Page 1: Applications - BeaverProcessEquipment · Joint Lock Rings allow for full-penetration welded joints on pipe lined with rubber, polyurethane, and cement mortar. How It Works Lining

Tailings• Rubber & polyurethane linings with welded joints ideal for tailings• Far more cost effective than bare pipe or flanged pipe with linings• Flanged joints leak and are more expensive than welded joints

Concentrate In contrast to loose HDPE liners:

• Rubber & polyurethane linings will not collapse under vacuum• Joint Lock Rings allow for standard, faster pipeline construction• Rubber & polyurethane linings have superior abrasion resistance

Oil-Sands & Produced Water• Oil sands slurry requires extra-thick abrasion-resistant linings• Aluminous cement linings ideal for hi-temp produced water• Welded joints reduce assembly & maintenance labor

Solution Mining • Aluminous cement prevents corrosion & erosion from brine• Joint Lock Rings eliminate risk of corrosion at weld zone• Full penetration welds can be NDE tested for high pressure

Seawater • Using seawater for processes often requires long-distance pipelines• Aluminous cement mortar linings are ideal for long-term protection• Joint Lock Rings are the simplest, safest joint connection method

Joint Lock Rings Allow for Standard Pipeline Construction Methods

Welded Joint Systems for Lined Pipe

Welded joints have always been the preferred method of pipeline construction.

However, bolted mechanical joints have traditionally been required when the pipe has an interior lining, as the heat from welding would burn up the lining.

Joint Lock Rings allow for full-penetration welded joints on pipe lined with rubber, polyurethane, and cement mortar.

How It Works Lining Materials

Ring Manufacturing Ring Insertion Field Welding

Replaces Mechanical Joints Joints for Rubber or Polyurethane Lined Pipe

Joints for Cement Mortar Lined Pipe

• Weld root pass cannot fully penetrate pipe wall, as it would contaminate weld

• Partial penetration welds are commonly used, but not suitable for high pressure

• Gaskets often leak, with liquid corroding the pipe

Benefits of Rubber & Polyurethane Linings

Benefits of Cement Mortar Linings

Allows for Standard Pipeline Construction

• Creates a steel to steel welding surface, eliminating chance of weld contamination

• Full penetration weld is suitable for high pressures and can be NDE tested

• O-ring seal keeps liquid from reaching the weld zone

Natural & Synthetic Rubber• Natural rubber has excellent abrasion & erosion resistance • Natural rubber has superior resilience & elongation • Excellent adhesion to steel – withstands vacuum condition • Butyl rubber can withstand immersion temps up to 120° C

Cast Polyurethane• Excellent abrasion & erosion resistance• Superior tensile & tear strength• Resistant to many hydrocarbons • Hardness & resilience adjusted to withstand specific slurries

Aluminous Hydraulic Cement • Ideal for highly corrosive solution mining brine & seawater • High density & compression strength• Thermally expands & contracts at same rate as carbon steel• Withstands service temperatures of more than 300° C

Portland Cement Blends• Cost efficient method to prevent oxygen from reaching steel• Widely used for protection of potable water pipelines• Increases pipe rigidity• Variety of blends available to meet customer requirements

Full Penetration Welded Joints• Required for high pressure lines • Standard API weld procedures• NDE testing guarantees joint quality

Field Pipe Bends • Standard beveled ends fit through

pipe bender• Elasticity of rubber & polyurethane

easily withstands stretch from long radius bends

Easy Field Length Adjustments• Rings are field-installed at cut-to-fit pipe

ends and ready to weld within hours• Length adjustments with mechanical

joints can add weeks to a project schedule

Joints for Cement Mortar Lined PipeProblem I

• Alternatively, full penetration welds are used with lining hold-backs at weld zones

• Workers must travel far inside pipe to reach exposed weld zones, and trowel-apply patches

• Trowel-applied patches have less density, less quality control, and are common failure points
