AP World History Syllabus 2019-2020 Rene Paragas, Instructor Email [email protected] Website www.reneparagas.com Course Description: Advanced Placement World History: Modern (or WHAP), is a course designed to engage students to investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1200 CE to the present. Course Goals: Demonstrate understanding of many cultures, time periods and trends from 1200 CE to the present Write well-supported essays on historical topics with clarity and precision Analyze both primary and secondary documents from multiple perspectives and draw conclusions based on evidence Prepare and take the World History AP exam in May for possible future college credit Course Expectations for Students: The successful WHAP student: reads assigned materials prior to discussion in class and take notes as needed. participates actively in class by asking questions, suggesting theories, working enthusiastically with classmates, and staying informed about his/her progress on a regular basis. completes work on time. Late work will bear an increasing penalty based on due date. “On time” work is handed in immediately upon request by the instructor. Later in the day (or later in the class period) is still considered late work. Work assigned during excused absences is granted per the district policy. If assigned before the absence, work is due upon return to class. Unexcused absences will automatically result in half-credit for work due, work completed in class, and work assigned during the absence. speaks to Mr. Paragas about any concerns regarding grading, assignments, preparation method, etc. as soon as they become apparent. . Course Expectations for Instructor: The successful AP instructor: provides guidance in the content and skills required for a successful AP Exam experience. is accessible for individual assistance in preparation strategies. provides moral support as students learn new strategies and content. This includes feedback and learning experiences that are not punitive in nature, but encourage responsibility and growth from the student. designs classroom activities to maximize student learning and time usage. prepares for class with diligence, including timely return of classwork to students. keeps grades up-to-date, and is transparent regarding rationale and expectations for assessed activities. THEMES : WHAP information is organized around six themes. These “big picture” ideas will be emphasized throughout the course and will be posted in the classroom under the acronym SPICE-T. 1. REGIONS:TheWHAPglobeisdividedintogeographicregions,toassiststudentsinovercomingtheEurocentrismofmostWorldHistorycourses.Europeanhistorywillcomprisenomorethan20%ofourcontent.StudywillfocussignificantlyonAfrica,AsiaandLatinAmerica.Studentswillalsoreceiveahardcopyofthemaponday1.

HISTORICALREASONINGSKILLS:Factualcontentisnotjustmeanttobememorized,buttobeconsidereda

toolthroughwhichstudentscanpracticethethinkingskillsutilizedbyprofessionalhistorians.Theseskillsinclude:

1.Analyzingandinterpretingprimaryandsecondarysources. 2.Historicalargumentationandtheuseofevidence,usingbothtextandnon-textsources. 3.Comparison,contextualization,andevaluationsofrelativesignificance. 4.Chronologicalreasoning,includingcausationandpatternsofcontinuityandchange.
