End User Driven Seal Specification StandardAPI-682 is a stand alone seal standard for centrifugal and rotary pumps used in the petroleum refining and chemicalprocess industries. The standard was written by a select committee comprised of end users, pump manufacturersand seal manufacturers including recognized seal industry experts from John Crane.

In keeping with the standards stated purpose, API-682 strives to promote best practices in the selection and operation of mechanical seals so as to extend seal life to a minimum of three years of service. Building upongrowing acceptance of the first edition standard in the user community, the scope of the standard, second edition, has been expanded beyond Oil & Gas API 610 pumps to also include large bore ANSIand ISO chemical duty process pumps. The new 682 2nd Edition standard replaces the long standingmechanical seals specification found in the API-610 pump standard and establishes a new seal standard for ANSIand ISO chemical process pumps.

Your Complete Source for API 682 Seal RequirementsAs the world leader in Chemical and Petrochemical process sealing, John Crane supplies qualification testedmechanical seals in accordance with the API 682 2nd Edition Standard. These seals are the preferred choice forsafe, reliable, single and dual seal arrangements specifically engineered for dependable sealing of light hydrocar-bons, caustics, water, hot oil and other volatile organic compounds. Evolving from John Crane's extensive line ofperformance proven API 682 1st Edition seals, the 2nd Edition covers an expanded range of applications andequipment specific to the Chemical Processing Industry. API-682 Category I establishes the first international seal standard for ANSI and ISO enlarged bore pumps including wet contacting seals, dry-running secondary-containment seals and non-contacting gas-lubricated seal designs.

API-682 has established three distinct seal categories summarized below:

Standard Seal Types and ArrangementsThe API-682 seal selection procedure provides a recommended seal type, arrangement and flush plan for typicalchemical plant or refinery services. Within each of the three categories, API defines three primary seal types andarrangements.

Type A: Rotating pusher seal using o-rings and multiple springs Arrangement 1: Single seal

Type B: Rotating metal bellows using o-rings Arrangement 2: Unpressurized dual (Tandem)

Type C: High Temperature metal bellows using flexible graphite Arrangement 3: Pressurized dual (Double)gaskets. (only applies to Cat. II & III for high temperature services)

Seal Selection SoftwareYou can select and specify your API seal, flush and arrangements criteria using John Crane’s unique API seal selec-tion software, CSelect682. The software will run on a Windows® format and allows seal selection by category, pro-duction of API data sheets, dedicated reports, drawings and piping plans, and a host of useful basic formula andcalculations. For your copy contact your local John Crane representative.

ANSI / ISO Process PumpsAPI-682 Category I seals are intended for specification to pumps with seal chambers conforming to the ASMEB73.1, B73.2 or ISO 3069 Type C standard.

API Standard 682 gives comprehensive seal selection guidance. Every effort has been made to ensure that this program accurately reflectsthe recommendations outlined in API Standard 682. Neither John Crane nor its representative is responsible for any problems arising fromusing this software in connection with the seal selection process.

John Crane recommends confirming the selection with the seal supplier. In accordance with its general policy, the American PetroleumInstitute has not endorsed nor recommended this computer program, John Crane products or any other manufacturer’s products.

John Crane strongly recommends the user/specifier purchase his/her own copy of the entire Standard for reference in conjunction with theuse of this computer program. Original copies of API Standard 682 are available from the American Petroleum Institute, 1220 L Street, NW,Washington, D.C. 20005.

Non-contacting Gas-lubricated Seals Category IIn 1994 John Crane revolutionized zero emission sealing with the development and patent of the first non-contacting gas-lubricated mechanical seal for chemical duty process pumps, the Type 2800. The Type 2800and Type 2800MB comprise the John Crane Category I API 682 Second Edition non-contacting gas-lubricated sealproduct line. As the world leader in gas seal technology and experience John Crane has amassed over 70 millionoperating hours of reliable zero emission operation on pumps worldwide.

These seals represent the state of the art advanced dry-running, non-contacting sealing technology for process pumpapplications. Zero emissions, high performance, extended seal life, reduced power consumption, and wet seal system elimination are achieved. Per Arrangement 3, the Type 2800 and Type 2800MB operate using an available pressurized inert barrier gas source to positively seal hazardous process fluids with zero emissions to the atmosphere.

Category II & III Seals for API-610 PumpsAPI-682 Category II or III seals are intended for specification to pumps conforming to the API-610 pump standard. The vast majority of process plant services that were previously defined "API-610 seals" will generally now bespecified as API-682 Category II seals. This provides for flexibility in flush arrangement and bushing selection thatis otherwise fixed in Category III.

Type A Category II & III Contacting Wet Seals John Crane API 682 Type A seals are based on the successful, proven, Type 48 design. These dependable, engi-neered mechanical seals were developed specifically to attain Maximum Achievable Control Technology compli-ance in hydrocarbons and other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

Category II seals are designed to handle “general purpose” API (American Petroleum Institute) applications and con-tain the same qualification tested components and arrangements as the premium Category III API cartridge seals.

Category II, Arrangement 1 seals are available with a variety of bushing and flush configurations providing youwith more flexibility in your API seal selection. Pick the arrangement best suited for you particular application. Youcan specify a Category II, Arrangement I seal to include all of the features of a Category III seal without therequirement of documentation to accompany the seal.

The low-tem-perature and high-temperature bellows seals are utilized in a variety of hydrocarbon services. The Types 1604, 2609,and 3609, with flexible graphite packings are ideal for demanding high temperature applications. The Type 1670,2670, and 3670 with Alloy C-276 rotating bellows seal provides high strength and excellent corrosion resistance.

As with Cat. I, in addition to the Type A and B contacting wet seals, Cat. II & III also include dry-running secondary-containment seals and non-contacting gas-lubricated seals.
