NEW OPERATING-THEATRES AT ST. HELENS
NEW twin theatres at St. Helens Hospital, Lancashire, willshortly be put into use. The building work was completed in14 months at a cost of E140,000.
Antistatic plastic floor tiles have been laid throughout the sterileareas. Ventilation air is drawn from outside the building, is filtered,heated, washed, and re-heated, and is then draughtlessly introducedat positive pressure. The air temperature is under the surgeon’scontrol. The sterilisers are of the " pass-through " type. Instrumentsare put in on the non-sterile side, and withdrawn after sterilisation inthe sterile area. There is a small high-speed steriliser for droppedinstruments.A separate autoclave room serves both theatres and wards. Lighting
throughout is by means of recessed fittings with fluorescent tubes.Immediate stand-by lighting is provided by an emergency battery,and power by a diesel generator.
University of OxfordProf. R. B. Duthie has been appointed Nuffield professor of
orthopaedic surgery, and he will take up his appointment inMarch, 1966.
Professor Duthie graduated M.B. from the University of Edinburghin 1948. After holding house-appointments and serving in theR.A.M.C. in Malaya, he returned to the Royal Infirmary in Edin-burgh, where he took his F.R.c.s.E. in 1953. During the next fouryears he held the Crichton and the David Wilkie surgical researchscholarships of the University of Edinburgh, and the research fellow-ship of the Scottish Hospitals Endowment Research Trust. In 1956he graduated CH.M. and was awarded a gold medal for his thesis. Aftera year’s research in the United States National Cancer Institute,Bethesda, Maryland, and a year at the Institute of Orthopaedics inLondon, he returned in 1958 to the United States as professor oforthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic surgeon-in-chief in the Universityof Rochester. His published work includes papers on the histo-chemistry of osteogenesis, bone pathology, and the healing of vasculargrafts. For his experimental work in 1957 he was awarded thepresident’s prize of the Societe Internationale de Chirurgie.
University of LondonMr. J. B. Hume has been appointed deputy vice-chancellor
for 1965-66.
Sir Herbert Seddon has been appointed to the newlyestablished chair of orthopxdics tenable at the Institute of
Orthopaedics.Sir Herbert, who is 61 years of age, was educated at the William
Hulme’s grammar school, Manchester, and St. Bartholomew’sHospital. He qualified in 1925, and in 1928 took the F.R.c.s. From1925 until 1931, when he became resident surgeon at the countrybranch of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, he held a numberof junior appointments, which included a demonstratorship in
anatomy and an instructorship in surgery at the University ofMichigan. In 1933 he was awarded the Robert Jones medal of theBritish Orthopxdic Association. He was appointed to the Nuffieldchair of orthopxdic surgery at the University of Oxford in 1940.In 1948 he was appointed director of studies of the Institute ofOrthopxdics, University of London, and clinical director of the
Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In 1943 and in 1945 he workedin Malta and in Mauritius where there were outbreaks of polio-myelitis, and after that regularly visited the then Colonial territoriesin Africa on behalf of the Colonial Office. He has been president ofthe British Orthopxdic Association, and a member of the MedicalResearch Council and of the Tropical Medicine Research Board; andhe holds honorary doctorates of the universities of Grenoble andMalta. His publications include papers on poliomyelitis, nerveinjuries, and bone and joint tuberculosis.

Sir John McMichael.
University of Newcastle upon TyneOn May 20 the honorary degree of D.se. will be conferred
on Prof. A. B. Sabin, who will be a Marchon visiting lecturerat the university from May 18 to 28.
National University of IrelandDr. Francis Martin has been appointed a lecturer in path-
ology at University College, Galway. The degree of M.D. hasbeen granted to M. J. T. Fitzgerald and C. J. B. Bourke.
