Established as an educational institution in 1972 and conferred as a University in 1989, the University of Limerick is an independent, internationally focussed university with 14,000 students.

As one of Ireland’s five-star

(QS Rated) universities, we are

recognised for our commitment

to graduate employability, our

industry-relevant, award-winning

research, our dedication to the

student experience and extensive

community engagement. Located

5km from Limerick City and

20km from Shannon International

Airport, the University of Limerick

is renowned for possessing one

of the most spectacular and

environmentally sympathetic

modern university campuses

anywhere in the world.

A disciplined and rigorous approach

to learning challenges students

by setting high expectations for

their academic performance and

matches their potential and ability.

Equally, a rigorous approach to

programme design and continual

curriculum development that

is characterised by an ethos

of research-led teaching and

learning is a defining feature of the

institution. Since our foundation,

the needs of the communities

we serve have also been to the

forefront of our activities and have

shaped our research and teaching

programmes. The realisation that

we have a responsibility to promote

economic, educational and social

development unites us with the

community and demands that we

remain closely connected to the

cultural, economic, professional

and business worlds in ways that

distinguish us as an institution of

higher learning.

Employability has always been at

the core of our teaching mission

and continues to be a central tenet

of our distinctive approach to higher

education in Ireland. The inclusion

of Cooperative Education and

work placement as a compulsory

element of all our undergraduate

programmes is one of the specific

strengths of UL; and is for many

students, an incentive to choose

UL over other Irish universities

and colleges. The result of these

sustained efforts means that we

occupy a position of immense

strength with respect to graduate

employability compared to other

institutions in Ireland.

We value, support and encourage

research excellence with

demonstrable academic and

societal impact across all disciplines.

The research portfolio has

expanded steadily in recent years,

and our state-of-the-art research

infrastructure has been enhanced

through sustained investment and

expansion, including funding for

large-scale, UL-led national centres.

The campus is home to the Nexus

Innovation Centre supporting

spin-out activity in the region and is

central to the UL Enterprise Corridor

which hosts numerous indigenous

and multinational R&D companies.

Adjacent to the University is the

National Technology Park (NTP),

Ireland’s first science/technology

park (263 hectares), which is home

to more than 80 organisations

employing more than 3,000 people.

Broadening Horizons (UL Strategic

Plan 2015-19) reaffirms our vision

to be “internationally recognised

as a distinctively progressive,

research-led university that

provides an engaging student

experience, conducts world-

class research renowned for

its translational impact and is

globally and locally connected

in terms of its contribution to

economic, social and cultural

life”. This highly ambitious and

challenging plan aims to build on

our considerable achievements to

date in the institution’s relatively

short history; accentuate our

distinctiveness in ways that continue

to set the institution apart from

its competitors; and raise our

international profile, standing and

reputation across all areas of the

University into the future.

Many of the features that support positive student engagement are already in

place at UL: teachers who excite students about their learning and who care

about their students as individuals; work placement (i.e. Cooperative Education,

practice placement and careers programmes and our extensive networks

with business and industry); study abroad, the final year research project; and

abundant opportunities to become actively involved in extra-curricular activities.

Through Engaged Learning: University of Limerick Teaching, Learning and

Assessment Strategy 2014–18, we have adopted a broad framework to capture

the most pertinent characteristics of an engaged approach to teaching, learning

and assessment. The framework, which has been tested against international

evidence, captures the key pillars of UL’s approach – namely academic rigour,

enriched educational experiences, a supportive campus environment, active and

collaborative learning and meaningful student/staff interaction.

Limerick & the Mid-West Region

38

Limerick is the third most populous city in Ireland, and is located in Ireland’s Mid-West region. It is situated at a strategic position on the majestic River Shannon with four main crossing points near the city centre.

The earliest settlement in the city dates back to the

pre-Viking and Viking eras. History also records an

important battle involving Cormac mac Airt in 221 and

a visit by St. Patrick in 434. Records show that, in 812

the Vikings sailed up the Shannon and pillaged the city.

The Normans redesigned the city in the 12th century and

added much of the most notable architecture, such as

King John’s Castle and St Mary’s Cathedral.

In early medieval times Limerick was at the centre of the

Kingdom of Thomond which corresponds to the present

day Mid-West Region. One of the kingdom’s most

notable kings was Brian Boru, ancestor of the O’Brien

Clan of Dalcassians. The word Thomond is synonymous

with the region and is retained in place names such as

Thomondgate, Thomond Bridge and Thomond Park,

home ground of Munster rugby.

In addition to being the region’s capital, Limerick City

is also a main tourist destination along the Wild Atlantic

Way tourist trail that extends the entire Atlantic seaboard

along the west coast of Ireland. Limerick also benefits

from having an excellent road and rail infrastructure,

linking it to other major centres as well as Shannon

airport (40 minutes), Cork airport (70 minutes) and

Dublin airport (2 hours).

Limerick’s location in the Mid-West Region means that it has an exceptional recreational and cultural hinterland with its close proximity to the sea, its inland lakes and waterways, fertile farmland, hills and mountains.

In close proximity to the city are

heritage towns such as Adare and

Killaloe; and nearby attractions

include Bunratty Castle, the Cliffs of

Moher and the unique Burren, one

of the world’s finest examples of

glacio-karst landscapes composed

of limestone pavements over an

area of 250 sq. km. Its micro-climate

is home to a diverse array of plants

and wild flowers where arctic/

alpine plants grow side by side with

Mediterranean species.

This allows for the pursuit of a vast range of recreational activities including

cycling, yachting, kayaking, fishing, shooting, hunting and hill walking to

name but a few. It has a number of blue-flag sandy beaches within close

proximity; and the country’s third largest lake (130 sq.km.), Lough Derg, only

a short distance from the city, is one of the region’s recreational gems. The

University’s own Sports Adventure Centre at Lough Derg provides an array of

sporting activities with state of the art equipment and professional staff.

Attractions of architectural and historical note in the city centre include

Limerick City Museum, King John’s Castle (1212), St Mary’s Cathedral

(1168), the Hunt Museum, Georgian houses and gardens; and the Treaty

Stone, on which was the Treaty Of Limerick was reputedly signed in 1691

(and later dishonoured) at the conclusion of a battle that defined the

course of history of 17th Century Europe.

In 2011 Limerick was named as the European City of Sport. Sporting

Limerick is well-known for its interest and involvement a wide range

of sports; with rugby, Gaelic football, hurling soccer, golf, horse racing,

basketball and tennis being the most popular sporting pastimes in the

City. Limerick is also the headquarters of Munster Rugby and Thomond

Park, its home stadium, is a key feature on the city’s landscape. For the

amateur golfer, there are numerous golf courses located close to the

City including three Championship courses. There will be an opportunity

to get excellent practice and tuition in the soon to be developed PGA

accredited Golf Academy on Campus.

The city is now re-emerging after the recession as a successful

investment location for businesses from within and outside of

Ireland. Its recent economic success, particularly in terms of

attracting large scale multinational investment means that there

are now more than 14,500 people working in 116 overseas

companies in the Mid-West region. This increased international

presence in the region is due in no small part to the availability of

cutting-edge research, the development of new products and the

availability of highly skilled graduates of the University of Limerick.

This continuous investment has already transformed the city

centre. To further capitalise on this progress, Limerick is investing

over €1billion in enterprise and investment infrastructure and

targeting the delivery of a further 12,000 jobs as part of the

“Limerick 2030 Vision: An Economic and Spatial Plan for Limerick”.
