THE NOBLE IDEALS EMBODIED in the Olympic spirit are definitely alive and well in Canada. Algoma residents did their share in keeping Canada’s – and the world’s - attention on the countdown to Vancouver 2010. In spite of last weekend’s biting cold, they showed up to support and cheer on 20 young ‘Olympic Am- bassadors’ from the CASS Student Athletic As- sociation, as they proudly carried the Olympic Torch from Sudbury to Thessalon. A ‘Blue Moon’ welcomes 2010!

DID YOU SEE IT? They don’t happen veryoften. You might say ‘only once in a BlueMoon’!

The term ‘Blue Moon’ is given to the secondfull moon to occur in any given month. For usin the Western Hemisphere, December 2009’searly full moon allowed us to end the old year– and start the New Year – under the light of asecond full moon, with a little extra attentionthrown in, courtesy of a partial lunar eclipseoccurring as well!

Always a rarity, this latest ‘Blue Moon’ waseven more so! While a ‘Blue Moon’ occurs onaverage every 2.7 years, the last time we had aNew Year’s Eve ‘Blue Moon’ was 20 years ago, back in 1990. It will be another 18 years (2028)before it occurs again, so if you somehowmissed this one, it’s a long wait until the next!

The less astronomically-inclined also know theterm through music and even cocktails. We’veall heard Elvis’ melancholy ballad “Blue Moon”or tapped our toe to Bill Monroe’s classic blue-grass hit “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” And comehappy hour, your barkeep might even offeryou a pint of “Blue Moon” beer or a flirty“Blue Moon” cocktail.

Retired? You’ve earned it – now spend it!MAYBE YOU’RE ALREADY RETIRED. Maybe you’re lookingforward to the next phase of your life. Either way, your goal isthe same – to enjoy every year of your retirement. And whynot! You’ve earned it. You’ve put away a retirement nest eggand you should spend it to truly live your retirement dreams.

But you also want to make sure that your retirement incomelasts for all your retirement years – that it will always be thereto sustain the lifestyle you want – and that takes some carefulretirement income planning.

Here are a few essential steps to a sustainable retirement in-come.

Know where your income will come fromThe three basic sources of retirement income are: • Government benefits, including: Old Age Security (OAS),

which would be ‘clawed back’ in increasing amounts ifyour personal net income exceeds a stated threshold; theCanada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP),which is intended to provide about 25 per cent of youraverage annual employment earnings; and the Guaran-teed Annual Income Supplement (GIS), which is a tax-free (income-tested) payment which is available to thosewho have little or no income beyond OAS.

• Private pension plans and group Registered RetirementSavings Plans (RRSPs).

• Personal savings – the crucial building blocks that helpprovide financial security through all your retirementyears.

Maximize your retirement pay cheque Identify your continuing costs and expenses in two streams –essential spending that can’t be reduced, and discretionaryspending that can be managed. Take into account the effectsof inflation, and the fact that you’ll likely need an income for20 years or more. Establish a mix of investments that will de-liver the right level of cash flow, and develop a customizedplan for withdrawing retirement income that will sustain

Be tax-efficient Your withdrawal plan should also allow youto take full advantage of all the tax benefitsavailable to you, such as the age and pensionincome credits, while avoiding OAS claw-backs. Other tax strategies can include split-ting income with your spouse, investing intax-advantaged mutual funds, making mini-mum withdrawals from investments heldwithin Registered Income Funds and otherfully taxable investments, and selecting non-registered investments that offer preferentialtax treatment, such as investments that areTax-Free Savings Accounts eligible.

If you’re worried that there might be a gapbetween your retirement expenses and in-come, if you want to investigate strategiesfor increasing your retirement income, or ifyou simply want the peace of mind thatyour retirement income will be sustainablefor all your retirement years, talk to yourprofessional advisor.

PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: Will smoking harm my computer?

ANSWER: Just for a moment I pictured your computer light-ing up a cigarette. Of course, that’s silly. The question is: willsecond-hand cigarette smoke harm a computer? Yes, it mostcertainly will to some degree.

Computers require cooling fans, heat sinks, and air vents to re-move heat produced by the CPU, power supply, and other in-ternal components. Cooling fans push accumulated hot airout while drawing cooler air into the computer case via intakevents. If your computer is located in a dusty, smoke-laden en-vironment, guess where all that dust and smoke will end up:inside your computer. The cool air pulled into the computer iscontaminated with soot particles. From my experience, awood-heated home with multiple smokers is the worst sce-nario. In this situation, the CPU heat sink and all the coolingvents get clogged up with brownish tar-nicotine gunk. Evenrotating fan blades become coated, off-balance, and noisy.Subject a computer to constant use by a smoker and it willvery quickly show signs of over-heating. An over-heating com-puter locks up. If you allow this computer to cool, you mightbe up and running, wondering what happened. Over-heat acomputer repeatedly and risk permanent damage.

The hard-disk within your computer stores all your preciousprograms, documents, pictures, music, and, most importantly, the Operating System. Smoke can seep into a hard-disk overtime, gumming up the read/write head, linkages, bearings, anddamaging the magnetic coating on the metal platters. This willresult in lost data and computer crashes.

Cigarette smoke coats keyboards, mice, display screens, andthe actual computer. Once this tar-nicotine coating has sea-soned, it’s difficult to disguise. The odour emitted by asmoker’s computer is very distinctive. Line up several comput-ers on a work-bench and its easy to pick out a smoker’s com-puter. In fact, computer repair-shops not equipped with fumehoods are choosing to turn away smoke-contaminated com-puters with a claim the smoke is a biohazard, an OccupationalHealth and Safety issue for employees.

Your warranty might be affected. Recently, several cases in-volving Apple computers were reported on the Internet. Heavysmokers turned in ailing Apple computers hoping to get re-pairs performed under warranty. Not a chance, said Apple.Apple’s stance regarding smoke damage might open the doorto other manufacturers denying warranty repairs.

Whether your computer is in a smoke-filled or smoke-free en-vironment, a computer by its very nature is inhaling. On a reg-ular basis check your computer internally for signs of cloggedair vents or clogged heat sinks. Use compressed air to clearbuildup. Also, wipe external surfaces, keyboards, mice, anddisplay screens with a proper cleaner.
