Kindergarten

Kindergarten was really charged up with Turbo Taylor and his team for the Boosterthon Fun Run. The students worked hard to run their laps to earn money for UGE. It was a fun day! A huge thanks to everyone for your support.

In November, kindergarten learned about Veteran’s Day and the first Thanksgiving. We learned about how things were very different long ago. We had a great time at our Thanksgiving Feast where we dressed in Pilgrims and Native American costumes. We have also been working hard on our writing and even had some students featured in the Henry Herald with their Thanksgiving stories.

December is really fun in kindergarten and we have a lot going on! We will be reading many different versions of the Gingerbread Man and using our five senses to have some holiday fun. Next, we will take off for a wild ride when we study Christmas traditions Around the World. The month will end with our Holiday Party on December 19th. Be looking for more information to come home about this. We are looking forward to a nice winter break and a great 2015!

First Grade

First grade enjoyed learning about plants and animals at Southern Belle Farm! Thank you to all of the chaperones who helped us tremendously. A fun day was had by all!

We are continuing to learn about our city, county, state, and nation. These concepts are often hard to grasp. Please work on them at home as well.

We had great participation in our Boosterthon Fundraiser! Thank you so much for all of the contributions! You really helped our school!

Remember to read, read, read!!!

Second Grade

We are busy, busy in second grade this month! We are beginning our project based learning unit on Georgia’s first people. Students are researching Creek and Cherokee Native American ways compared to their lives today. The students will be choosing a final project to showcase their research. In math, we are continuing to learn addition and subtraction within 1,000. We had a great time participating in the fun run. Students worked very hard to obtain pledges; please help them collect these sponsorships! We have an upcoming “in school” field trip. More details to follow. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Third Grade

Third graders are learning about rocks, minerals, fossils, and soils. The students enjoyed their cave mining experience looking for precious gems with our visit from Diamond Del. In social studies, we are learning about important contributions to society from people like Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas. Students are working diligently on writing in all content areas to practice expanding on their ideas by Restating the question (to show they understand what is being asked), Answering the question, Citing one or more examples, and Explaining/Extending/Elaborating on their response. This forms the ‘RACE’ acronym (which your child should be able to tell you about). Classes are using this type of response system to become more detailed and thorough writers when responding to questions. This skill will be an invaluable tool to them as they need to explain their thinking on the new GA Milestones test. We use this model to explain math strategies and give evidence to support their answers to questions in reading, science, and social studies. During math instruction, students are problem solving using multiplication and division. You can support this at home is by practicing math facts nightly with your child, visiting the website www.multiplication.com for extra practice, use First in Math, and by asking students a variety of questions that relate to multiplication and/or division make it meaningful to them. For example, use word problems such as, we are having pizza tonight for dinner. There are only 8 slices of pizza. How many pieces can each family member get if we have 4 people in our family? How many pizzas should we order? Do we need more?.

Third grade is sponsoring our annual “Breakfast for Dinner with Santa” on December 11th from 5:30-7:30 P.M. Please look for a breakfast for dinner form coming home soon. All breakfast for dinners are pre-ordered, so get your reservation in early! During this event, we will have a variety of activities for students to enjoy as well as pictures with Santa. A separate form to pre-order tickets for activities will coming home too. This year’s Santa Shop will begin on December 8th and continue for the rest of week. Students will have opportunities to purchase gifts for friends, pets, and family members. On Thursday, December 11th, the Santa Shop will be open from 5:30-7:30 P.M. We will be needing volunteers for the “Breakfast for Dinner with Santa”. We may call on parents to help set up, clean up, and/or work a reindeer game. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact your child’s teach-er. Thanks in advance for making this another successful 3rd grade fundraiser!

FOURTH GRADE

It’s getting chilly outside, but things are warming up in the fourth grade. Students are really popping in class as they plow through multiplication and division. Learning about life in Colonial American and the thirteen colonies has been exciting, but it is time to switch over to science and explore space, the planets, stars, and moons.

Students continue to use an assortment of apps, platforms, and programs to learn and show what they are learning. Some communicate through Edmodo, many show what they know with Socratic quizzes, and there are classes now getting instant feedback from ZipGrade. Students love watching flipped lessons from Study Jams, Learn Zillion, and Brain Pop.

Don’t forget that it is time for the third Rock Eagle payment if your child is taking advantage of the payment plan. $20.00 is due by the last school day of November (Nov. 21) for every student AND chaperone that will be attending on March 19-20.

And finally, a great big shout out to every student, parent, family member, and friend that participated in our Boosterthon. What a great time the students had collecting pledges, earning prizes, and running their laps. It was amazing to see all of the support and encouragement.

Fifth Grade

The past few weeks have been busy ones for fifth grade. The students are continuing to master the new Common Core standards. Multicellular organisms have been the topic of discussion in science. The students have learned about the five kingdoms and animal classification. In social studies they have been working on PBL projects about the turn of the century. The students continue to make progress in the ALEKS math program. One student has already completed the 266 topics needed to complete fifth grade ALEKS curriculum. The students are continuing to hone their writing skills using the program My Access which gives the students instant feedback and help with their individual writing needs. The fifth grade has also been raising money for a memorial rose garden for their classmate that passed away recently. The fifth grade teachers want to thank all the parents for their help and support.

Gardening in the Grove

In the garden club, we mostly do a lot of stuff like we plant, weed, water, and most of all we have FUN!!!! On our last garden club meeting we dug out red potatoes and we didn’t even know we were going to! We were pulling up beans too, because they don’t last in the winter. We will cook the beans and eat them. Also, at the last garden club meeting we went and picked some eggplant, and we fried the eggplant. We also picked some peppers that we will make into sweet green pepper jam. In addition, we made sweet pepper jelly with some red peppers, apple cider vinegar, and sugar. We love garden club because of all the fun activities we do. Garden club is FUN!!!!
