Make your idea into real business and access global market quickly through "APEC Accelerator Network"

APEC Accelerator Network is……a platform which provides innovative start-ups and investors funding opportunities and possible investments in the APEC region.

The importance of accelerator has been well addressed in recent years after witnessing lots of successful stories from Silicon Valley, including 500 Startups, Y Combinator and TechStarts, etc. Inspired by those accelerators, Chinese Taipei launched the "APEC Startup Accelerator Initiative" (ASA) in 2013, to identify possible opportunities for SMEs and Start-ups to raise capitals so as to effectively scale up and grow their business.

Recognizing the great challenge in accessing the early-stage investment for innovative start-ups and high growth SMEs, meanwhile, taking ASA to the next step, we strengthen its impact through establishing APEC Accelerator Network (AAN) in 2014. This efforts aim to tackle this difficulty by creating a regional resource sharing platform to further benefit start-ups and investors in the APEC region.

Established in Taichung, Chinese Taipei on March 25, 2014, AAN has 47 members from 15 APEC economies. 75% of the 47 AAN accelerators have been set up more than 3 years. Apparently most of them are characterized by phenomenal experience and expertise, which are beneficial for start-ups to run business in early stage. In this Directory, it is easy to find specific accelerator with various categories which readers are interested in such as locations, sectors, seed funding terms and so on. Start-ups may utilize it to look for necessary support when soft landing in new geographic markets, while at the same time accelerators can find out more cooperation opportunities with AAN.

This directory is not intended as an exhaustive list of accelerators. We welcome and hope to see more accelerators in the Asia Pacific region joining this network, aiming at constructing a better and better innovation ecosystem collaboratively. With all member economies' effective engagement in AAN, we are looking forward to seeing a more vigorous and startup-friendly ecosystem in the near future.

Message from APEC SMEWG ChairThe main theme for the 2014 APEC has been set as "Shaping the Future through Asia-Pacific Partnership". The goal is to make Asia-Pacific region an economic engine to lead the global economic growth. In view of that, APEC Economic Leaders have acknowledged the importance of start-up development and acceleration in the Asia-Pacific region to urge all of us must collectively bring impetus to the regional economic integration, innovation, and reform.

Additionally, with the leader' s instruction in mind and recognizing the fact uncovered by Global Accelerator Network (GAN) that 60% of accelerators are currently located in North American, whereas only 14% are in Asia, Chinese Taipei conducted APEC Accelerator Network (AAN) Project from 2014 for the purpose of bringing accelerators from the APEC region with the intensive cooperation on mentoring, funding matchmaking and networking in an attempt to foster a sustainable mechanism for improving start-up ecosystem and the regional economic growth.

As the Chair of APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Working Group (SMEWG), I wish to thank Chinese Taipei and all colleagues that have contributed to the implementation of this project and the participation of APEC Accelerator Network. Moreover, I would like to extend my deep appreciation for the support on the establishment APEC Accelerator Network from ABAC and global well-known associations pertaining to start-up issues such as Global Accelerator Network (GAN), National Business Incubation Association (NBIA), European Business and Innovation Center Network (EBN) and Asian Association of Business Incubation (AABI). It is with the strong support from them so that up to now 47 top accelerators from 15 economies in the APEC region have joined this network, which are Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Philippines; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; The United States and Viet Nam.

The purpose of this directory for the APEC region, aside from enabling all stakeholders can easily access the mentioned top 47 accelerators, I consider, is also to capture the start-up accelerator trend in the region for public sectors' reference in order to design appropriate policies accordingly. What's more, this directory in the future will be kept updating and ultimately be expanded to an inclusive directory by incorporating more AAN members, promising start-ups, business angles and venture capitals engaging in early-stage investment, so as to facilitate all economies to promote SMEs development on accessing global markets and Investment.

I believe that, with the continuous effort on promoting APEC Accelerator Network in our region, we can anticipate the boost on the cooperation between public and private and a better start-up ecosystem to enhance the business matching for the innovative start-ups and high-growth SMEs in the APEC region.

How to Choose the BestAccelerator for Your Team

How to Choose the Best Accelerator for Your TeamFor start-ups, there are so many accelerators out there, and they function in different kinds of ways. Therefore, it is important to evaluate which accelerator will be a good match for driving your success. Here are some good advice for your consideration before partnering with an accelerator.

1. The expertise and involvement of accelerator's leaders and mentors. What's the strength and experience of the leaders and mentors of the accelerator! How well they align with your business strategy! It would be a great help if the leaders and mentors can warn you of mistake to avoid, based on their experience. Besides, how much they can dedicate time and resource to help start-ups is an important factor to evaluate.

2. Accelerator's partner network. An accelerator fledges start-ups by providing targeted resources and services, usually offered both in the accelerator and through its network of contacts. Looking for an accelerator enabling you to access to key man that might seem inaccessible at first glance, and through the connection with the right people locally and regionally you may accelerate the business.

3. Reliable success stories of an accelerator through alumni's sharing.Investigating over alumni's growth, big funding announcements or product-launching enables you to evaluate how successful an accelerator is. An accelerator should have a high success rate in helping start-up sustain its business rather than just helping them obtain initial funding. Besides, ask alumni how the accelerator copes with the emotional stress that start-ups typically go through.

4. Location of the accelerator.Sometimes relocation may improve your likelihood of success, since every city specializes in different kinds of industries that may align to your business. Taipei is great for cultural and creative industry; and New Orleans for music. Moreover, most start-ups will incorporate in their accelerator's city, so take the local economy and business tax incentives into consideration.

Above all, please be aware that even you find a right accelerator; you still need to be able to think for yourself. Mentors can provide you with the information, but you need to answer them yourself. Be coachable, but also keep your own thoughts.
