High efficiency impellers are individually secured against axial displacement.
A variety of wear part materials for clean, corrosive or abrasive applications are supplied
Over 100 different hydraulics with 11,000 Nss or less are standard. Optional impellers available for improved suction performance.
Double suction first stage impellers (which reduce NPSHr on BBS, CD and BBT-D's) are ideal for processing unit capacity increases.
Proven Coke Crushers are available for coking applications, such as coker heater charge service.

The Challenge:
 Some refining & petrochemical processes
produce coke particles or chunks. If those particles are too large, they are
trapped between impeller vanes and reduce or stall flow.
Sulzer’s Coke Crusher is used on the first
stage to break up those particles and help
maintain pump output.

Sulzer PumpsCoke Crushers
The larger coke chunks enter the
pump suction and find their way to the first stage impeller.
As they approaches the impeller, they encounters the coke crusher
rotors. Small particles pass
between the rotor blades and
through the impeller
The "chunky" particles are impaled on the rotor blade notches and
rotated around to the stator lugs –
where they are crushed into smaller particles that will pass thru the
impeller

Sulzer PumpsType CD: Engineered Version of BBS
Common applications include:
9 MW (12,000 hp) Steam Generator Feed Pumps in Nuclear Power plants (since 1960's)
12 MW (15,000 hp) pipeline pumps since 1980's
Flowrates to over 6800 m3/h (30,000 GPM) and head to nearly 900m (3000 ft) have been running for years
For high pressure, higher capacity or combinations of both, the Sulzer CD
pump is engineered specifically for each
order

Volute Casing
Per ISO 13709 (API 610) pressure boundary components are designed to 25% of Ultimate Tensile Strength x 0.8 casting factor = 20% of UTS, plus an additional 3mm (1/8") corrosion allowance
Top suction and discharge nozzles are standard with back facing required by ISO 13709 (API 610)
ANSI 300# RF or 600# RF flanges are provided; DIN flanges are available
Volutes are opposed on BBT to balance radial loads. Double volutes used on larger sizes
End covers are confined controlled compression gaskets with metal to metal rabbet fit.

Mounting & Baseplates
Pump casings are designed for 2 times ISO 13709 (API 610) Table 4 nozzle loads
2 times ISO 13709 (API 610) nozzle loads may be utilized on most sizes with baseplate reinforcement
Grouted, non-grouted or even 3 point clevis mount baseplates are available for motor or steam turbine drivers -onshore or offshore.
ISO 13709 (API 610) defined baseplate dimensions are standard. Similar designs and standards are used where larger bases are required to accommodate larger size pumps or drivers

Classically Stiff Rotor Design
ISO 13709 (API 610) requires a classically stiff
rotor design on 1 and 2 stage pumps. Such
designs cannot rely on wear parts for rotor stability.
Unlike similar pumps from other suppliers,
BBS, BBT and BBT-D pumps are designed for 60 Hz speeds. First critical speed is an
additional 20% above 60 Hz design speeds.
Using affinity laws, radial loads at 60 Hz are
potentially 44% greater than at 50 Hz (Head
and dP vary as square of the speed)
Other pumps that might be designed for 50 Hz
speeds may have their first critical at operating
speed when run at 60 Hz, and have significant shaft deflection at the mechanical seals when
run at 60 Hz speeds.
 This means the BBS, BBT
and BBT-D pumps are even more reliable on 50 Hz applications.

Wear Parts & Seal Chambers
Sulzer’s year long wear testing study
improved wear part materials and
reduced galling tendencies
For improved seal life, safety and
component interchangeability, both
seal chambers are under suction pressure
ISO 13709 (API 610) Table 6 seal chambers are provided for improved
seal environment.
ISO 21049 (API 682) single, tandem or dual cartridge type mechanical seals
and support systems are available to
meet process requirements.
For abrasive services, Sulzer
Metco's SUME coatings are superior.
SUME coated impellers outlast other
materials in sandy and erosive applications at both ambient and
high temperature

Bearing Systems
Carbon Steel finned bearing housings readily
dissipate heat.
Ring Oil lubricated ball bearings are standard on most sizes and speeds.
Larger sizes and higher speeds utilize sleeve radial, ball thrust bearings.
Sleeve radial, pivot shoe thrust bearings and force feed lube systems are available.
Cooling fans, water cooling, oil mist taps and a variety of instrumentation are available.
 Inpro bearing isolators are standard.
Thrust bearings are 40 degree angular contact with machined bronze cages. Radial bearings
are ball with C3 clearance.

Manufacturing & Testing
Castings are procured from Sulzer owned or qualified foundries
Most BBS, BBT and BBT-D components are produced on multi-axis CNC machining centers
Quality checks are accomplished with calibrated equipment in accordance with ISO 9001 and other standards
A variety of non-destructive examination methods are available to meet customer requirements
Performance test data is captured using Sulzer’s CATS data capture software

BBS pumps are commonly found in refineries or petrochemical plants on high temperature or higher flow applications
Materials range from S-5 (Carbon Steel casing and impeller with 12% Chrome hardened wear parts), to 317L SS for high temperature corrosive Naphthenic crude oil services
Mechanical seal support systems can
sometimes dwarf even a large BBS
pump

Since the 1960's, Sulzer Model CD pumps are probably the most common Steam Generator Feed Pumps in the N. American nuclear power industry
They typically run at over 4000 RPM and produce nominally 760m (2500 ft) of head in a single stage
Power levels are 5 to 11 MW (6000 to 15000 hp)
Either mechanical seals or controlled
leakage sealing systems are used
depending upon customer preference

BBT single suction 2 stage pumps
In some cases, even 2 stage pumps are hidden by all the seal support, instrumentation, and cooling water systems associated with the pump.
In this case the Plan 23 seal flush coolers and the Plan 52 secondary seal flush reservoirs overshadow the pump they are designed to support.
