Professor CATHGARTLord Boyd-Orr writes :" Professor Cathcart was almost the last of the small but
brilliant group of the British physiologists of the pre-vitaminperiod when research in physiological chemistry was confinedmainly to energy exchange and protein metabolism. In spiteof recent advances, these subjects are still the fundamentalbasis of nutrition, and in both of them Cathcart was a leadingauthority with an international reputation.
" Besides being a scientist of the first rank, he was a man ofwide culture, deeply interested in philosophy, literature, andart as well as in other branches of science, especially psycho-logy. My most enduring and pleasant memories of his researchlaboratories are the occasions when the tedious chemicalanalytical work was enlivened by discussions on these widerfields of research and speculation. I can still remember someof the views expressed by the Chief and those who came towork in his laboratories, including Dr. Gertrude Bostock, ascientist and philosopher of no mean order. It was fittingthat Cathcart and she, two kindred souls, should get married.
" If I might add a personal note, he was the man who hadthe greatest influence in shaping my life. He introduced meto research, a line I had never contemplated, and while I was
still a very junior person, who had published only two ratherunimportant papers, he insisted on my going, rather reluc-tantly, to start what became the Rowett Research Institutein Aberdeen. Indeed the institute should be regarded as anoffshoot of the physiology department of Glasgow University, and until he resigned I regarded that department as a sort ofspiritual home to which I could return for advice and
encouragement." To me and to many others it is a melancholy thought that
the tall lithe figure with the dark hair and bright blue eyes, and the rather stern face which broke into the most beautifulsmile, and the spontaneous boyish laughter in the talks anddiscussions he loved, now belong to memory.",
