ASEAN Youth Exchange Program 2014“Youth LEAD: Lingering the Enhancement of ASEAN Diversity”

Background and Program InformationIn the 21st Century conception, the ideal nation state and its borderline has been significantly decreased – focusing rather on whatever required of mankind in order to co-exist, more or less, in peace amidst the society. The acceleration to establish ASEAN Community by the year 2015 has shown much of enthusiasm of the regional commitments in strengthening cooperations across these great nations of ours as we move towards a more integrated community under the pressure of a ticking clock. However, ASEAN has been facing with certain disparities among member countries in terms of political instability, economic recession, poverty gaps, to the rapid shift of cultural norms. ASEAN is therefore in dire need of a firm regional architecture that is ASEAN-centered to intensify efforts towards community-building, broaden and deepen ASEAN’s external relations and strengthen its role as the primary driving force in the existing regional mechanisms. The potential of next generation is seen essential as a future direction in shaping ASEAN regional architecture on a basis of acquiring empirical and practical knowledge to eventually narrow the development gap in ASEAN countries.

YOUTH LEAD thus, has been established as an exchange program, funded by Thai Government under the Innovative Thai-ASEAN Academic Cooperation at Chulalongkorn University (ITACC@CU), in order to reassure of the ultimate commitments towards the integration. As the future generation, the role of youth across the region remains as crucial as ever in contributing to the society, that it goes with no denial nor question of the urge to determine the future of these nations is indeed – in their hands. The works youth has contributed in developing ties and understanding of ASEAN are being observed with amazement of how fast change can come. For the very first time ever, the theme “Lingering the Enhancement of ASEAN Diversity” is selected. Throughout the 11-day program to be held in Thailand, youth participants gathered from 10 ASEAN countries which feature Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam respectively. They will have an opportunity to take part in group discussions and various kinds of practical activities including community services in order to create a sense of cultural and social awareness, along with the development of leadership and problem-solving skills. Moreover, the youth will be provided with exclusive lectures on ASEAN Integration, bilateral and regional, to international co-operations across the region and related regional issues, as well as a special workshop provided by the National University of Singapore to help them portraying their ideas and initiatives.

The ASEAN community is also known as one of the most diverse regions in the world in terms of political, economic and socio-cultural values. When it comes to the variety of races, languages, religious beliefs and the daily lifestyles of the local communities, they have been misinterpreted via various channels of media and sometimes, perceived with misunderstanding concepts of the so-called alien cultures – making it even more of a challenge for people to merge as one. This project aims to enhance the regional diversity which shall be cherished by its people throughout ASEAN, in order to accept the differences across the region – leading to people-to-people connectivity in ASEAN through

strengthening and developing youth networks on the basis of trust, shared values and mutual understanding at first-hand experience level.
