AP STATISTICS SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
Introduction: Welcome to AP Statistics. Below are the directions for the summer assignment for the 2017-
2018 school year. The purpose of this assignment is to get us off to a strong start to the school year by
covering most of the first chapter of the course text. This will ensure that we have sufficient time to cover all
of the material in the course and ample time to review for the AP exam. The first chapter is mostly a review
of content you have learned in previous math courses. During the school year, you would normally have 7-10
days to get this work done. Please read these directions carefully and contact me by email at
[email protected] if you have any questions about the assignment or require clarification about my
expectations of the work that you do.
Required Resources: The textbook we will be using is The Practice of Statistics
Textbook (Starnes, Yates, Moore, 4th ed.). I will refer to this book as TPS4E
throughout the year. This textbook is well-aligned to the AP Statistics curriculum and
the sample problems and activities will prepare you well for the AP Statistics exam.
You will also need access to the internet and a TI-83/84 graphing calculator (you can
use the Inspire, but I will be demonstrating problems on the TI-84+ all year). Tips on
how to use each calculator are provided throughout the course textbook.
Assignment:
Read all of Chapter One: Exploring Data in TPS4E. There are 81 pages in this first chapter, but it is
probably the easiest chapter we will cover. Pay careful attention to the sample problems in the blue
boxes, the calculator procedures, and the AP Exam tips that are located in the page margins.
Take notes and answer the questions as you read. The questions tend to follow the chapter in the
order that the information is presented. When you come to alternative example problems, complete
these to assess your level of understanding of the content., but they aren’t part of the actual
assignment
Complete the practice Free Response questions (FRAPPYs) that have been attached.
Complete all of the problem sets for Chapter One that are listed below on separate paper. All work
MUST be shown for these problems:
o Page 7 (1, 3, 5, 8), Page 22 (11, 17, 18)
o Page 24 (20, 22, 23, 27, 29, 32)
o page 42 (37-43 odd, 44)
o page 48 (69-73 odd), page 70 (83, 85, 88, 89)
o page 71 (91, 93, 94a, 95), page 72 (99, 102, 107, 109, 111)
Caution about Academic Integrity: DO NOT copy the answers to any of the assignments above from
sources you find on the internet. Doing so will be considered plagiarism and consequences of such behavior
will be severe. Answers you find on the internet are sometimes incorrect and will often be stated using
terminology and techniques from an alternative textbook or teaching approach. This will make it easy for me
to identify work that is not your own.
Due Date and Submission Procedures: Summer assignments must be completed by the first day of AP
Statistics class. I will not accept any late assignments so do not wait for the last minute to work on these.
Again, this is a typical assignment load for a 7-10 day stretch of AP Statistics. I WILL NOT be listening to
any excuses about why the assignment was not completed so don’t tell me about any. If you are serious about
taking this class, working harder than you’ve ever worked before and studying hard for the AP Statistics
Exam, you will GET IT DONE. Good luck!!!
Grading of Summer Assignment: The entire summer assignment will be counted as a test grade. GET IT
DONE!!! NO EXCEPTIONS and NO EXCUSES!!!!
If you come to the first class and the Summer Assignment has not been completed, you will have to drop the
class. I am not sure how else to say this. This is why we call it Summer Assignment.
Again, if you have any questions, email me.
Enjoy Your Summer!
