HOSW Symbols of Unity

Since the first gathering of the Healing our Spirit

rta

d the

Worldwide Movement (HOSW), Nechi Institute, Albe

Canada in 1992, indigenous peoples have donated

symbols that represent indigenous Recovery and

Hope to the care of the HOSW movement. At this

stage the collection is made up from Canadian,

The Kaumatua, Chiefs and Elders who attende

first gathering were of the understanding that these

symbols of indigenous Recovery and Hope would

remain in the care of the host nation, and would visit

places where indigenous healing takes place,

especially in the field of addictions. It was agreed that

these symbols of indigenous Recovery and Hopewould be brought to the next international HOSW

gathering and be displayed throughout the gathering.

 As the HOSW movement has grown, so has the

on of collection, which is now kept in Canada. A selecti

the collection will be presented to the Sixth Gathering

reminding us of the HOSW journey.

Healing Our Spirit WorldwideMovement

The Healing Our Spirit Worldwide movement began as one

persons vision to create an international forum and

movement focused on the alcohol and drug abuse issues

and programs in Indigenous communities throughout the

global community.

With the Second Gathering (1994) in Sydney, Australia

and the Third (1998) in Rotorua, Aotearoa (New Zealand),

HOSW established itself as the international cultural and

spiritual movement celebrating the tenacity and resilience of

Indigenous peoples around the world in the struggle against

alcohol and drug abuse.

The fourth gathering of HOSW held in Albuquerque, New

Mexico (2002), expanded the vision with the inclusion of

health and governance issues. The Fourth Gathering

provided two important developments:

The Covenant

 A document to be designed for use at many levels,promoting health and healing and ensuring these issues

have a prominent place in the everyday life of Indigenous

peoples around the world was formulated to provide

guidance and direction for Indigenous peoples in developing

models of healing, self-determination and wholeness.

The International Indigenous Council

The vision-keeping and advisory body consisting of

Indigenous leaders from different countries; Maggie

Hodgson (Vision Keeper), Rod Jeffries (Chair), Allan

Benson, from Canada, Dave Balridge from the US, MickGouda from Australia and Barry Bublitz from Aotearoa.

Healing Our Spirit WorldwideCovenant

Celebrating that our Creator as given Indigenous

Peoples, who belong to the land and the sea, a unique

and rich collection of gifts including mother earth, the

sky and water, or families and nations, our culture and

wisdom and our own lives;

Recognizing that these gifts rest at the heart of our

 past, our present and our future;

Believing that the Spirit is the energy that empowers

us to share, replenish, protect and respect these gifts

according to the Creator’s design;

Remembering the devastation and confusion that

colonization brought, including alcohol and disease;

Grieving for the land taken and the loss of communal

life

We the Indigenous Peoples of the world having come

together as part of the Healing Our Spirit Worldwide

movement declare with one voice and heart our

resolve to strengthen the Spirit of our Nations and

Peoples, to clear from our hearts and minds the clouds

of confusion and doubt.

We hold as true and as our guide the teaching of our

grandmothers and grandfathers that;

We hold a sacred role to protect, maintain and respect

the Creator’s gifts so that our children and generations

of children after them may live a healthy and rich life;

Our responsibility to address, enhance and restore our

sacred role; as custodians of these gifts we need to

make wise decisions because we are accountable to

the Creator and to generations to come;The health and well-being of our people and nations is

built on our ability to maintain compassionate,

functioning relationships within ourselves, with the

earth, each other, our families and communities;

Knowledge and wisdom are our partners and we must

enrich them both and use them well if our children are

to build a meaningful future.

We commit ourselves to work in unity and with resolve

to strengthen and heal the spirit of our Peoples

- PRESS RELEASE -

Indigenous people worldwide turn to “Healing Our Spirit”

September 3-9 Gathering in Honolulu

The beaches of Oahu will echo with indigenous drums from around the Western hemisphere for a week in early

September. More than 3,000 indigenous visitors from around the world converge in Waik  k  on September 3.

There, Indigenous people from Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, U.S, Canadian First Nation tribes and Pacific

nations - including governmental and tribal leaders - will join other indigenous people from around the world,

welcoming a colourful fleet of voyaging canoes arriving from all Hawaiis islands.

The welcoming ceremony will kick off a week of intensive spiritual and practical meetings designed to begin or

continue healing from the damaging effects of worldwide European colonisation. Whether it be substance abuse,

family dysfunction, or violence, we have all suffered from amazingly similar problems, says Hardy Spoehr,

conference host and executive director of Papa Ola Lkahi, the Native Hawaiian board of health. This Gathering

will bring together the warmth, the experience, and the wisdom of many indigenous cultures. Well share our stories,

our experiences, our paths to healing. Its a moving experience for everyone involved.

There will be special tracks for keikichildren aged 5-12, youth from 13-24 years, and adults from many countries.

More than 300 sessions will be conducted, punctuated with spiritual events and a wide range of indigenous music.

The event will become the sixth gathering since the HOSW movement began. Maggie Hodgson, a Carriere First

Nations woman from Canada, began the movement with her advocacy at the International Congress on Alcohol and

 Addictions (ICAA) and the World Health Organization in the late 1980s. Her energy and inspiration along with Rod

Jeffries, a Mohawk man, resulted in the first HOSW Gathering, held in Edmonton, Canada in 1992. It attracted

3,300 people from 17 countries. Since then, the Healing Our Spirit Worldwide movement has blossomed, with five

countries having hosted Gatherings.

 At this years Gathering, numerous prominent Maori leaders including the Honourable Minister Tariana Turia,

Masters of the Oceans, Hector Busby and Rawiri Paratene, will make featured presentations.

With more than 65 presentations from Aotearoa around mental health, addiction, Maori research and whanau ora,

the Hawaii Gathering should result in a real exchange of good indigenous ideas and stories, says conference

director Vicky Holt Takamine. Equally exciting, a dozen excursions will give visitors to the islands an intimate look

at the people, Indigenous cultures, and even the traditional healers of Hawaii.
