“WEARING GLASSES” PORTRAIT HEADSHOTSPROJECT SPECS: Made with WACOM tablet, Manga Studio EX4, Photoshop CS5.1.
Since 2012, I’ve drawn a handful of portraits for a number of my friends as birthday gifts. It was only
until recently that I noticed a similar trend in some of the portraits. I gave some of these friends two
variations of their portrait: one with them wearing glasses and one without wearing them. As an
added touch, I applied a warm to cool colour gradient to each headshot as shading.

ILLUSTRATED MINDMAP (re: SCOTT McCLOUD’S MAKING COMICS)PROJECT SPECS: Made with Photoshop CS5, Wacom tablet.
Scott McCloud is one of my biggest inspirations. His theories on comics are thoughts that any
type of intellectual can apply to their daily life. The chapter on creating a narrative in comics—
which is illustrated above in the mindmap—discusses the multitude of things that can be involved
in a single set of panels. This mindmap is my attempt at breaking down his words into basic
elements from his argument.

ALPHABETIC LANDSCAPE, “HUMAN”PROJECT SPECS: Made with Marker paper, STAEDTLER pigment liners (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7).
Using linear perspective and hatching techniques, I made a comic/illustration that reflected common
aspects of a human. Traits that were depicted included vice, knowledge, language and emotion. A
comic format was used to illustrate the traits as a story.

CHARACTER DESIGN: MADISON “MADDY” McGEEPROJECT SPECS: Made with Photoshop CS5, Wacom tablet.
Creating Maddy (a science-fiction-based character for a comic I co-create) was my first experience in
designing artificial limbs for a character. Not only was this good practice in illustrating human
anatomy, but it had me think about the practicality of mechanical design. I thought about children’s
building kits and action figures and came up with these robotic limbs. The idea was to create a design
where anyone could look at it and try to build these limbs like a piece of IKEA furniture.
