SUPPORT

STUDENTS’ UNION

All students automatically become members of the Students’ Union (SU) when they enrol at West London College. The SU works closely with the Leadership Team and helps make the important decisions that face the College every day. They also organise events and leisure activities such as employability fairs, guest speakers and talent shows. Members of the SU can apply for an NUS card which qualifies them for discounts at various shops, restaurants and cinemas.

The SU Executive Committee is made up of elected student representatives. We have a committee per College, working together to ensure that your voice is heard. Students can apply for positions such as President, Student Governor and Equality & Diversity Officer in elections that take place in September each year.

Student Services is where you can receive information and advice, while getting more closely involved in college life.

The services we offer include:

• Information, advice and guidance

• Careers advice and employability skills

• Student support funds

• Students’ Union

• Support for young people in care

All students, staff and visitors need an ID badge to access College buildings, and security teams are on hand at all times. We also have a team of trained safeguarding officers based at each College for you to discuss any queries or concerns about safeguarding with.

As parents and guardians you will want to ensure that your child makes the right decision for their future. You will also want to know that as an education provider, we not only take an interest in our students’ success rates but also their general wellbeing while they are at the College. We believe in working with you to help our students to succeed.

We do this by communicating regularly with you, providing progress reports on performance, coursework deadlines, exams and attendance. You will also be invited to parents’ evenings, giving you the opportunity to meet our tutors and discuss and achievements or concerns.

The project included growing and selling garden produce in a state-of-the-art polytunnel greenhouse on site, and caring for animals including a rabbit called Rex!

Susana Cortez, Inclusive Learning teacher, said, “We have found that having Rex in the class this year has added extra motivation to many students. I can see an increase in interactions, positive mood and empathy development.”

CARE TO LEARN

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

All students at West London College are encouraged to speak to us about possible financial assistance available while they are studying at the College. If eligible, these funds can go towards travel, equipment costs, books or childcare costs. We can advise you on the criteria before you apply and what paperwork you will need so that you are well prepared to make an application. We also offer Hardship and Student Opportunity Funds to eligible students.

Care to Learn can assist young parents aged under 20 with the costs of registered childcare, and travelling expenses to and from your childcare provider. If you are a young parent starting a new course in September, you could apply for up to £175 per week towards the cost of Ofsted registered childcare.

There are no restrictions on the number of hours per week you study or on the length of the course you take. Payments can cover the periods you are studying in College and may also be paid during the holidays to retain your place if your course continues the following year. The money is paid directly to the registered childcare provider.
