Slavery: The early days

• Slavery can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, circa 1760 BC.• Slavery has been found in almost every culture, including Sumer.• How slaves were determined was by race, color, etc.• If a country takes another, usually it’s city's population becomes slaves, like when the Babylonians conquered the Assyrians.

Apartheid: The early days Apartheid started much later, tracing back to 1894. Believe it or not, the British started what we now know is apartheid. They started it by passing the General Pass Regulations Bill. Apartheid was mainly in South Africa, but there have been many isolated cases. Apartheid only lasted about 40-50 years.

• Slavery in Africa started in the 16th century• Most slaves were shipped in from the Arabian peninsula.• Most preferred female slaves instead of male ones.• The Atlantic slave trade picked up in the late 18th century.• The triangular system was extremely organized.

• South Africa picked up apartheid in 1948.

• Most laws were passed between 1948 and 1970.

• Some examples are the Bantu Education Act, Immortality Act, and the Terrorism Act.

• All acts passed (there were 25) limited black’s rights.

• As of today, slavery exists mainly in 9 countries in Africa.

• Most laws about modern slavery have been passed later than 1980.

Apartheid: Main Abolition• Apartheid was abolished by many

groups and people, with Mandela being the most famous.

• Steven Biko failed. He was clubbed by the police, and died 3 days later, on 9/12/1977.

• The legal aspect of apartheid was abolished in 1991.

• In 1993, de Klerk and Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize.

• Mandela was elected president in April of 1994.
