THE “REAL WORLD” INEQUALITY
Keith Foster
Essential Question
Why are women treated differently than men within the workplace?
What is Gender? When most here the word Gender, they think: Boy
or Girl. This is somewhat true but what many don’t realize is that gender is who you see yourself as.
“Sexuality is who you go to bed with; gender is who you go to bed as.”
Gender Inequality Within gender there are countless inequalities. Most inequality that appears between men and
women happens in the workforce and at home.
Treatment Between the Genders “The achievement of full equality between women
and men is one of the most important prerequisites for global prosperity and the advancement of society.” ("Equality of Women and Men")
Salary Differences Studies have shown that for every 1 dollar a man
makes, a woman make about seventy-five to eighty-five percent of that (Learn Liberty Video).
Salary Differences Cont. Many Factors contribute to the differences in
earnings. One main factor is career choice; most women go
into social careers while men go into business relates careers.
Why are Salaries Different Equity in pay may not only be impacted by
workplace discrimination. Research shows that, disregarding the
qualification level, women’s predominant jobs pay less on average than men’s.
Treatment Differences Even now, women are treated differently than
men. Even if the woman and man have the same job
title, usually the man will be given the work that inevitably pays more.
Treatment Differences Cont. Due to female characteristics, the man would be
more likely chosen to do higher paying physical work than a woman.
Why are Women Treated Differently? Women have always been the figure in the
household to stay home and take care of the children.
Women are sometimes treated as less capable or interested in working than men, instead of being treated as individuals.
Some Facts There is a greater number of women working
today but are less paid. Women are closing the gap in degrees earned,
power and prestige. Pay between women and men has barely
narrowed since the 1990’s
Discrimination Women are not likely to surpass men for a
promotion within the same job. The most common term for this is “The Glass Ceiling.”
This expression appears to indicate a symbolic barrier within the corporate hierarchy where women are not often allowed to pass
Not Enough Women Women are actually graduating at a higher rate
than men. It seems logical that the future of the workplace will belong to women.
More women are needed in the
workplace.
History Repeats Its Self Women had significant salary gains in the eighties
and nineties which have now not only leveled off, but dropped off all together and once again men’s salaries are pulling ahead.
Pregnancy in the Workplace Another obstacle that women have to face is
pregnancy. Many women have filed law suits about discrimination because of pregnancy and the number is growing.
Pregnancy Discrimination Many excuses are used by employers
like: fear of health and safety of a pregnant employee is her job consists of any physical labor.
