DEscriPtion of thE DEgrEE ProgrammEThe Degree Programme inTourism aims at professionalexpertisewhenworkinginamulticulturaltourismnetworkandenvironment.GraduatesoftheDegreeProgrammeinTourismspecialiseinworkingintourismdestinations.Aspecialfeatureofthisprogrammeisthateventhoughstudentsstudytourismwithanemphasisonnorthernnature-basedaspects,theycanapplythisknowledgeandskillwhenworkinginthetourismindustryanywhereintheworld.Alltheknowledgegainedduringthestudiesenablesgraduatestobecomepotentialfutureentrepreneursinthetourismindustry.
TheDegreeProgrammeinTourismfocusesonintegratingstudiesinmanagement,leadershipandentrepreneurshipinaccordancewith the principles of sustainable tourism. Contemporarymarketing,includinge-commerceandproductdevelopment,andvariouslanguageandculturalstudieshavealsoanimportantroleinthedegreeprogramme.Duringinternationalstudyexchange,studentscanbroadentheirspecialisationareasthroughthevariousprogrammesofourmanypartnerinstitutionsabroad.Thismeansspecialisation,e.g.insomespecifictourism-relatedareaslikeEventManagement.Studentsarealsoencouragedtocompletetheirpracticaltrainingabroad,sinceitwillgivemoreperspectivetotheirownexpertiseandoffersanalternativewaytogainmoreknowledgeinthefieldoftourism.TheamountofstudiesoftheFinnishlanguageandcultureprovidedtotheinternationalstudentsenablesthemtoberecruitedintheFinnishjobmarket.

DEscriPtion of thE DEgrEE ProgrammETheDegreeProgramme in InnovativeBusinessServices (IBS)educatesspecialistsandexpertsforavarietyofjobsinnorthernbusinessenvironment.Theprogramme isexclusivelydesignedforthose,whowishtodeveloptheirskillsincreatingbusinessopportunitiesinnorthernpartsofScandinavia,BarentsandothergeographicalareasoftheArcticRegion.Theprogrammeisalsoanexcellentchoiceforthose,whoarewillingtocombinethebestpracticesandknow-howofdifferentindustries,whenplanningtostartupone´sownbusinessinthenearfuture.
TheIBSprogrammeisplannedandimplementedincloseco-operationwithcompanies,authoritiesanduniversitiesoperatingintheregion.Itisanopportunityforthose,whoareinterestedinadaptinginnovativeapproachesinspecificfieldsofbusinesses.Thestudentsareofferedpossibilitiestocreatementor-typerelationshipswithappropriateorganizationsandentrepreneursinthearea.

• Confirm your study place by returning the confirmation form by 2 August 2011 at 4.15 pm Finnish time at the latest to the higher education institution you chose as your final study place. If you do not return the form in time, you will lose your study place.• If you have applied with an upper secondary education completed in Finland, please attach a copy of your educational certificate(s) to the confirmation form and return them by 2 August 2011 at 4.15 pm at the latest.• Please remember that your admission is conditional until your original relevant certificates are checked. The UAS may withdraw the admission, if the applicant has given false information or has given a falsified document.
• Apply online on 3 January - 15 February 2011. Online application closes at 4.15 pm Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT). Paper application forms must arrive by 15 February at 4.15 pm Finnish time at the latest to the UAS of the applicant's first choice• Send the required copies of non-Finnish educational certificates and language certificates by 25 February at 4.15 pm Finnish time at the latest to the admission office of your first option.• Entrance examination invitations and decisions on eligibility are posted by mail from week 12 onwards.• Entrance examinations are arranged between 4 April and 6 May 2011. The invitations will include all the details about time, location, and special arrangements. Please note, that some UAS do not arange examinations anywhere else than in Finland.• If you are applying with an upper secondary education completed in Finland, please inform of the changes in your grade point average by 20 May 2011 at 4.15 pm at the latest.• Results are announced on 30 May 2011 at the earliest. Please remember that posting the results takes a few days.• All higher education admission results are announced by 19 July 2011 at the latest.

AnapplicantwhoisnotacitizenofanEU/EEAcountrymustprovideproofofhis/herEnglishlanguageskillsby25February2011at4.15pmatthelatesttotheadmissionsofficeofhis/herfirstpreferenceUAS.Inordertoprovetheapplicant’sEnglishlanguageskills,he/shemustprovideoneofthefollowingminimumrequirements:
IELTS score academic level 6,0 or TOEFL score 550 paper-based test/ 79-80 internet -based test or skills level 4 in English in the National Certificate of Language Proficiency
(www.oph.fi => Tutkinnot ja opiskelu => Yleiset kielitutkinnot).
BothTOEFLandIELTStestresultsarevalidfortwoyears.TheNationalCertificateofLanguageProficiencydoesnothaveasetdateofvalidity.TOEFLscoreresultsareonlyaccepteddirectlyfromtheEducationalTestingService.

Bachelor‘sdegreeprogrammeconsistsof fivemodules:basicstudies,vocationalstudies,practicaltraining,free-choiceelectivestudiesandathesisproject.ThescopeoftheBachelor’sdegreeisusually210studycredits,eventhoughdegreesof240and270exist,too.Inadegreeof210creditsbasicstudiesareusuallythescopeof60,vocationalstudies90,practicaltraining30,free-choiceelectivestudies15andthethesisproject15credits.Duringonestudyyearthestudentisexpectedtostudy1600hourswhichmakesupto60credits.ThestudycreditsusedareequivalenttothoseoftheEuropeancreditsystemECTS(EuropeanCreditTransferSystem).
fEEs anD costsHighereducationinFinlandisfreeofcharge.TheUAS'studentsneedtopaythestudentorganisation's(SAMOK)annualmembershipfeetogetastudentcard.Thestudentcardallowsstudentscertainbenefitsanddiscounts(intravellingetc.).
Anon-EUstudentmustprovethathe/sheisabletosupporthisorherlivinginFinlandduringthestudies.Therequiredsumofmoneyis500eurospermonthor6,000eurosperyear.Moreinformationonvisasandresidencepermitsisgiveninthefollowingsubchapter.
Visa anD rEsiDEncE PErmitsStudentscomingfromtheEUcountriesdonotneedavisawhenstudyinginFinland.StudentscomingfromotherthanEUcountriesneedavisawhentheystaylessthanthreemonthsinFinland(takinganentranceexamination,forexample).
PriortothetriptotaketheentranceexaminationinFinland,theapplicantmustcheckifhe/sheneedsavisa.FormoreinformationonthevisarequirementscontactthenearestFinnishorotherEU-memberstateEmbassyrepresentingFinlandinvisamatterswellinadvance.Pleasenotethatprocessingofavisaapplicationmayrequireacoupleofweeks.
EUcitizensandthecitizensofIceland,Liechtenstein,NorwayandSwitzerland(seeFinnishImmigrationServiceathttp://www.migri.fi)donotneedaresidencepermitwhenstudyinginFinland.Forastaylonger than threemonthsperiod, students fromEUcountriesneedtoregistertheirrighttoresideinFinlandatthelocalpolicedepartment.ThecriteriaforrighttoresideinFinlandareasfollows:themainpurposeforresidenceinFinlandisthefull-timestudyinginaFinnishhighereducationinstitution,thestudentisabletosupporthisorherlivinginFinland,thestudenthasavalidhealthinsurance.StudentscomingfromSweden,Norway,DenmarkorIcelanddonotneedtohaveaclarificationontheirfinancing.
Non-EUcitizensneedaresidencepermitwhentheyhavebeenadmittedtoahighereducationinstitutionandtheirstudies lastlonger than threemonths.Theresidencepermit is granted foroneyearatthetime.Ifthestudiestakelongerthanoneyear,theextensionoftheresidencepermitneedstobeappliedeveryyearuntilthestudenthasfinishedthestudyprogramme.Forreadmissionof the residence permit the studentmustmeet the followingcriteria:thestudentmustbeafull-timestudent,thestudentmustberegistered inahighereducation institution, thestudenthascompletedthecoursesrequiredinthehighereducationinstitutionstudyprogramme.Inadditiontotheresidencepermit,astudentfromanon-EUcountrymusthaveavalidhealthinsuranceissuedbyreliablecompanyorinstitution.Non-EUstudentswhoarestudyinginFinlandinafull-timedegreeprogrammeforminimumoftwoyearsneedahealthinsurancethatcoversmedicinecosts.Anon-EUstudentmustprovebeingabletosupporthisorherlivinginFinland.

The Ministry of Education and the National Board of Education are responsible for implementing education policy and for administering the education system at the central governmental level. The Finnish higher education system comprises 20 universities and 25 universities of applied sciences. Universities of applied sciences are professionally oriented and train professionals in response to labour market needs and conduct R&D which supports instruction and promotes regional development in particular.
