Molloy 2011-2012 Annual Report

Dear Stanners,

As we close the chapter to our school year, it gives us a moment to reflect upon all that has happened in the life of Archbishop Molloy High School. More than a hurricane, the aftermath of what is now known as “Superstorm Sandy” wended its way into the hearts, minds - and pockets - of generous Stanners, who demonstrated extraordinary acts of kindness to help with relief efforts both here at Molloy and the com-munities we live in.

We still mourn the loss of two beloved and irreplaceable institutions in the passing of Brother Francis Regis and Mr. Jack Curran, whose selfless commitment to the students and alumni embodied the very mission of Molloy. We also say goodbye to our graduating Class of 2013 and welcome them as our newest group of alumni. Through all of these challenging and transformational moments at Molloy, our Stanner Family came together time and time again to help one another. This invisible bond of kinship gives our alma mater the strength, the ability, and the courage to forge ahead and continue to be the great and special place we all cherish deeply.

We have given a name to our Annual Report. It is called Sed Vitae. It is only appropriate this inspiration was provided by fellow alum, Richard Walker ‘81, that what definse a Stanner is what we do “for life” in service to one another. This report is the ledger of the love, support, and hopes that you - our Stanner Community - provided to Molloy to ensure the traditions, values, ideals, and Marist Mission endure and flourish for the next generation of Stanners. These pages show how each of us play a critical role in one another’s personal life, and the life of Molloy.

With such a challenging year behind us, we hope all of you take time and enjoy the summer months. While many take a well deserved rest, Molloy begins to prepare for its 122nd year of excellence in education. New students, new classes, new teams, new captains, new college expectations, new challenges...

All new - except when you really get down to it, it’s still Molloy and we will always have a 6 day schedule. We hope to give you a glimpse of what typically happens around here once the halls of Stanner High be-come quieter in June and the school prepares for a new year in three months’ time. It is a big capital proj-ect, to be honest. When you look and wonder where your Annual Fund dollars go, consider that more than a few end up funding a summertime punch list designed to keep the campus maintained and functional and alive and ready to go in the fall. Those are crucial dollars well spent.

We will also give you a report on...

... our Academic & Named Scholarships which annually provides over $580,000 in financial awards...

...highlight the hub of activity from Class Reunions, alumni events...

...the impact of your giving to our Storm Recovery Fund... and

...finally, we present our Annual Report for the fiscal year 2011-12.

On behalf of the Marist Brothers, President, Principal, Administration, Faculty, and Students, please accept our sincerest thanks to the legions of Stanner alumni/ae, parents, grandparents, friends and benefactors who have helped the school reach its Annual Fund goals, so vital to Molloy’s ability to lead and plant the seeds of hope for the future leaders of tomorrow.

Deepest Thanks,

Craig M. Katinas ‘93Alumni Development Director

Capital Renewal—The “Honey-Do” ListSummer at Archbishop Molloy High School is all about facility upgrades, deferred maintenance, and major repairs.

By Craig Katinas & Stephan Audrin

Capital improvement is one of those concepts that drive development officers into high gear. Visions of excavators, cement trucks, labyrinths of steel, bobbing hard hats and chain link presage shiny new facilities that rise like a New York City skyscraper out of dollars assiduously raised, every one of which has a name attached and a story to tell…

Unfortunately, not all capital improvement bears so lofty a description. In time, buildings leak, systems fail, equipment becomes obsolete, and it all needs to be fixed, addressed or replaced with the very same dol-lars, only in those cases the dollars are even harder to raise and not nearly as fun to spend. Every summer, Archbishop Molloy High School’s Capital Renewal items, earmarked for deferred mainte-nance and pressing repairs, gets a major workout. In running terms it’s a marathon—but the results speak for themselves and it is important that the story be told because the operation of the school hinges on it.

Those who own a home, condo, or apartment know firsthand that once one project is accomplished ten more take its place. With an infrastructure over 50 years old that is used intensely throughout the year, Molloy’s list of repairs and upgrades remains constant. In short, Molloy commands a complex physical plant that needs the same quality of attention and repair as any residence or business out there. That’s where our Facilities Department, and Buildings and Grounds Committee of the School Board knowledge, talents, and abilities are essential and critical to the life of Molloy. This dynamic team consists of Buildings & Grounds Chair Stephane Audrin’85, Robert O’Donohue ’94, Brian Yuska, and Brendan Cloonan ’01, as well as Gino Fazio ’81.

This year our Capital Renewal Budget was $200,000 in addition to general maintenance to our over 55 year old facility. We take for granted the financial drain of consumables such as electricity and natural gas...but when it comes time to replace section of a roof you can’t even see from the street, the cost of repair is just as unsettling but the urgency just doesn’t seem to resonate on the same scale.

Your support to the Fund For Molloy – our annual appeal – ensures the our School has the financial flexibil-ity and sustainability throughout the 6 acre campus. The more unrestricted support provided through Fund For Molloy enables Molloy to further its green efforts. The school is also in the process of several assess-ment phases accounting of electrical and natural gas consumption in our building.

Deepest Thanks,

Craig M. Katinas ‘93Alumni Development Director

Since 1987, the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic has raised over $2 million in support of Molloy’s scholarship pro-gram. Everyone at Molloy is extremely thankful for the generosity of so many in our community, including alumni, parents, and friends. In addition, the Stanner Golf Classic owes much of its success to the many corporations that support the event via donations and sponsorships. We could not do it without them, and their philanthropy is crucial to the success of countless future students at Molloy. We recognize their contributions in our Annual Report below:

Zephiriny Societyhe Zephiriny Society at Archbishop Molloy High School honors alumni, parents and friends who have included Molloy in their estate plans or have made some other type of planned gift to Molloy. Zephiriny Society members are invited to recognition events and are counted amongst our school’s most valued supporters. Many donors come to us seeking guidance about more tax-efficient ways to support Molloy, sometimes

even transferring wealth in the process. Molloy offers a wide range of giving vehicles that may help you realize immediate tax savings, reduce or eliminate income, capital gains, estate taxes, or make a more significant gift than you ever imagined possible. Here is one story...

TLegacy Giving to Archbishop Molloy High School

“We’ve spent so much time at Molloy, it’s like a second home,” said Mr. William Gallo, father of Stanners William ‘85, Stephen ‘90, and John ‘93. Along with wife Marie, the Gallos are a true Stanner family. “We’ve been invested in Molloy since 1988 because we recognize it as an institution well guided in morality.” The Gallo boys received an excellent education in mind, body and spirit at Molloy, and all benefited from programs like the Esopus camps and the leadership of the Marist Brothers. As a result, the school has left a lasting impact on the entire Gallo family. “We feel it is important to maintain a

connection with Molloy even though our sons have graduated. We want to be a part of the school that we love,” said Mr. Gallo. In this way, William and Marie have sponsored the reading lounge in Molloy’s William J. Murphy Library, naming it in honor of their family matriarch, Elizabeth. “It is important to us that our family be remembered when we’re gone, but we also want our actions to inspire others to give to the school,” said Mr. Gallo. The Gallos’ generosity has since had an immediate impact on countless students, and their inspiring stewardship is a key to sustaining Molloy’s tradition of excellence.

The

Phraseology for Real Property:“I give and devise unto Archbishop Molloy High School, of 83-53 Manton Street, Briarwood, New York, the following described real property.” Important Tips:

• Talk to a variety of specialists, including your attorney, a financial advisor and the Stanner Alumni Center. Learn as much as you can about various charitable gift options and the kinds of gifts that make the most sense for both you and Molloy.

• Engage an attorney and/or advisor who will best represent you and your interests. Always make sure there is a backup attorney and/or advisor in case your attorney/advisor is unavailable at a critical time.

• For legal work, enlist an attorney who practices estate planning on a full-time or nearly full-time basis. Determine your attorney and/ or advisor’s expertise in relationship to your needs. Wills? Accounting? Tax law? Trusts?

Wills & EstateOne particular consideration in doing so is that estate gifts of this kind can reduce or even eliminate the need to pay tax on an estate, and being exempt from inheritance tax. The amount of a bequest to Archbishop Molloy High School is a personal decision. Your bequest is an expression of your love for St. Ann’s and Molloy and we are truly grateful for your generous consideration. Phraseology for leaving personal property (money, stocks, bonds, etc.) to Molloy:

“I give and bequeath unto Archbishop Molloy High School, of 83-53 Manton Street, Briarwood, New York, _____ % of my estate (or the sum of $____________) for its general corporate uses and purposes.”

Gifts of Life InsuranceYou can name Molloy as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy. If you retain any control over the policy, no income tax deduction is allowed; however, if Molloy is named both the sole owner and beneficiary of a paid-up policy, you may receive an immediate charitable deduction for the lesser of the policy’s fair market value or the net premiums paid. Additional premiums that you pay may also be tax deductible.

Gifts of Retirement PlansRetirement plans such as a 403 (b), ESOP, etc. may enable you to make a larger gift than you anticipated because income and estate taxes are not imposed when plan assets are distributed to Archbishop Molloy High School. If left to an heir, the plan assets are subject to income tax. Your retirement account’s plan administrator (the company that manages the account) can help you designate Molloy as a primary or contingent beneficiary on the plan’s beneficiary designation form.
