Implementation of Misdemeanor Docket for Indian Country BIA
ALBUQUERQUE –John Anderson, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, announces the implementation of a misdemeanor docket through the Central Violations Bureau which will permit fed-eral officers to issue citations for petty misdemeanors com-mitted on tribal lands. The Central Violations Bureau is a national bureau that processes citations written by federal officers for petty misdemeanor offenses. Persons cit-ed have the option of paying a collateral forfeiture in a fixed amount or appearing
in federal court be-fore a United States Magistrate Judge.
In April 2019, the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico ap-proved an order set-ting a schedule of penalties for forty-six misdemeanor offens-es. Offenses include trespass, destroying fences or signs, depri-vation of property of a household member, criminal damage to property, and certain traffic offenses. Cita-tions may be issued to non-natives located on or passing through tribal lands where the crime directly affects tribal members or tribal interests. Cita-tions may also be is-sued to tribal mem-bers for offenses com-mitted on tribal lands where they have not been charged in tribal court for the same of-fense.
The United States At-torney’s Office for the District of New Mexico has been working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Jus-tice Services and with tribal police depart-ments to train officers in the process of issu-ing these citations and the agencies expect to be issuing citations immediately.

What you need to know about the flu Recent News
Influenza or the Flu is a respiratory illness caused by a virus. It is highly contagious and is normally spread by the coughs and sneez-es of an infected per-son.
You can catch the flu by touching an infect-ed person, for in-stance, shaking hands. Adults are contagious 1-2 days before getting symptoms and up to 7 days after becoming ill. This means you can spread the virus before you even know you are infected.
Key points to know:
You can’t treat the flu with antibiotics
The best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vac-
cine each year
The flu vaccine is not suitable for people who have severe allergies to chicken eggs
Symptoms
Don’t confuse the flu with a bad cold. Flu and cold symptoms may both include a runny/blocked nose, sore throat and a cough.
To help tell them apart, below are some symptoms of flu that are different from a heavy cold:
high temperatures
cold sweats and shivers
Headache
aching joints and limbs
fatigue, feeling ex-hausted
There may also be gas-trointestinal symp-toms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; these are much more common among chil-dren than adults.
Not every person with flu will have all the symptoms, for in-stance, it’s possible to have the flu without the fever.
Fatigue is one of the early signs of flu and cold. With flu, fatigue is more extreme. Oth-er early symptoms are cough, sore throat, fe-ver, body ache, chills and gastrointestinal changes.

When to see a doctor
A doctor needs to be informed if:
the individual is frail or elderly
temperature re-mains high after 4-5 days
symptoms worsen
the individual feels seriously ill
they become short of breath and/or chest pain
Risks
In the majority of cas-es, flu is not serious – it is unpleasant. For some people, there can be severe compli-cations. This is more likely for very young children, the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses.
Flu complications for certain people:
adults over 65
babies or young children
pregnant women
individuals with heart or cardiovas-cular disease
those with chest problems, such as asthma or bronchi-tis
individuals with kidney diseases
people with diabe-tes
people taking ster-oids
individuals under-going treatment for cancer
those individuals with diseases that reduce immune sys-tem function
Some of the complica-tions caused by influ-enza may include bac-terial pneumonia, de-hydration, and worsen-ing of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart fail-ure, asthma, or diabe-tes. Children may de-velop problems and ear infections.
Prevention
In the United States, over 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications each year, and about 36,000 people are estimated to die as a result of the flu.
A flu epidemic is where a large number of people in one coun-try are infected and can last several weeks.
The flu shot is adminis-tered with a needle. The nasal spray flu vaccine is a vaccine made with live, weak-ened flu viruses that do not cause illness. There are 3 types of
flu viruses – influenza A, B, and C. Types A & B viruses cause sea-sonal epidemics. Type C influenza virus caus-es mild respiratory ill-ness and is not respon-sible for outbreaks.
See your doctor about the seasonal flu shot. Protection begins about 2 weeks after receiving the vaccina-tion. Flu outbreaks usually peak around January but can hap-pen as early as Octo-ber.
