Hurley Auxiliary Celebrates 57th Birthday

Hurley Medical Center Auxiliary members celebrated the organization’s 57th birthday on February 18, 2014. During 2013, the group’s 159 members donated a total of 36,000 hours of volunteer work in their 19 separate services. The Auxiliary presented a check for $100,000 to Melany Gavlic, President and CEO, for their commitment to the Outpatient Clinic Renovation. The money was raised from sales in the Medical Center gift shop and patient hospitality cart and by other fundraising events and activities. Since 1956, the Auxiliary has donated over $3.8 million for needed programs and equipment.

Two volunteers were recognized for performing over 20,000 hours. Evertt Skeel has volunteered more than 23,500 since 1998. Barbara Arndt has served over 20,000 hours since 1969. Sixteen other members have volunteered more than 5,000 hours of service each. They are: Barbara Tankersley, Eleanor Poole, Sheila Minarik, Janice Spinney, Ruth Spomer, Lola Manner, Patricia Foor, Nancy Viele, Bonnie Pace, Garry Viele, Marilyn Orban, Josephine Haney, Nellie Bacon, Muriel Skeel, Jean Wooten and Francesca Hinojosa. Twenty other members were recognized for volunteering over 1,000 hours. They are: Alanna Tess, Florastean Greer, Jeanne Aumaugher, Dollie Starling, Doris Dimock, Jessie Adams, Karen McCann, Kathleen Hayes, Tani Konzer, Betty Piotracyk, Genevieve Bundy, Deloris Bell, Shirley Miller, Elaine Olmstead, Peggy Soth, Joanne Webster, Barbara Hammonds, Jan Moore, Pama Holmblade and Karen Florida.

Last year, Hurley’s 500 volunteers donated over 80,000 hours of service to the Hurley Medical Center. The Coordinator of Pastoral Care and On-Call Chaplains donated 6,200 hours of service last year. They ensure 24 hour, 7 days a week spiritual support for Hurley patients, family, and staff. Hurley also started a new volunteer program this year “Compassionate Care” with a goal of providing comfort and support to patients and their families. Approximately 200 high school students explore health careers each year by volunteering their time through the Health Career Volunteer Program and summer Red Cross youth program. Hurley employees contributed their time to help raise funds for worthwhile programs such as Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and to coordinate community events for African American Heritage Month. Hurley receives additional volunteer support from Foster Grandparents through the Family Service Agency, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and the AARP Foundation. These volunteers provide help in departments and offices throughout the hospital.

Hurley Auxiliary presented a check for $100,000 for their commitment

to the Outpatient Clinic renovation.

FOUNDATION NEWSHealthcare Career Day

Hurley Medical Center is hosting a “Healthcare Career Day” for high school students on April 14, 2014. Students must be at least 15 years old and in grades 10-12. Space is limited, so email [email protected] as soon as possible to complete an online registration form. Future “Healthcare Career Days” for high school students will be held from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on May 12, 2014 and June 9, 2014. Healthcare Career Days at Hurley are sponsored by the Genesee County Medical Society Alliance, and Hurley’s Human Resources Department, Marketing Department, and Volunteer Services. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Hasselbach, Volunteer Director at 810. 262.9152.

Jean Wooten: VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Jean Wooten will be recognized at the Auxiliary luncheon on April 15. Jean is one of the pillars of Hurley’s Auxiliary. She started volunteering at Hurley in 1999 and to date has volunteered over 6,000 hours. During her

14 years of volunteering, she has volunteered consistently in the Surgical Lounge and fills in for volunteers who are on vacation or sick. As a Surgical Lounge volunteer, she keeps families informed while their loved one is in surgery and fulfills needs of waiting families. Prior to coming to Hurley, Jean volunteered with United Way and worked with the clients at the YWCA Safe House.

Jean is an example of “JUST DO IT!” She is the first person to fill-in for volunteers when they are ill and on vacation. It is not uncommon for her to volunteer 2-3 days during the week if needed, with many of the shifts starting as early as 6 a.m. Jean has overseen the Auxiliary’s popular bake sale for many years, coordinated the Holiday Fair, worked at fundraisers, planned many Auxiliary luncheons, and has picked up volunteers who are no longer able to drive and takes them to Auxiliary luncheons.

Jean makes everyone feel important and always remains calm and easygoing. She is friendly and goes out of her way for everyone without asking for anything in return. Thank you, Jean, for all you do to for Hurley!

Hurley Medical Center Works to Give More Babies a Healthy Start In Life Hurley Medical Center has been working with the March of Dimes to reduce the number of elective inductions and cesearean deliveries performed before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy. This will give more babies a healthy start in life, the March of Dimes says. “We’re proud of our expert team of physicians and nurses who recognized this issue in our community and put in place policies to avoid scheduling elective inductions or caesarean deliveries before 39 weeks of pregnancy, except when medically necessary,” said Dr. Larry Young, Medical Director for Obstetrics-Gynecology, Hurley Medical Center.

“Reducing unnecessary early deliveries at Hurley Medical Center means that more babies stayed in the womb longer, which is so vital for their growth and development,” says Renay Gagleard, MSN, MHSA, RNBC, Women and Children’s Service Line Administrator at Hurley Medical Center and State Chapter Chair, March of Dimes. “Overall, this project saw a decrease in the proportion of babies born at 37 and 38 weeks and a corresponding increase in the 39-41 week range during the one-year period studied.”

Hurley Medical Center implemented a toolkit called “Elimination of Non-medically Indicated (Elective) Deliveries before 39 Weeks Gestational Age” to guide changes in early term delivery practices. The toolkit was developed in partnership with the March of Dimes, the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative and the California Maternal Child and Adolescent Division within the California Department of Public Health. It can be downloaded free from the Prematurity Prevention Resource Center at prematurityprevention.org.

ICD -10 DelayOn March 31, 2014, the U.S. Senate voted 64-35 to pass a House-approved measure (HR 4302) to extend the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) while at the same time delaying the implementation of ICD-10. The following day, April 1, 2014, President Barack Obama signed into law the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014. The President’s signature on the bill prevents a scheduled 24-percent cut to Medicare physician payments, which would have gone into effect April 1, 2014. This new legislation also delays the implementation date for ICD-10 for at least one year, to October 2015. This marked the third time action taken by the president delayed the nation’s healthcare system’s attempts to adopt ICD-10.

The measure states, “The Secretary of Health and Human Service may not, prior to Oct. 1, 2015, adopt ICD-10 code sets as the standard for codes sets.” It also cites sections in the Social Security Act and the Code of Federal Regulations, which contain the secretary’s authority to mandate the new code sets.

U.S. health care organizations now have more time to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets to accommodate codes for new diseases and procedures. There are mixed emotions about the delay. While it does allow additional time for preparation, it also poses a significant financial and resource impact on entities that were heavily invested in the transition.
