858 News University of Edinburgh Dr. Gweneth Whitteridge has been appointed to the lecture- ship in the history of medicine, and on Friday, May 5, at 5.15 P.M., in her inaugural lecture she will speak on the university of Padua and its medical school in the 16th century. University of Glasgow Dr. G. C. Arneil has been appointed senior lecturer in child health, and Dr. F. I. Caird senior lecturer in geriatric medicine. University of Wales An honorary degree of D.SC. is to be conferred in July on Prof. Charles Huggins. Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists At a meeting of council on April 1, with Sir John Peel, the president, in the chair, Mr. H. J. Malkin was appointed director of postgraduate studies at the college. Mr. D. B. Fraser was appointed Sims-Black professor for 1968 to visit Canada and the West Indies. K. S. Malcolm was admitted to the membership. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow At a meeting of the college on April 3 with Prof. J. H. F.R.C.S.G.-Parmanand Vijay Poonai. Review Body The Prime Minister has appointed Mr. D. F. Landale a member of the Review Body on the Remuneration of Doctors and Dentists in succession to Sir Archibald Forbes. Mr. Landale, who is 61, was chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland from 1955 to 1965. Imperial Cancer Research Fund Prof. E. F. Scowen has been elected chairman of the council of this Fund in succession to Sir Cecil Wakeley, who has retired. Central Midwives Board Sir Alan Moncrieff has succeeded Sir Arnold Walker as chairman of this Board. Sir Arnold has retired after holding office for 21 years. Health Centres in Scotland In Scotland 4 health centres are already in operation, 2 others (at Cumbernauld and Langholm) will be opened later this year, and the building of another in Livingston will begin shortly. The planning of several other health centres has reached an advanced stage, and in all more than 50 projects are at present under consideration. Peripheral Circulation Group This group has been formed by clinicians, medical scientists, veterinary scientists, biologists, and biomedical engineers interested in the peripheral circulation, the microcirculation, and the relationship between fluid-flow and local tissue function. The group plans to hold informal discussions and demonstra- tions of experimental techniques. Beginners in research will be welcome. Further information may be had from Mr. I. A. Dismissed The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council dismissed an appeal by Dr. Sunil Chandra Battacharya against the direction of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Medical Council to erase his name from the Medical Register. National Health Centre Conference This conference is to be held at Queen Mary College, Mile End Road, London E.1, on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7. Speakers will include Dr. Michael Warren, Dr. M.
