At a special meeting on Thursday, March 7th, the Board“with deep regret” reluctantly accepted the resignation ofBoard Chair Arthena Hecker. Ms. Hecker cited personalreasons for her decision to step down.

The Board voted to elect Treasurer Sheila Campbell as thenew Chair. Sheila was quick to acknowl-edge Arthena’s strong contribution toprotecting and enhancing our localhealth care.

A NEW FACE...continued from page 1

Upon being elected, Rod wasted no time in taking his seat atthe table and wading into the issues. “I’ve lived here all of mylife. I’ve always relied on this hospital [MMH] and I’ll workhard for it.” he asserted.

After welcoming its newest member, the Board quickly gotback to the business of our local healthcare, commissioningnew volunteer action committees focused on important proj-ects, including fundraising and moving forward with thelong-awaited MeadowLink assisted living centre.

With Dr. Guy Lupien now practicing here, to be followed inApril by the permanent ‘arrival’ of Dr. Albert Beller, theBoard’s biggest issue remains the upcoming administrativeagreements between Matthews Memorial Hospital and theThessalon Hospital with Blind River District Health Centre.New Board Chair Sheila quickly assures us that discussions todate have been very positive and everything is still proceedingwell.

The Island Clippings joins the MMHA Board in thankingArthena Hecker for her exemplary service to our community. We also offer a warm welcome to Rod Fremlin, who hasstepped up to join this dedicated, hard-working group at suchan important time in its long history. We’re sure that sittingin that chair at the table will be anything but dull!

Congratulations Sig! It’s Quads!SIGRID ROBINSON of Jocelyn Township is always a verybusy woman. Among several other things, she’s well known

for her delicious goat cheese, made from the milk of her very

own goat herd.

Last Saturday, things got even busier for Sig, as the population

of her herd took a big leap with the birth of ‘Quads’ – 4 kids

born to the same mother. And these kids are healthy and very

active, as we found out when trying to get them to hold still

long enough for even just one photo!

Although scientists are still trying to understand the ‘gene’

connection, it’s fairly normal for a goat doe to have twins,

triplets can be quite common but quaduplets (4 kids) and

quintuplets (five kids) are quite unusual.

Latest reports are that Mom and kids are all doing well but,

since Mom can only nurse two kids at a time, “Grandma” Sig

has to help out by bottle feeding sometimes. She’s cheerfully

taking it all in stride …so far. She tells us that another of her

does is about to deliver any day now!

2012ST. JOSEPH ISLANDREAL ESTATE REPORT

Sales of properties on the island increased fourteenpercent over the past year. Total value of 75 propertiessold in 2012 was $9.2 million compared to 49 propertiesin 2011 for a value of just under $7.9 million.

In 2012 sales included 24 waterfront properties, 26vacant land properties, 2 farms, 1 business and 1commercial property with 13 sales between 2 and 3hundred thousand and no sales above the $300,000 mark.

In 2011 the total number of sales was 49 including 18waterfront properties, 11 vacant land properties, 1 farm,2 commercial and 1multi-family property with 8 salesbetween 2 and 3 hundred thousand and 6 over $300,000.

Demand for larger high end properties was on the declinein 2012 with no sales recorded over $300,000 comparedto 6 in 2011. This indicates a trend toward more seasonaland economical types of properties as the reality of highergas prices and Canadian Dollar sets in.

Sales were slow in late fall which always seems to happenaround an American election, but sales picked up inDecember before the snow came. The weather has slowedthe market through the first part of the year with only 3residential and 2 vacant land sales.

Property values have leveled off and in some areas salesprices have eased. With mortgage rates remaining athistoric lows, more and more “baby boomers” continue toretire and look for lower cost housing and second proper-ties. This should make for an anticipated good spring andsummer market here on the island.
