Evening Prayer Worship Service Resumes at Pilgrim

There is power in prayer! This is why our Lord commanded us to pray. “Be joyful

always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God

in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18. On Wednesday, May 31st

beginning at 6 p.m. Pilgrim Church will be open for a time of prayer. Meet with

the Pastor or an Elder or simply come and pray for your personal concerns or

that of others. Candles will be lit, soft music playing, and a meditative environ-

ment maintained. You may submit special prayer request in our Prayer Request

box in the Narthex, or by email. Prayer requests are also taken during the Wor-

ship Service. Please join us on the last Wednesday of each month for our Even-

ing Prayer worship Service, pending holiday schedules.)

(No “Wednesday Night Live” Bible Study will be held on these evenings.)

Pray for Pilgrim’s Jews For Jesus Missionary Scheffee Taylor

Scheffee will be in Berlin, Germany in June, participating in the Behold Your God Witnessing Campaign. She needs

our prayers for her protection and safety, as she reaches out to Jews and Non Jews, giving them the Gospel of

Jesus Christ. Scheffee and the Jews For Jesus Missionaries will be distributing Christian literature, doing personal

witnessing and will celebrate Jesus with evangelistic street banners and music. There is danger in witnessing

about Jesus and Sheffee has come under danger in the past. Please pray for her and the other Jews For Jesus

Missionaries. Additional information will be forthcoming as for the exact dates she will be gone and for the mon-

ey she needs to raise for this trip. All Jews For Jesus Missionaries must raise their own money. Your donations

are tax deductible and should be made out to Jews For Jesus.

The Mission of Pilgrim Lutheran Church is to be an incarnation of Jesus Christ to

people of all ages in the Santa Monica area and throughout the world.

Narthex Prayer Box

Prayer requests can be placed in the Church prayer box in the narthex. Please make use of this blessing and re-

member the power of prayer! Pastor Kilian is the only person who opens the box. Please mark the prayers for

private or public petition. Please see the “Prayer List” in the Newsletter and help us keep it updated. We want to

know how God has answered our prayers.

Thank You Volunteers!

How can we ever properly thank our wonderful volunteers who made our Palm Sun-

day and Easter Worship Services and Brunch so successful!. Many thanks to Chair

Lana Bennett, Michael Ashburn, (Michael cooked up a huge batch of lamb chops)

Dietmar Kruger, Joe Lessard, Carolyn Eisenberg, Laurie Risk, Sharon Dean, David

Hutchinson, Kay Morr, Sylvia Haberl, Pastor and Letty Kilian, Kathy Haynes, Beverlee

Gibson, Marcia McCready, the Church Growth Committee and others who provided

delicious food for our Easter Brunch, and helped set up and clean up. We also had vol-

unteers hide Easter Eggs for the Children’s Egg Hunt. Tron Burdick, Jeannette Rhodes

and Pastor Kilian planted flowers in our Courtyard and also cleaned out the wilted

brush and old landscaping. And thank you to those who helped decorate our Sanctuary for Easter Sunday! God

bless you all!

Mary Harper is the Best!

We want to thank our Music Director, Mary Harper and our wonderful, faithful Choir for their performances during

our Wednesday Night Lenten Worship Services, and our Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday Wor-ship Services. They spent many hours rehearsing in the evening and on Sunday afternoons and their work is much

appreciated. Kimshelley Lessard and Michael Haberl enriched our Easter Sunday Worship Service with beautiful

Solos. To God be the Glory!

9th Annual Walk to Africa is Saturday May 6th

September 1, 2017. They just returned from The Gambia, celebrating 20 years in Africa. Since 1998 they have treat-

ed over 65,000 people, To find out how you can participate and the ticket prices, call (310) 264-0634 or go to walktoafrica.com for additional information. The event begins in Crescent Bay Park, Santa Monica. There is a scenic

4 or 8 Mile Course and a 2 Mile Children’s Walk and Family Fun Zone. (Santa Monica Four Square Church , Light-

house Medical Missions, 2216 Santa Monica Blvd. # 204, Santa Monica, CA 90404.) See more information in the Nar-

Adult Bible Classes, Worship Services and more… “Wednesday Night Live”

“WNL” (Wednesday Night Live) Bible Class meets at 6 p.m. in the Conference Room. We will continue our study

on the Gospel of St. John the Beloved. Luther said of this book, “(in) John’s Gospel….you find depicted in mastery fash-

ion how faith in Christ overcomes sin, death and hell, and gives life, righteousness, and salvation. This is the real na-

ture of the Gospel.” We are currently in John Chapter 18 and beginning our study on the Trial, Torture and Crucifixion

of Jesus.

“Prime Time Bible Class”

Prime Time Bible Class will meet May 11th and 25th. The Bible Class is followed by lunch (bring your own) and the

celebration of birthdays. Coffee and dessert will be provided. The class is currently studying a series titled “Heroes

of the Bible” in which we have been exploring heroic achievements of various Bible Characters such as Noah, Abra-

ham, David, Rahab, Esther and others. A hero is often defined as one who shows great courage and strength in

achieving an act of noble purpose. We will take a look at these individuals and a specific event of their heroic action,

all in order that we may appreciate the Hero of Heroes, our great and almighty God. This is a Senior's Bible Study,

but all ages are invited. Check it out! Prime Time meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 11 a.m. in the

Discovery Conference Room. You will be glad you came!

Good Friday Drama Titled “Guilty”

We want to thank Kevin Edwards and Dane Gbreyes for their dramatic Good Friday Worship Service performance

tiled “Guilty.” Kevin portrayed Pontius Pilate and Dane portrayed the Roman Soldier. Pastor Kilian wrote the script

and Travis Bauer directed this forceful presentation. Pilgrim’s very talented Mark Calderon made the sets and also

the costumes. The forceful and dramatic acting of Kevin Edwards and Dane Gbreyes captured the attention of eve-

ryone in the Sanctuary. Because the setting was performed in candlelight the photos that were taken came out very

dark. We were able to get a photo of Dane, Pastor, Travis and Mark in the Narthex after the Worship Service and

that photo is on the front page of this publication. We will perform “Guilty” again on Sunday, May 7th in the Wor-

ship Service. (Photo taking will be enhanced during the daylight presentation. )

Church Event/ Worship Photos Request!

We are looking for members to take photos of Church Events and Fellowship. Our

“unofficial church photographer,” Michelle Montgomery has moved to Colorado Springs,

and she used to email photos that were used in the newsletter. We miss Michelle very

much and we miss her expert photography, via her handy iPhone. You may email the

photos to the church office email address or to the church secretary, Kathy. Your help

will be much appreciated.

Pacifica’s “i-site” Show May 25-27

Pacifica will hold their annual “i-site” Talent Show/Art Show May 25-27. We will update you on the performance

times and information. The students display their various talents ranging from singing, drama, poetry, art work, all as

a “Live Performance” talent show.

May Bible Class Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class, meets at 9:00 a.m. before the 10:00 a.m. Worship Service, in the Discovery

Conference Room. All are invited. Pastor Kilian leads this Class. We are doing a background study of the Pericope

Readings for each Sunday. This includes an Old Testament Reading, Epistle and Gospel reading for each Sunday specifi-

cally chosen to coincide with this Season of the Church Year. Understanding these Readings for each Sunday will

enhance your Worship experience and build a greater base of Biblical Knowledge, all for the sake of growth in

Faith. You will have a “head start” on the Sunday Bulletin readings! We have had many compliments on this inter-

esting Bible Class!

Gospel Readings for May

May Sunday School Update From Ann Evelyn

Pilgrim's Sunday School aims to serve each child and his or her family. Just as

parents train children for responsible behavior, Sunday School transmits our

Faith. God cares for us because we are His, created and redeemed. For chil-

dren as well as for adults, the Holy Bible is our 'owners manual'. In everyday life,

we look up operating information and 'specs' about products such as automo-

biles and appliances. God's Word tells us we are made in His image, fell into sin,

and are redeemed only through Christ's victory. Sunday School contributes to

your child's grasp of Bible vocabulary and introduces a Christian understanding

of history. God is outside of time. He created time and everything and every-

one in time is traveling to its conclusion. May Sunday School lessons are: Jesus

Appears in Galilee, Jesus Ascends into Heaven, and John's Vision of Heaven. During

the summer the curriculum will include the My First Catechism workbook. Oth-

er activities will be included as time permits. Our class welcomes visitors.

Humor “The quickest way for a mother to get her chil-

dren’s attention is to sit down and look comfort-

able.” ~ Pastor Ralph J. Mineo

The Pastor, leading prayers, was being carried

away by his own exuberance. He began: “O Thou,

who rulest the raging of the sea and calms the

fierceness of the winds…” He then seemed to

lose himself for a moment, but soon carried on:

“...bless our wives.” ~ The Desert Wind

Headline in Centre View, a Northern Virginia sub-

urban newspaper: Holy Spirit Now Officially

Lutheran. The article below it was about the or-

ganization of a new church, Holy Spirit Lutheran

Church in Centreville, VA

“Faith always has a companion joy in the Holy

Spirit.” ~ Martin Luther

Question: “Why did the Israelites wander 40

years in the desert? Answer: “Even then the men

would not stop and ask for directions.”

Advice is that which the wise don’t need, and the

fool won’t take.” ~ Rev. John J.Kelly

Martin Luther wrote: “God is not a God of sad-

ness, but the devil is. Christ is a God of Joy. It is

pleasing to the dear God, whenever thou rejoices

or laughest from the bottom of thy heart.”

John Wesley said: “Sour godliness is the devil’s

religion”

Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and

discerning if he holds his tongue.” Proverbs 17:28

Mother’s Day Prayer

Merciful Jesus, Son of Mary, You humbled Yourself to be

born of a virgin and were obedient to her in fulfillment of

the Commandments. We give thanks to You for the gift of

life You have given us through our mothers and for the re-

birth into Your life of forgiveness given to us through Bap-

tism. Grant that we may so love our mothers with Your

love, which renews all things. Amen.

As We Remember Memorial Day

In his farewell speech to Corps of Cadets at West Point,

General Douglas MacArthur gave a moving tribute to the

ideals that inspire the great American soldier. For as long

as other Americans serve their country courageously and

honorably, his words will live on. The following excerpt

from May 1962 is one small paragraph of his famous

speech:

Duty-Honor-Country: The code which those words perpetuate embraces the highest moral laws and will stand the

test of any ethics or philosophies ever promulgated for the uplift of mankind. Its requirements are for the things that are

right, and its restraints are from the things that are wrong. The soldier, above all other men, is required to practice the

greatest act of religious training—sacrifice. In battle and in the face of danger and death, he discloses those divine

attributes which his Maker gave when He created Man in His own image. No physical courage and no brute instinct can

take the place of the Divine help which alone can sustain him. However horrible the incidents of war may be, the soldier

who is called upon to offer and give his life for his country is the noblest development of mankind.

Station of the Cross that we used during Lent and Easter. We are asking members who donated their items to

contact the Church Office so you can pick up your items and take them home. Your help was much

appreciated. Please see the photo on the front of the newsletter with Pastor giving a “Tour” of the symbols.
