1 “Smooth Sailing” International Student Orientation (ISO) Welcome! Below is the ISO schedule and description for Saturday and Sunday (Aug 25&26). 1. For the first day, Saturday Aug 25, please come to the Gymnasium Building 190, there will be signs on campus guiding you to the gym, or familiarize yourself with campus map. 2. Register at the Gym and receive orientation package. 3. Attend mandatory “Stay Healthy, Stay Safe” session. 4. The orientation is in conference style, choose your session. Your selection should include academic, health and wellness, and outdoor activities for Saturday and Sunday. Make sure to attend your program session. Please note some active sessions requires comfortable clothing and footwear. 5. For Lunch, you will be divided into two groups. You will be assigned a colored name badge upon registering. 6. Submission of Study Permits and Official Transcripts: a. Avoid line-ups at orientation! “Smooth Sailing” International Student Orientation (ISO)

Welcome! Below is the ISO schedule and description for Saturday and Sunday (Aug 25&26).

1. For the first day, Saturday Aug 25, please come to the Gymnasium Building 190, there

will be signs on campus guiding you to the gym, or familiarize yourself with campus

map.

2. Register at the Gym and receive orientation package.

3. Attend mandatory “Stay Healthy, Stay Safe” session.

4. The orientation is in conference style, choose your session. Your selection should

include academic, health and wellness, and outdoor activities for Saturday and Sunday.

Make sure to attend your program session. Please note some active sessions requires

comfortable clothing and footwear.

5. For Lunch, you will be divided into two groups. You will be assigned a colored name

badge upon registering.

6. Submission of Study Permits and Official Transcripts:

a. Avoid line-ups at orientation! Take a photo of your Study Permit and email it to

[email protected] a clear scan or picture (PDF or JPEG) of your Study

Permit. Include your full name and VIU student number in subject line.

b. During orientation, you can submit study permit and / or original transcripts in

Building 255- Second floor on Saturday from 12-4pm, and on Sunday from 11-

1pm.

7. For sessions’ description, go to page 10.

8. Session are 50 min, you will have ample time to walk to the following session.

Academic Information to Support your Success in First Year

The session will focus on undergraduate academic regulations that are sensitive, time dependent, and require action. We will discuss supporting services, tools, and how to find this information. It is also an opportunity to meet other students and listen to their questions and concerns. Are you ready to start the best year of your life?

Bachelor of Arts, Learn about Majors and Minors Learn about the benefits of Bachelor of Arts Degree. The versatile majors and minors offered at VIU and how they can work out together to help you achieve your potentials.

Bachelor of Arts Sociology Department

This session is of interest to BA students. It will provide general information about the degree and specifically “Sociology” as a major or a minor.

Bachelor of Business Administration Program, Meet Your Program Advisor

At the BBA orientation session you will get important information about how and when to meet with your academic advisor; learn about the BBA major and minor options; know when you can declare your majors or minors; and find out about VIU’s Goal Planning System which will help you plan your degree. Also, you will learn what to do if you have received a prerequisite warning or you are on a waitlist for a course.

Building Your Story in Canada and at VIU. Theme: Connect, Engage, Discover

The Co-Curricular Record (CCR) provides a centralized database of activities that lets students easily search for opportunities to develop their interests, self-developed learning goals, and career aspirations by connecting classroom learning to experiences outside the classroom.

Canada: More than Hockey and Snow Learn more about Canadian culture, including some do’s and do not’s and strategies for success in adjusting to your life in a new culture. Hear from current VIU students and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about Canadian culture.

Computer Accounts and VIULearn During this session you will get hand-on practice using technologies at VIU. We will set up your computer account, and show you how to access and get help with the online learning system, called VIULearn.

Dental Hygiene Program, Meet Your Co-Chair Meet your Degree Program Co-Chair, learn about program, and have the opportunity to ask in depth questions

Dollars and Sense: Budgeting, Banking, Scholarships, and More

Join us for this fun and informative session where you will gain new information and useful tips on money matters, including some suggestions for how to make your money go further while at VIU. In this session you will learn more about budgeting, banking, fee deadlines, payment methods, bursaries / scholarships, and financial aid.

Food and Shopping on a Budget This session will provide you with some constructive ways to eat healthy and shop on a budget through interactive activities. We will provide some recipes on easy to prepare and freeze foods for later, during those busy days, and exam times. How or what to shop for in bulk, where to buy, and ways to stretch the food budget.

Go Where Google Can't Go! (Yes, it's a Library Tour!)

Because you're a VIU student, you have access through the Library to millions of information resources that the Google or Baidu search engines can't access. Join one of the VIU librarians for a tour of the library. Learn about how to access information and a great place to study on campus!

Helping Students Succeed: International Academic Support (IAS)

Team members from International Academic Support (IAS) will introduce our free on-campus tutoring service for international students. International students find us to be an invaluable resource for receiving help with understanding assignments, doing academic research, and putting ideas into writing, only to name a few. We will also review academic and classroom expectations in a Canadian university. Our goal is to help get you off to a strong start. Come and learn how we can support you along your journey at VIU.

Homestay Orientation Homestay is designed to promote friendship, language learning, and provide an opportunity for cultural exchange between you and a Canadian

Family. Living in a homestay can be an amazing experience but can differ from home to home and student to student. This interactive session will help you to prepare to make the most out of your homestay experience, navigate challenges, identify supports available, and build new skills. This session is required for all students who are registered in VIU’s Homestay programs.

Hospitality Program, Meet Your Program Advisor Meet your Degree Advisor/Program Chair, learn about your program, and have the opportunity to ask in depth questions.

How to Thrive at VIU: Tips from a Professor & Wildly Successful International Students

Do you want to survive or thrive in your time at VIU? Come to this session to hear about professor expectations and gain insights from international students who have achieved tremendous results in their programs. Learn how to interpret a course outline, how to juggle many assignments, and all about the resources that will help you wildly succeed at VIU

Living and Finding a Place to Live Off Campus Feeling lost and unsure of what to do? Have you been searching for a place to live without much luck? In this session we will look at the dos and don’ts of apartment hunting, temporary accommodation choices and options, and the rules of tenancy. In Nanaimo’s low rental market we can provide you some tips and resources to help you make informed choices.

Mindful Walking Tour Join counsellor Art Phipps for a tour of some of the beautiful natural spaces on campus. Along the way he will guide you in some relaxing and exciting mindfulness activities to help you connect to the natural side of the campus and rejuvenate you. If you are feeling tired, in need of a break or want to learn more about how nature can be a resource for you on campus join him for this workshop.

Navigating Immigration Rules In Canada: Studying Vs Working

This information session will explain to international students’ importance of visa, study permit and interprets the rules of working in BC. As well as international student rights and responsibilities in education institution and workplace. Please bring a Wi-Fi enabled device.

Ultimate Frisbee For this activity we will be having a fun game of ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate is a non-contact team sport played with a disc. No prior experience is required as instruction will be given, and we will be encouraging and accepting of all abilities! The game involves running up a field (or walking is fine too), catching a Frisbee, and then passing it on (no running solo with the Frisbee) to a teammate to an end zone in order to score.
