On February 26-27, GEN and APImprensa, with the support of Google, gathered the best media innovators in Portugal for a two-day competition to develop innovative news prototypes. The theme was: 'New tools to build a digital community of Portuguese-speaking countries. Portuguese-speakers make up one of the largest online language groups, yet this community is fragmented. Conversations are limited to local news sources and audiences. The Global Editors Network is a cross-platform community of editors-in-chief and media innovators committed to sustainable, high-quality journalism, empowering newsrooms through a variety of programmes designed to inspire, connect and share. Our online community allows media innovators from around the world to interact and collaborate on projects created through our programmes. The GEN Board Members support this mission and have signed the GEN Manifesto.

The Portuguese Publishers Association (APImprensa) founded in 1961, is a non-profit organization with 200 members, publishers covering more than 900 national, regional, specialized, b2b and digital publications. Its main objectives are the promotion of activities which can contribute to the valuation and importance of the Press freedom, as well as a business activity, defending its member’s interests.

The GEN Editors Lab programme is a worldwide series of hackdays hosted by leading news organisations such as The New York Times, The Guardian and El País. Editors Lab brings together developers, journalists and designers from top newsrooms to build news prototypes during an intensive two-day competition. The Global Editors Network has already run two successful Editors Lab seasons and the third season (2014-2015) is already up and running.

of journalists covering a foreign issue and allows readers to easily have background information in the same page where they are reading the news. Also, the widget links back to the article where the information was originally published. The platform was developed to tackle a problem of Portuguese language media spread across five continents, but can be used by pretty much any media outlet.’

The jury praised the usefulness of Publico’s tool for both readers and

news organisations. Delving into new and unfamiliar topics - especially in the domain of foreign affairs - can prove demanding for fickle online news readers. Providing context to these complex stories make them more engaging and easily digestible to the readers. But how to provide context to a story?

Most of the times, journalists content themselves with linking to contextual elements. But links are not the best way to provide context to a story. They derail

The WinnerPública won the competition with Contextualisando. That is how the team describes its project: ‘Most news on any given Portuguese speaking country is of little interest to the rest of the countries in the Portuguese speaking community. However, sometimes a big news breaks in one country that is relevant to the entire Portuguese world, and it gets covered by media outlets in every region.The problem is that neither readers, nor journalists from other countries have enough background context on the particular subject of that big news.

‘Contextualizando (Portuguese for “putting in context”) allows journalists to easily share snippets of background information they already published on their sites, and makes those snippets available to other news sites from the rest of the Portuguese speaking community. Feeding the platform with snippets of text is done with a simple bookmarklet.’

The team also added: ‘On the other end, showing that information alongside any article is done via an embeddable widget. This eases the workload

the readers from the main story by sending them to other articles. The time and the attention span of the readers are limited and journalists can jeopardize the reading experience of their own article by linking it to outside content. But with the spinnets of background info provided by Contextualisando, the readers are informed without leaving the article.

For journalists, it is also a time-saving tool. Instead of wasting time looking for contextual elements and taking the risk to link to articles they are not sure are accurate, with Contextualinsando they have access to a database of relevant and verified information.

Special MentionsMotorpress with ‘Livro do Bebé’ received a special mention from the jury. ‘Livro do B’ is an app that enables pregnant women and young mothers to organize information, photos and videos about their pregnancy and motherhood and to share them with their families and friends in a safe and restricted environment. This app will be built and distributed in all the portuguese-speaking countries by the magazine Pais & Filhos. This app solves a crucial problem of privacy: one does not want to share sensitive information about its pregnancy and pictures of newborns on open social network and would prefer to share this on close and secure network. It also solves a practical problem: one wants to gather all information in a central hub but the solutions to do so (such as cloud storage) are not always user-friendly and have a poor design. Motorpress’ team also thought about the business model of the app. The very precise targeting of this app will make this app very attractive to announcers as it ensures the relevance of their ads and commercial offers. Motorpress’ in-depth understanding of its audience and commercial partners impressed the jury.

La Reconquista received a special mention from the jury for their platform A Praça. This platform targets the portuguese migrants and enables them keep connected to their home towns and villages. First the platform filters information from the different social networks so that users can follow what is going on in their towns/villages of origin. Secondly, A Praça is also a crowdfunding platform for hyper-local projects. The migrants can invest for the projects of their towns/villages of origin. Thirdly, the platform enables them to connect with people coming from their homeland but living in their

destination countries. The jury thought A Praça was a much-needed platform to connect nostalgic migrants to their hometowns and a constructive way to enable them to participate in the development of these territories.

Expresso (team A) received the audience choice award for their project Frater. Frater is a news curation platform that enables its users to have access to articles in portuguese about the countries they are located in. Frater geolocalizes its users or lets its user geolocate themselves and then provides them with need news and contextual informations, in Portuguese, from a wide range of sources around the world about the location where they are at the moment. It targets primarily the Portuguese speaking migrant communities or Portuguese speaking travellers but can also be used by the whole portuguese-speaking community. According to the team, ‘FRATER´s goal is to strengthen the editorial community of Portuguese speaking countries, serving, at the same time, all Portuguese speaking citizens around the world’.

Other Projects

Clube da Saudade: Expresso (team B)’s project aims at creating debates about books, music and news in the Portuguese speaking countries.

Estou Aqui: Diário de Notícias’s project presents news written in Portuguese on an interactive world map and enables its users to summit localized UGC.

Guia SIC: SIC’s project is a second-screen app for the international portuguese-speaking community watching the channel SIC International.

LER: SOL’s project is an international cultural news app focused on books written in Portuguese and book related news (authors, new releases, back stories, interviews).

Professional Stories in Portuguese: CódigoPRO’s project aims at finding interactive and image-rich ways to deliver their content in African portuguese-speaking countries.

“Trás para a Frente”: Nordeste’s project is a mobile app that provides its users with a personalized feed of local information.

Survey SamplesHow would you describe your experience of the event as a whole?

‘It’s amazing to participate in an event like that, with workshops, other teams from other media groups and could do something ‘out of the box’. It’s a great chance to know people, change experiences and think about the future of journalism’. ‘It was a very positive experience. I worked with people from my company with which usually I didn’t have such a direct interaction and It was so good to exchange experience with people from other places’. ‘It makes me want to know more about digital communications. It opened a door’. ‘Tiring but the learning factor compensated’.‘Fine, refreshing and creative’

What was the most useful part of the event for you? Why?

‘Interaction with designers and developers, that is not usual in our newsroom. Training pitches.’‘Networking. Talking to some of the other players in the market’. ‘As a journalist, I enjoyed the exchange of experiences with either web designers and programmers. I took some ideas that I will definitely take back to the newsroom’. ‘It was great to talk with programmers and see how other news outlets work’.‘The competition (hackathon) got me to learn some new technologies and develop my critical thinking on subjects of journalistic nature’. ‘The elaboration of the final work because we implemented the knowledge.’‘Pleasing, enriching and challenging (in a good way)’.

What was the least useful part of the event? Why?

‘The technical details of some talk are new to journalists but not to developers’. ‘The presentations / workshops could have been more hands-on or specific’

What did you think about the masterclass? Were they relevant? Were they too long?

‘ I will explore for sure the tools that were

presented. I’m interested in open journalism and data journalism and I didn’t know many tools that they talked about.’‘ They are relevant and not too long but I miss more examples.’‘Yes, they are relevant. We always learn with that kind of sessions’. ‘They were important to guide us and know more about what is out there. They weren’t too long’.

What did you learn during those two days?

‘Useful tools for infographics’‘CSS and team working’ ‘Creating communities’. ‘I feel that I improved my ability to work in a multidisciplinary team’.‘Well...I did some coding ! Basic of course but as a journalist that is one competence I would like to learn and improve in the future’.

If we come back, on which theme would you like to work?

‘One more day, so the first could have some time to learn and discuss the status of innovation in each others newsrooms’. ‘Temperature… More of IT’. ‘Have more opportunities to see how each team made their projects. We would like to know and learn which tools they used and so on’‘Listen to creators of successful published apps and know how they get along with it’.
