NOTATIONS
Baroque and Classical
The flute and guitar have a proud history together, beginning with their ancestors, the Greek
aulos and cithara. The Elizabethans played the recorder and lute, and later the modern flute and
guitar were used. However, in the period later 1650, the combination of flute and guitar was not
written for by the great composers. Perhaps this was because for over two centuries the guitar
was considered a mere folk instrument, although Berlioz and Schubert, both used it to aid their
compositions. However, through transcription the music of theses masters can belong to
guitarists, and new areas can open to flautists
“Lard Duo” – duet flute (Zina Kaynarska) and guitar (Shannon Millard) was organised in 2013
and since this time the duet has been performing regularly. In 2014 Zina and Shannon have
recorded CD at Baker Street Studio. The website www.zinaflute.com describes the different
facets of the duet creative life.
Mauro Juilliani (1781- 1829) was an Italian guitarist, cellist, singer and composer. He was a
leading guitar virtuoso of early 19th
century.
Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) – German composer born in Grottkau near Breslau, the son
of Johann Jacob Weiss, also a lutenist, he served at counts in Breslau, Rome and Dresden where
he died. Weiss has been regarded as the greatest and most prolific composers of lute music in
history. He created around 600 compositions, mostly of Baroque dance pieces.
Dresden 13 string Guitar is absolutely unique, designed specifically to function as a baroque lute
for guitarists. It has been the opportunity to play the lute music of Weiss, Bach etc. Directly from
the tablature.
Ciaconne is a type of musical composition popular in the baroque era when it was much used as
a vehicle for variation on a repeated short harmonic progression, often involving a fairly short
repetitive bass-line (ground bass) which offered a compositional outline for variation, decoration,
figuration and melodic invention
François-Joseph Gossec (1734 – 1829) was a French composer of operas, string quartets,
symphonies, and choral works.
Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini (1743 – 1805) was an Italian classical era composer and cellist
whose music retained a courtly and galante style while he matured somewhat apart from the
major European musical centers. Boccherini is most widely known for one particular minuet
from his String Quintet.
F. Chopin (1810 – 1849). Variations on a theme of Rossini. This is an early musical piece by
Frederic composed at the age of 14 - 2 years before he entered the Academy of Music in
Warsaw. Most likely this piece was originally written for domestic use.
Histories of Tango and Other Latin Dance Classics
Tango is a unique combination of folklore, traditions and experience of many nations which has
more than century of history. It appeared at the end of 19th
century in poor immigrant suburbs of
Buenos-Aeros. The dance is based on melodies of Melonga, Habanera and Tango Andalouse.
Habanera is a melts the Spanish folk songs traditions with Cubian rhythms. Tango Andalouse
was created in Cadissa and belongs to classical form of Flamenco and is played in
accompaniment of guitar. Milonga is one of tango variations which uses different dance figures.
Enrike Granados (1867- 1916) was a Spanish pianist and composer of classical music. His
music is a uniquely Spanish style and, as such, is representative of music nationalism. His “12
Danzaz Espanolas” for Piano are the most famous of his compositions. They have been
transcribed for the classical guitar (for example, Danza N5 Andalouse – for flute and guitar).
P. Sarasate (1844-1908) was a basque violinist and compose of the Romantic period. Pablo
Sarasate was born in Pamplona, Navarre, the son of an artillery bandmaster. He began studying
the violin with his father at the age of five and later took lessons from a local teacher. His
musical talent became evident early on and he appeared in his first public concert in A Coruna at
the age of eight.
Émile Louis Fortuné Pessard (1843-1915) was a French composer. Pessard was born and died
in Paris.
Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887 – 1959) was a Brazilian composer described as "the single most
significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music". Villa-Lobos has become the
best-known and most significant Latin American composer to date.[2]
A prolific composer, he
wrote numerous orchestral chamber, instrumental and vocal works, totaling over 2000 works by
his death in 1959. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic
elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras
(Brazilian Bachian-pieces) He composed 9 Bachianos and the most famous is number 5
Celso Machado was born in 1953 in Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Virtuoso guitarist and
percussionist, Celso Machado brings joy to his audiences with his subtle mixture of musical
inspiration and irresistible rhythm. He is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and
exciting musician/composers of Brazilian music today. For over thirty years Celso Machado has
been performing and teaching guitar workshops and master classes throughout Brazil, Western
Europe and Canada.
Michel Kirschner was born in 1952 in Marseille. He started learning music being 5 year old.
His main instruments were accordion and classical guitar. In 1983 he formed the duel with
flautist Remi Cordie. Since this time the duet has been on concert trips in many countries - USA,
Europe, Antilles, Puerto Rice, etc. Tango music is his main interest. Michel created a lot of
compositions and transcriptions for duet flute and guitar.
A Piazzolla (1921-1992) was an Argentine tango composer. He revolutionized the traditional
tango into a new style termed Nuevo Tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical
music.
