Japanese Exchange Visit to Takarazuka CityOn 21 September, 15 Applecross students departed Perth International Airport to spend two weeks in Takarazuka, Japan, accompanied by Mr Coppard and me (Ms Nishikawa). Takarazuka City is Melville’s Sister City in Japan and this exchange program has been running for 28 years. The students were very excited as, for all of them, this was their fi rst visit to Japan.

In the fi rst four days of the two week stay, the students went on a tour of the Kansai region, visiting the vibrant city of Osaka, and the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara. They visited Osaka Castle, the Golden Temple and lots of other tourist spots where they learned about Japanese history, tradition, and culture. They also visited the city of Himeji which is famous for the beautiful Himeji Castle.

Mr Kanbara organised a cooking class, a bonsai class, hiking, and various other cultural activities for the students. The students each experienced a homestay with a Japanese family for ten days.

They also experienced junior high school life in Japan and could see the similarities and differences to our own school. A visit to a primary school was tremendous fun. The young children demonstrated Taiko drumming and a Japanese dance. Later we played games with the children and ate “kyushoku” which is a nutritious school lunch. After lunch we participated in the normal Japanese routine of cleaning the school: a new experience for our students.

From the fi rst day of arrival, all of the students admired everything they saw. They kept saying “Wow!”, “Oh God!”,

“amazing!” and as their confi dence grew “Sugoi!” “Kawaii!” and “Omoshiroi!” Students found many differences between Japan and Australia.

All students were so excited to see the host brother or sister whom they had hosted in July. They built strong relationships with their host brothers and sisters and family and I am sure that this trip will not be their last visit to Japan.

Every student gained confi dence and maturity from this exchange program. I could see a different side of the students than the one I see at school. I was proud of their excellent behaviour and delightful manners.

From the Principal's DeskIt is my pleasure to welcome back to Applecross SHS, Mr Andrew Lewis, who has been on extended leave. We also have some changes to the school leadership with Ms Jodi Lambert taking on the role as Deputy Principal for Years 8, 9 & 10 and Mr Phil Samanek as HOLA of Health and Physical Education for Term 4. Mr Andrew Storer will be joining the Health & Physical Education team.

Congratulations to Mr Tony Herbert (Science Learning Area) who has been selected as a fi nalist for the WA Premier’s Secondary Teacher of the Year and Mark Cornish (Science Learning Area) a fi nalist for Beginning Teacher of the Year in the WA Education Awards 2013. Tony and Mark are one of four fi nalists in their respective categories. We wish Mr Herbert and Mr Cornish the best of luck! Well done to the Applecross SHS students who came second overall in WA in the Science Engineering Australia Challenge under the guidance of Aniela Wooldridge and Mark Cornish.

There is some good news regarding our performance in the recent Year 9 NAPLAN testing. Applecross SHS students performed in the Higher Achievement/Higher Progress quadrant for all of the domains of the NAPLAN testing this year. All Year 8 and 9 teachers and students should be congratulated for their efforts and exceptional performance.

I hope all Year 10 parents and students will take the time to refl ect on their academic progress in light of their Mid Year Exam results. Parents should make contact with Jodi Lambert, Rex Lilleyman, Angela Koios or Emma Walker to discuss changes to their academic program for 2014.

The Year 12 students returned from their break for a short period to receive feedback on their mock exams and to also enjoy the traditional dress-up day and formal fi nal assembly. Year 12 WACE examinations commenced on Friday 1st November and offi cially conclude on Thursday 28th November. The Graduation

Ceremony will be held on Monday 9th December at Winthrop Hall, UWA. We wish all of the Year 12 students every success in their examinations and future endeavours and we would also like to thank the parents of the Year 12 students for your support of Applecross SHS over the last few years.

Year 11 students have also completed their exams and will commence the start of Year 12 courses in week 4 of this term. If any students require assistance with their courses they are advised to see Ms Koios (Program Manager) or Mr Van Der Linden (Year 11 Coordinator). It is never too late to make positive changes.

Congratulations to Sophie Wakefi eld who was in the Special Art Program and graduated in 2010. Sophie has secured a place at Oxford University, England. She is studying the History of Art.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to update their email contact details with the school. As you are aware we will be changing the way we conduct our operations. A large portion of the information that was previously mailed to parents by traditional post will now be emailed. To avoid missing out on valuable correspondence from the school please update your contact details by emailing [email protected]

Towards the end of this term we will be moving into the new buildings in preparation for the start of next year. Our application for students not to attend school from Monday the 16th of December through to Thursday 19th of December has been approved. This means Friday the 13th of December will be the last day for students. Please see article on page 6 for more information. These measures will help us facilitate the move to our new facilities for the 2014 academic year. We thank you for your support in this matter.

‘Listen’ to ENavLudwig van Beethoven famously said that music is ‘a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.’ One of the main reasons we study English is to gain a greater insight into ‘the big picture’ – to learn more about the self, the world and what really matters in life (among other things!). There is no doubt, however, that the written word only gains strength when spoken aloud with passion. When utilised thoughtfully, language can be an incredible vehicle to drive change.

Emmanuel Navarro in Year 8 is keenly aware of this fact and has recently been recognised for his outstanding creative talents. Writing and releasing hip hop under the name ENav, Emmanuel is already making giant strides in what promises to be an exciting musical career. After performing in the WA Poetry Slam Finals as part of the WA Poetry Festival last

month, ENav was recently awarded the West Australian Music Industry ‘Song of the Year 2013’ Award in the Under 14s/Schools Category for ‘Listen,’ a powerful original composition.

ENav received a $500 voucher to spend on recording equipment and a full day of recording time in a professional studio in Perth. He has since been offered a number of performance opportunities scheduled for later in the year that will only help to expose his sounds to a wider audience. I am sure he will continue to enjoy tremendous support from his peers at Applecross. Having the opportunity to support a young person like Emmanuel who is pursuing his interests in such a creative way is a wonderful gift. Congratulations on your well deserved success, ENav !

Applecross students speak up for their generationEarlier this year, Newspapers in Education ran a competition in conjunction with The West Australian offering young people a chance to have their voices heard on issues relevant to their generation. Students could opt to write an opinionative piece, a letter to the editor or submit a cartoon exploring an issue relevant to ‘Gen Z,’ the term being used to describe people who were born after the millennial generation. In addition to the handsome sum of $100 being offered to every successful student, the main prize

up for grabs was even more exciting – the chance to spend a day at The West Australian as an honorary member of staff, contributing to and advising on the front page and editorial content of the newspaper.

The judges have since made their decision and I am extremely proud to share that two of the twelve students chosen to form the editorial team were selected from Applecross Senior High School. Lucas Fraser (Year 8) and Katy Zeng (Year 9) will join ten other members of Gen Z from

around the state to bring the newspaper

to life on Monday, October 28. Be sure

to pick up a copy of The West Australian

that day – the library will receive 35 copies

on the day courtesy of Newspapers in

Education so whole classes will be able

to share their experience. Congratulations

to both Lucas and Katy who invested a

considerable amount of their own time

outside of class to develop their entries.

around the state to bring the newspaper

to life on Monday, October 28. Be sure

to pick up a copy of The West Australian

that day – the library will receive 35 copies

on the day courtesy of Newspapers in

Education so whole classes will be able

to share their experience. Congratulations

to both Lucas and Katy who invested a

considerable amount of their own time

outside of class to develop their entries.

Term 4As always, time passes quickly in a busy school. In the next few weeks, the Year 12s will leave us and our Year 11s will be involved in an “Early Start” to their Year 12 studies. This initiative has been used at other schools and we hope it will assist students in their Year 12 performance. The experience elsewhere is that students who need to make course changes are able to get this accomplished in Year 11 so that there are fewer disruptions in Year 12. Students will also be able to get one of their assessment items completed and “out of the way” so this should reduce the pressure in Term 1 next year.

There are a number of social activities planned for students this term:

A Dinner Dance for Year 11s and 12s and river cruises for Year 8s, 9s and 10s. Students are encouraged to participate in these activities—sometimes the memories of social activities at school are the ones that survive longer, and are more fondly remembered, than all the hours of academic lessons!

Our timetable for 2014 is virtually complete. In spite of recent cuts to school funding, we will be running all our usual classes. Some changes include:

an increase in enrolments in the Flexible Learning Program which allows senior students to complete courses at school, for three days per week, while also attending TAFE and a work placement for one day each. Our special Literature program which commenced in Year 8 this year, is expanding into Year 9 and 10 in 2014. A number of Certifi cate courses, for senior students, have been introduced in the past two years and there will be another one commencing in 2014 in the Art department.

The building of the new South Wing and Art block is progressing well. Some of us have been lucky enough to have a guided tour through the site and were all impressed by the standard and scope of the work. While our current school buildings have served us well, the new facilities will be wonderful. In the South Wing, the new Resource Centre (Library), Science laboratories, Home Economics rooms, Fitness Centre and Canteen will be well appreciated by students and it is anticipated that the new Administration building will provide the appropriate professional standard for a school operating in the 21st century. Progress in the Art block is also promising and the space in this area, including good access to the exterior, will be a welcome change from the relatively cramped

accommodation in the current Art rooms.

You may have noticed the installation of transportable classrooms on the school oval, during the recent holiday break. Some of these rooms have been relocated from the north east of the school and others will be arriving during the coming months. Thirteen rooms on the oval will be required throughout 2014 and part of 2015 to accommodate classes while refurbishment takes place in the “old school”. It is anticipated that the major part of the refurbishment work will be complete when we welcome our fi rst Year 7s in 2015 and certainly the rooms that have been allocated to Year 7s should be ready before the end of 2014.

Workplace LearningWorkplace Learning is a course that senior students can study in addition to their six courses. For relatively little effort, students have the chance to participate in work placements that may help them in making decisions about future career directions. Parents of students enrolling in Year 11 and 12 next year are encouraged to call our Workplace Learning Coordinator, Julie Reed (9314 9358) for further information.
