whosolicited their own sponsors to helpdefer the cost of uniforms which costsome $40 each. Each player buys hisown spikes and gloves.

Gerry Wallace helped write theconstitution for the new league andsome of the items it contains are aimedat keeping the league local and makingbaseball a better game. For instance,there is one clause that gives the three

original teams the power to approve anynew entries in the years to come. Thiskeeps the control with the players. Everymember of a team must have been aresident of this area for at least oneyear.

What were trying to do, says Gerry,is to bridge the gap between the minor

league and the professional system.There are all kinds of minor leagues thattake care of players up to the age of 17,but what about interested players pastthis age group?

Our immediate objective is to keepthe league operating and to build up fansupport and public interest, Also wehope to expand in the immediate future,but we first want to get this seasonbehind us.

Revival Of Senior Baseball

and later joined the Sudbury Shamrocksand the Frood Tigers. In 1949 he wonthe most valuable player award and theWiggy Walmsey trophy for the battingchampionship. He has a lifetime battingaverage of .340.

He still is active in baseball and hasumpired many games for the fledglingleague this year. Berk Keany, also activein the old association, has donated histime to coaching and managing theSudbury Shamrocks.

Although the league may be small, itis major league in class and playerdedication. The regular season is almostover, but playoffs will start mid-August.Why not come out and support the boys?They'd appreciate it, and you'll enjoy afine ball game.

By the way, the Redmen play at NickelPark in Copper Cliff, the Redsocks playat Coniston Field, and the Shamrocksplay at Sudbury Stadium.

The 82-foot spritsaU barge "May,'currently on a tour of Canadian andAmerican ports on the Great Lakes,stopped in Port Colborne recently fora one-day visit. Sailing from Buffalo,N.Y., the barge motored into the harbourfrom lack of wind, despite having morethan 3000 square feet of sail,

After clearing customs, dignitariesfrom the Port Colborne Chamber ofCommerce and the city council boardedthe ship, along with representatives fromTate and Lyle Industries, owners of theboat, and Redpath Industries, whichchartered the visit. Captain DavidCopsey greeted the delegation, and aftera brief inspection of the deck, MayorJohn Buscarino welcomed the captain,his crew and the ship to the city. As amemento of the occasion, the Mayorpresented pure nickel medallions to thecaptain, his crew and other dignitaries.

Two years ago, Inco donated to theCity of Port Colborne 10000 suchmedallions, depicting the citys crest onone side, and on the other a bridge, aship and the nickel refinery; all animportant part of life in Port Colborne.More than 4000 of the coins have beengiven to visitors since that time.

The May was originally built in 1891to transport cargo on the Thames, Itwas recently purchased and restored bythe Tate and Lyle group of companies,one of its original owners. The hold wasconverted to a small museum showingthe ships history.

On leaving Port Colborne, the saiNngbarge was bound for Toronto and aoneweek stay at Ontario Place, thenfor Kingston and Montreal for theOlympics, On Completing its tour, theMay will be placed on a large freighter

and returned to its home port of London,England.

Riding a ten-speed bicycle is goodexercise and a lot of fun - so much sothat Dave Homer decided to ride his for5,000 miles!

Dave is the son of Frank Homer,Ontario division supervisor of employeebenefits, who felt it was about time hesaw the country, and what better waythan by bicycle! But to Dave it wasmore than just a way to see Canada, itwas a personal challenge and somethingthat he had planned for over a year.

Last summer, Dave rode from Montrealto St. John's, Newfoundland. "That tripwas a trial run," said Dave. "Also, it wasa good way of testing my endurance."

In early May, Dave flew to Vancouverand then took the ferry to Nanaimo onVancouver Island. He unpacked histrusty bike and started on his journey.Dave estimates that he covers about 100miles a day. "On my best day so far Ihave covered 168 miles, but that was onflat terrain across the prairies," he says.

Dave bought his bicycle in Torontofor $600. The price may seem high, butaccording to Dave, it is not out of line.In fact some custom machines cost threetimes that much!

"The Triangle" talked to Dave whenhe was in Copper Cliff on June 11. He

had been on the road since May 4 andreached St. John's on June 26. Henow plans to travel through the north-eastern United States and observe anumber of bicentennial celebrations.

Dave estimates that it costs him $8 aday for living expenses, not includingthe price of equipment.

Any tips, Dave? If youre paflning anextended trip by bicycle, first check withyour doctor and make sure you arephysically fit. Then buy the best possiblebike you can afford! Oh yes! Make sureyou take along plenty of sun tan lotion

especially for your nose!"

With the arrival of summer also comesthe arrival of gardening chores - suchas cutting the grass, cleaning the yardand planting the garden. Just think ofthe amount of work that is necessary toget Inco spruced up for the summer!

This responsibility is in the capablehands of Tom Peters and the Incoagriculture department. His regular staffis augmented by an additional 40students this summer, and they'reresponsible for all Inco grounds in theSudbury area.

"They do anything and everything,"said Tom, 'from planting trees toharvesting rye. Some of our students arein agricultural programs at school or areinterested in agriculture, But we alsohave students from other disciplines."

The Inco agriculture department hasbeen involved in landscaping and beau-tifying Inco grounds for a long time.But it is really only in the past few yearsthat the most noticeable changes havetaken place.

area. Once nothing but barren rockwaste from the mills, there are now acresof grass. The grass, firmly established,can now be planted with tree seedlingssuch as red pine, jack pine, spruce andother trees and native shrubs.

This year alone more than 9,000seedlings have been planted in the Cand D areas of the tailings section, mostof them by summer students. In yearsto come, this once desolate area couldwell resemble prime park land.

Copper Cliff's Nickel Park is anothergood example of Inco's agriculturalmanagement. This area was once anopen roast bed where copper and nickelores were processed. The baseballdiamond in the park just recentlyreceived a facelift, with two feet of newtopsoil added, plus instant green in theform of fresh sod. Without doubt, thispark is now one of the most picturesquein the Sudbury district.

So whenever you drive past the finelymanicured Inco lawns and gardens, keepin mind that it took a lot of hard workand planning by the green thumbs in theInco agriculture department.

can sometimes be confusing, butkeeping the track right is a straight-forward job that requires knowhow andelbow grease, Inco's track gangs haveplenty of both, according to RoccoCuomo, supervisor of track for Incostransportation department in CopperCliff.

We have the highest standard ofindustrial track maintenance in NorthAmerica, Rocco says, and we'vemade many innovations that keep our railservices in top shape."

Maintaining the 100 miles of Incorailway track that link the many industrialcomplexes involves eight crews and an"extra gang." The extra gang isinvolved mostly with construction andthe installation of new track.

When a flaw is detected in the track,crews are sent out to correct it as soonas possible. If the track is clear, no timeis lost in getting a crew to the work sitewith the necessary equipment.

The railrepair equipment, includingtampers, track liners, bolt tighteners,

Oneinvention, which was developed a coupleof years ago by former car shopsupervisor John Toivenen, was designedfor breaking slag along the rails at theslag dump.

Top golfers from across the country were in Sudbury recently to take part in the 29th AnnualIdylwylde Invitational Tournament for the much coveted Inco Trophy. Taking top spot in thetournament for the second year in a row was Fred Silver, right, former Copper Cliff nativeand a four-time winner of the trophy. Fred's win made him the second man to take the trophytwo years in a row. Fred's father, Ron, is a former Inco employee. Ron Taylor, president ofInco Limited, Ontario Division, and Idylwylde Invitational committee chairman, Brian Knight,presented Fred with the trophy. Although forecasts predicted rain for the weekend of thetournament, golfers were in for excellent weather for the matched play action.

A summer student in Inco's agriculture department in Copper Cliff, Danlelle Brunet admiresnew blossoms and bananas formed on a banana tree in the Copper Cliff greenhouse. Thetree, started from a cutting, is only two years old and produced its fruit slightly ahead ofschedule. Just for the record, banana trees are actually members of the grass family and areclassed as giant tropical herbs. In their native habitat they obtain a height of 25 feet and formleaves nine feet long. Banana trees produce fruit only once in their life and then die. QuippedDanielle: "We've already got a few cuttings started, and should have new trees growingshortly."

That's Billy Van Embden, avictim of muscular distrophy, who was recently given the royal tour at the Lively station of theWalden Fire Department. The Wintario program haspromised $176,000 to aid in constructioncosts for the building, leaving local residentswith the task of raising an additional$88,000. Through door-to-door cam-paigning, fund drives, Winter Carnivals andmonthly dances, the bulk of the requiredamount has been raised, however, an addi-tional $20,000 has to be collected. Alex Gray, Incos agricultural technician inCopper Cliff, was a recent guest on OpenLine a popular program on CKSO Radio inSudbury. Alex and show host, MikeHopkins, left, exchanged information andanswered many questions from listeninggardeners. Alex previously appeared onthe program and, as usual, attracted a largenumber of calls.

Moving an oil storage tank 14 feet high andweighing some 15 tons is no easy under-taking, even for Incos transportation depart-ment. The tank was recently moved from thesmelter complex to the iron ore recoveryplant storage area. A 25-ton float and a 55-ton crane were required for the move, and aline truck was called in to raise wires alongthe route. Welders were required to removegateposts at one of the plant entrances to al-low passage of the 20-foot-wide tank. Themove was supervised by Bob Burke of theCopper Cliff transportation department. VicHenderson and Les Cresswell assisted flthe move, along wth an escort by the Sud-bury Regional Police and a CPA flagman sta-tioned at level crossings

Ken Anthes, a foreman in the shearing de-partment at the Port Colborne nickel refineryand currently assistant to the safety super-visor, Joe Rossi, has been spending Sundaynights as the announcer at HumberstoneSpeedway for the past 13 years. Very popu-ar with the spectators, Ken atways enjoyspassing on a humorous story. His longstanding success is probably attnbuted tostrolls through the pit area of the speedway,gathering bits of information about thedrivers and later relating them to the audi-ence. His good strong voice is also an asset.

A first-aid training program has been set up at the Port Colborne nickel refinery to instructhourly rated employees who have not received previous training. Two qualified instructorsfrom the mechanical department are handling the teaching duties for the two-day courses,which are being held every month during the summer, Beginning in September, a classconsisting of 10 men from different departments of the plant, will be formed every two weeks.At the conclusion of each course, the men have the option of writing the exam for a St. JohnsAmbulance certificate. Enrique Arce Behrens, who is in charge of community relations at Exmibal's plant,Guatemala, was a recent visitor to Inco operations in the Sudbury District. Enrique touredmany of the surface plants, but claims his biggest thrill was an underground tour of the Cop-

r Cliff South mine. ''I was lust amazed,'' quipped Enrique. ''It was a most wonderful ex-perience - like going into the heart of the earth.'' Joe Sullivan - Logo WriterThe foremost harness racing event of

the Sudbury area is the ''Nickel Plate,"slated for August 14 at the SudburyDowns. With that in mind, we thoughtit would be appropriate if this month'slogo writer were involved in horseracing. We hit the jackpot when weasked Joe Sullivan to pen this month'scover.

Joe, a maintenance mechanic at theCopper Cliff nickel refinery, has beenwith Inco for the past 25 years. A proudhorse owner and a driver at SudburyDowns, he currently owns two six-year-old geldings: that's 'ShadydaleGem" on the left and 'Orphan Buster'on the right.

Joe, who operates a 100-acre farm ofprime pasture in Azilda, hopes to getinto raising horses on a larger scalewithin the near future.

'1 owned a saddle horse for a coupleof years before I bought my first racehorse,'' said Joe, pointing out that heacquired his first race horse in 1972, justa month after Sudbury Downs opened itsdoors to Northern Ontario racing fans.

Joe is now fully qualified and licensedto both train and drive horses.

Naturally, he hopes to have one of hishorses entered in the Nickel Plate. So,f you see him go by, give hm a cheer'

Who knows, he might even comein first
