AssignmentEnvironmental Conservation and the Human Predicament

Interdisciplinary discussion of the human predicament, environmental pollution, biosecurity issues, and importance of environmental conservation. Examines issues from biological, cultural, historical, economic, social, political, and ethical perspectives emphasizing new approaches and new techniques for safeguarding the future of humans and other biosphere inhabitants.

Participants are divided in to two groupsGroup 1: Human species will exploit, pollute the earth and

move on to other planets.Group 2: Human species will discover interdependence of

life forms and their environment and evolve a sustainable living with available planetary resources.

Participants are encouraged to utilize the Internet facility available at KOICA for the preparation. Power

Point and other Microsoft Office software are available at the center. Participants are encouraged to prepare in

advance before arrival if they could or use the week-ends and off-lecture hours for the preparation.

AMETEC 2006

Training Workshop on Nutrient Analysis and Quality Assurance/Quality Control: Enhancing Reliability and Comparability of Data for the Integrated Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP), 15-27 October 2006, Quezon City, Philippines.

AMETEC’S FUTURE

2006 Questionnaire to MRCWG showed that: (a) Main concerns are with Eutrophication/Nutrients/Organic matter, Oil,

POPs, Heavy Metals;(b) Training should focus on post-B.Sc. Education;(c) Training sessions should be held outside Korea;(d) Longer-term training for fewer trainees should be considered;(e) AMETEC should be a “bridge” for technology transfer within APEC.

AMETEC’s Response:AMETEC training already focuses on Eutrophication (etc.) Oil and POPs and offers training at the post-B.Sc. Level ((a) and (b) above); One workshop has already been held in Philippines; others will be planned ((c) above);Longer term training involves reconsideration of funding priorities but will be discussed ((d) above);As well as offering formal training, AMETEC sponsors conferences and symposia ((e) above).

Fun

SUMMARYo AMETEC undertook two training sessions (one co‐

operatively with KOICA) and co‐sponsored one symposium in 2008/09;

o AMETEC’s (and its precursors’) activities during the past 15 y are addressing most of the concerns of “client” economies;

o Future AMETEC activities could include longer‐term residential training at KORDI SSRI for fewer trainees, and operation of training workshops outside Korea; both of these initiatives have funding implications;

o Overall, the AMETEC facility at KORDI/SSRI is an excellent laboratory and training facility, well‐equipped and well staffed, and deserves to be used.
