Dear Hr.' Shiimiyeh: Following your request and in accordanc: wi th the guidelines set forth in the MDNR l etter of August 27. 1S86, EDT hes monitored the excavation of oil immediately Qdjac2nt to and e:st of your Grand Rapids warehouse on 312 E11swarth Aveue. The monitoring included the use of an HNU photoionization detctor calibrated for trichloroethylene-
The extent of excavation in the two areas is shown on F i gures l and 2. One area 1s 1mmedictly adjac:t to the warehouse (20 feet wide x 100 feet long}, an the other is located betwe points 8-14 and B-16 near the C&O Railroad ( f wid x 30 fe9t lens). Th depths of these ecavations are shown on Tabls 1 ar.d 2, and in the d2th profile of Figure 3.
As nn be see in Figure 3, most excavntions were taken down 5 to 6 feet to tht top of te clay laye; whE2 the HNU readings wre typically at 2 ppm or less.
lhe soi I in to OC?th cncocntered un 1 for:n and
the vicinity of 3-5 (Figure 2, po i nts l, 2, and 3) was excavated of 12 15 fet t which leve1 a dene gray layer of c1ay w5 whic is at 1es 3 fet thick. This clay layer appeared to be continuous as visulized along the walls of the deep excavation.
Soi samples we:2 take· in viils at 13 feet depth (S-2) and 15 feet depth
(S-:). They wee ana1yz2d fo1iowing EOI's standard quality assurnce procedure.
The ana1ys1s was performed usir.o E?A Method 601 and gas chromatography with thP. following results: 30 ppm for sample S-l and 82 ppm for sample S-2.

The de!est part of the excavation was filled with a load of cl ea n clay · followsct by clean sand fi11 abo·v·e that clay layer. All other areas wer2 f11ed with cl ean sand.
