This typescript was prepared as a typed form of a manuscript held privately,
currently in Samarqand, but during most of the Soviet era and before in Dahbid. I was
able to photograph it during a trip to Dahbid and Samarqand in July 2001; it was not until
after I returned to the United Stated in 2002 that I realized its importance. I was able to
type at least the first two pages of each treatise before returning to Tashkent in February
2003; at that time I compared everything that had been typed at that point to ms. 501, the
oldest of the dated codices of Makhdūm-i Aʿẓam in Sharqshunoslik instituti, and found
the correspondence to be extremely close; sometimes there would be folios with no
differences whatsoever.
Because I was working from photographs and not the paper copy of the codex
itself, there are several of my own foliation errors in the codex. Although no one else has
the actual numbered photographs, I have maintained the errors (and noted them), and
hope to correct this at a future time. The negatives from which the photographs were
printed are held at the RIFIAS, the Research Institute for Inner Asian Studies at Indiana
University. The photographs were done with black-and-white film using a green filter to
bring out the red; in many places it is thus difficult to discern the red from the black,
although I have sought to maintain this as in the typescript for ms. 1443. Overlines are as
given in the original codex.
In order to facilitate study between this codex and Ms. 1443, I have coded both
“additions” and “omissions” (both relative terms that have little meaning here) as
compared to Ms. 1443. “Additions” – that is, text that is given in this codex but not
found at that location in Ms. 1443 (although it might be found elsewhere in the treatise) –
are coded in a dark grey colored text. Omissions – that is, words that appear in Ms. 1443

and not in this codex – are marked by a vertical bar (|). This vertical bar is given even if
the word removed is only a “ki” or a vav. When the tense changes between the codices
without adding or subtracting words, I have coded the word in dark grey but not added
the vertical bar. Obviously, the typescript has been proofed to my handwritten
corrections and again to the photographs; I have not had a second person then proof them
again. Although this process has resulted in the correction of many errors, there may still
be misreadings on the part of this author, or accumulated errors from earlier scribes. We
all beg your forgiveness.
In this version I have made few modernizations to the text. Where the reading is
clear, I have changed “k” to “g” but otherwise I have avoided any modernization of the
original language. I have maintained the use of red ink and overlines from the text
wherever possible, although the overlines in the manuscript are red and I don’t have the
capability to produce a red overline on black text; in those cases the overline and text are
in black. I have added blue text for proper names (on their first use in close proximity),
green for names of works. I have sought to maintain marginalia or anything that seemed
to be a correction as such; in most cases these additions are enclosed in square brackets
and noted. I have added paragraphing and set poetry apart in the manner typical to
modern Persian academic texts. Although poetry was marked in the original manuscript,
paragraphing is my own addition and should therefore be read with caution. Footnotes
have been added with variant readings and other information. Voweling has been added
only as given in the text itself; where clarifications seem needed, they are given in the
footnotes. The treatises in the beginning of the codex always began on their own folio. I
have elected here to begin each treatise on a new page. There were no problems with

catchwords in the codex; the binding may be the original. I have used “a” for the first
(left hand) page of each folio, and “b” for the second (right hand) page. Although the text
has been proofed several times, there may still be errors. Readers should work with
caution, and where possible compare this text to others.
