Centralia will have its Broadway debut.The local improv group is performing at

Inwood Art Works Nov. 3rd.Centralia often performs at People’s

Improv Theater, but the pop up gallery at 4857 Broadway is an entirely new venue for the group.

“We don’t know how we are going to be affected by it,” said Kevin Scott. “Because we are improvisational, we design our show based on the moment—how we feel right now, in Inwood, in an art gallery, next to a sneaker store.”

Scott and another member, Matt Higgins, both live in Inwood. They met years ago, working at Sesame Place. “We were performers—doing kind of what we do now—but that was for kids. Now we do it for grownups.”

Northern Manhattanites know Higgins from UP Theater Company and performances in K Comma Joseph and Broad Channel. Before that, Higgins studied acting and did stand up in Philadelphia. Scott followed him into stand up and later joined Chicago’s Second City.

When Scott eventually moved to Manhattan, he quickly ran into Higgins on the street. They understood it was a sign they should be working together.

Their original group was called “Burn Manhattan.” They liked the name’s fi ery feel. They specialized in long form improvisation.

A lot of improv is based on short skits and, when it works, it’s funny because it’s spontaneous and surprising. More than just a

collection of skits, long form attempts a higher goal.

“Because you have more time to be theatrical, long form improvisation is less of a comedy experience and more of a theatrical experience,” Scott said.

Audiences watch the performers in process of creation. “The product is the process, so you can use that process for any goal,” Scott said. “You’re never going to improvise something

like a Eugene O’Neill play, but there’s no reason you can’t attempt it.”

He added that bad improvised drama can veer into self-serving and melodramatic territory. They keep that in check by not taking it too seriously.

“We are also aware of what we are doing is a little bit of a stunt. We don’t hide that we are improvising,” he said.

Like Higgins and Scott, member Jay Rhoderick is from Pennsylvania. He founded the Pig Iron Company, a Philadelphia regional theater.

Alcántara announced the funding on October 23 during a visit to the P.S. 8 Luis Belliard School in Washington Heights, after which students and guests enjoyed a bagel breakfast.

In addition to community service opportunities, the program offers participants academic guidance, mentoring, anti-bullying training and trips to Broadway shows, restaurants and museums.

“Hopefully these students will be exposed to extracurricular activities that they normally don’t do,” said Alcántara.

“They will be able to attend Broadway shows, [and participate in] all these programs they’re probably not used to,” she added. “These are the things that we hope to achieve, and motivate students to continue doing well in school.”

“Project BOOST has been a really special part of our school community,” explained Washington Hernández, Principal of P.S. 8, which is located on West 167th Street. “Last year, the kids collected 250 pounds of food for the hungry, learned their manners

for fi ne dining, and went to the Museum of Mathematics. These experiences open their eyes to the wider world and without them, their education would lose an essential element. I am very glad that Project BOOST will be able to continue and expand its operations at my school.”

Carl Vinci, Director of Student Support Services at CEI, said Project BOOST is now offered at 120 schools citywide, including schools for special needs and deaf children. Last year, the program sent 7,000 New York City children to Broadway shows, he said.

“It’s all about helping kids,” remarked Vinci.

He said that one program aspect is to

teach children proper formal etiquette, such as table manners, how to shake hands and how to hold forth in conversation.

“We take them to a restaurant [and] they’re dressed up,” Vinci said. “They learn how to sit, how to use utensils ― cultural keys that these kids need and love.”

At P.S. 8, fourth and fi fth graders are eligible to participate in Project BOOST.

Also in attendance was District 6 School Superintendent Manuel Ramírez.

I show her my Human Resources Administration ID. “We are talking to tenants about their rights,” I say in Spanish. “Are you having issues with repairs or with your landlord? I can help you get the city services you need.”

On August 11, New York City became the fi rst in the nation to guarantee legal representation to low-income New Yorkers in housing court. The next challenge is making sure every vulnerable tenant knows they have support to fi ght their eviction and can stay in their home.

The single mother of three, who lives in a rent-regulated apartment in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx, needs help. Her apartment has leaks, chipped paint and she is panicked that her family will wind up in a homeless shelter. She just received an eviction notice. I take notes on my iPad. I’ll call her back later that day to connect her to the legal help she needs, giving her my business card to stay in touch and let others know help is available.

The city has started to make house calls. It’s called the Public Engagement Unit and it’s a program like no other in the nation.

She is just one of hundreds of thousands of tenants that the Public Engagement Unit has reached out to and the over 12,000 tenants they have helped remain in their homes.

We do not wait for the disconnected from government to come to the city for help.

They’re wiping the slate clean.The city’s three library systems have

announced a fi ne forgiveness program that will allow young people with blocked libraries cards to resume borrowing books.

Starting October 19, all children 17 and under have had their library fi nes automatically wiped out, and blocks on their library cards lifted.

Made possible by a gift from The JPB Foundation, the one-time amnesty will aid more than 161,000 kids citywide -- about 20 percent of youth library card holders -- who had previously lost their borrowing privileges due to unpaid fi nes.

Students ages 18 and up can also have their fi nes cleared in person at library branches through November 2.

“We do not discriminate against those who cannot afford to pay fi nes,” said New York Public Library (NYPL) President Tony Marx. “And that is particularly true because we know that most of those blocked library cards were in the poorest neighborhoods of New York.”

Countee Cullen library in Harlem, Marx said he has heard countless stories of families facing hardships and not being able to use their library cards, which become blocked once users have accumulated $15 in fi nes.

“We need everyone to be able to do their homework, to be able to do their research, to be able to learn,” Marx said.

Library offi cials explained that once a card is blocked, it is often diffi cult for some low-income families to catch up with paying fi nes. In the Brooklyn Public Library system, where 42 percent of blocked youth cards are located in the poorest neighborhoods, only eight percent of blocked cards ever become unblocked, said Brooklyn Public Library President Linda Johnson.

At the Countee Cullen branch, nearly 40 percent of library users report incomes under $25,000 and about 30 percent of the branch’s youth cards were blocked.

“It’s heartbreaking to tell a child they can’t check out books because they owe too much money,” said Countee Cullen Branch Manager Nicole Nelson.

Deputy Mayor Richard Buery said the city was working to reduce

inequality and economic barriers that affect residents’ quality of life.

“I have been beaten up to the point where I had to have multiple stitches in my face,” he stated.

Fuller, together with other operators and

public transportation advocates have joined together to call for all-door boarding on every Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus line, saying it would speed bus service and improve driver safety.

At a rally outside of MTA headquarters on October 19, advocates said that letting passengers enter through any door would make boarding more effi cient and reduce curbside time. They pointed out that other major cities such as San Francisco, Seattle and London have implemented all-door boarding to great success.

“Right now, the way that we board our buses in New York City is outdated,” said Tabitha Decker, Deputy Executive Director of advocacy group TransitCenter. “Right now, our buses spend 22 percent of their time just idling at the bus stop, while people board.”

“We know all-door boarding works because it works in other cities,” said Nick Sifuentes, Executive Director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

Currently, the MTA only allows all-door boarding on 13 Select Bus Service (SBS) lines, where riders pay their fares at curbside boxes prior to boarding. Members of the transit workers’ union called for the removal of fare boxes

from all buses, saying drivers faced frequent confrontations with passengers.

“First of all, it’s going to move buses more effi ciently, and our bus operators are not going to have to worry about arguing with passengers, getting spit on, getting assaulted, getting coffee thrown on them,” said Tony Utano, the newly installed President of Transit Workers Union (TWU) Local 100. “Those days have got to be over with. Our people got to come to work and be able to drive these buses in a safe manner.”

Fuller said the responsibility of monitoring the fare box creates tension for drivers and carries the potential for confl ict.

“I am for concentrating on the main reason for being behind the wheel, which is to transport people in a safe manner,” said Fuller,

The rally came as the MTA prepared to vote on a new fare payment system to replace the MetroCard. The agency is reportedly planning to award a contract for app-based technology that would allow riders to pay by tapping their phones on the bus.

“It’s actually an opportunity for us to revolutionize the way we use transit in this city,” remarked Sifuentes, who said the city could implement contactless fare payment or allow busriders to pay with bank cards. “All these kinds of technologies are possible, but

Strike Sims down.A coalition of neighborhood activists

and elected offi cials has intensifi ed its campaign to get the city to remove a Central Park statue of Dr. James Marion Sims, a white Southern doctor who performed experimental surgeries on enslaved black women.

Considered the “father of modern gynecology,” Sims was known for achieving many of his medical discoveries by conducting surgeries on the enslaved women without anesthesia or consent.

The coalition, which consists of women’s rights advocates, East Harlem Community

Board members, medical students and city offi cials, rallied in front of the statue on October 19 to ask the city’s recently formed Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art, Monuments and Markers to tear down the statue, located on Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street.

It was originally dedicated in Bryant Park and brought uptown in 1934 to be placed across from the Academy of Medicine, of which Sims was a member.

Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed the commission in September to conduct a 90-day review of potentially offensive statues and monuments throughout the city.

The 18-member commission is headed by Tom Finkelpearl, the Commissioner of the

Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), and Darren Walker, the President of the Ford Foundation.

Though the commission has not yet revealed the memorials they are considering, Community Board 11 Chair Diane Collier said at the rally that the Sims statue should be “at the top of the list” for removal.

“Clearly, it is offensive to the community of

East Harlem, for the historically recorded atrocities to women of color, and as far as I’m concerned, women as a whole,” said Collier.

Councilmember Helen Rosenthal, Co-Chair of the Council’s Women’s Caucus, said Sims’ medical breakthroughs “and the way in which [he] achieved them, do not warrant the reverence that this monument offers.”

Rosenthal suggested that the city could replace the statue with a memorial to the black women Sims experimented on, noting that records indicate that one of the enslaved women underwent more than 30 surgeries.

“If anybody should be honored here, it should be the women who made Sims’

breakthroughs possible,” Rosenthal stated. “They were the true heroines and these experimental surgeries made the survival of so many other women possible going forward.”

Deputy Manhattan Borough President Matthew Washington, a native of East Harlem, noted that neighborhood residents have been calling for the statue’s removal since 2010. Calling it “a blight on the community,” Washington said the statue honors “somebody who represents hatred, who stands for opposition to women, who did not care to humanize people who deserve to be humanized.”

The window in the living room blew out during the storm.Her home was soon deluged with a torrent

of rain and wind – and she and her infant were trapped inside while Hurricane Maria battered her hometown of Guaynabo in northern Puerto Rico.

“I hid in the building hallway with my baby for hours,” recalled Krystal Rodríguez.

The young mother arrived in New York on October 10 with her 9-month-old son, after her apartment building was damaged by the hurricane.

Rodríguez said staying in Puerto Rico became too diffi cult, especially with a young child. “The lines for food were so long,” she remarked.

“You’d wait for fi ve hours just to get some bread and other basic things, and they only give you a little at a time.”

Rodríguez is staying in the city with

her aunt, Theresa Nieves, but said the living arrangement is only temporary.

“The building doesn’t know she’s there,” said Nieves. “I’m doing what I need to do. I can’t put her out on the street, but eventually she’ll need somewhere else to go.”

Onsite agencies include the Department of Health, Department of Social Services, Department for the Aging and Department of Education. In addition, the American Red Cross of Greater New York is on hand to provide disaster relief management and supplies, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is distributing pet supplies and New York Disaster Interfaith Services is providing spiritual care.

The fourth member of the group Patrick McCartney was also at Second City. His class included Tina Fey and Amy Pohler. He later worked with the Upright Citizens Brigade (UBC).

While the group had other members come and go, these four have been together for several years. All have studied acting and worked in theater, which gives them a deeper well to draw from. “You can pull from Pirandello, Bertolt Brecht or August Wilson,” Scott said. “And if you’re with a team of people who all share that experience, you can go there.”

That shared theatrical vocabulary lets them go deeper and farther than most short-form improv groups. The team is also tight from having worked together for a long time. “I know what delights Matt, I know

what’s going to make Jay laugh, and so I can go there for them much quicker,” said Scott.

The group got its current name after Higgins showed them a 2002 New York Times article about an almost completely abandoned Pennsylvania mining town. The fi re started more than 50 years ago, and spread subterraneously through hundreds of acres of anthracite veins under Centralia, emitting noxious fumes and occasional fl ames. It continues burning to this day. Nearly everyone left long ago, but a handful of people remain. The article quoted one resident, “There are stayers and there are goers in life, and we are the stayers.”

Higgins found nobility in the idea that even though your town is on fi re, you would stay behind and look after it. He told his fellow players, “We are the stayers.”

To prevent contributing to the landfi ll, consider treats or candy with the least amount of packaging, or you could use the treats or

Hoy en día, la fi esta se ha convertido en una celebración que se caracteriza por actividades adaptados a los niños, como disfraces, pedir dulce o truco y convertir calabazas en lámparas.

Aun así, Halloween puede ser una temporada muy derrochadora si busca seguir la ruta tradicional centrada en el consumo. “This place that I had grown up in, [in] the children’s room learning how to read, I stopped going to for an extended period of time,” Van Bramer said. “The truth is, that’s what happens when young people are forced to avoid the library out of shame and other reasons, because they owe money and their borrowing privileges have been suspended. We never want that to happen.”

It is estimated that the three library

systems are forgiving about $2.25 million in collected fi nes, NYPL offi cials said. Revenue from fi nes is used for library operations, including staff, books and programming.

After the one-time amnesty, fi nes will begin accruing again on any items due after October 19.

Marx said libraries in all fi ve boroughs will host special events welcoming families and children back to the library, and encouraged them to return any overdue books still in their possession.

“Let’s say today to all our kids and teens, come back. All is forgiven,” stated Marx. “We need everyone reading.”
