BOX 3793 Torrance, CA 90510-3793 www.SouthBayOrchidSociety.com Founded in July 1957 November 2010 After 20 years or so of association, Doctor McPherson passed away, and Jean McPherson, his wife, continued as a partner of Zuma Canyon Orchids. When Jean retired, Zuma Canyon Orchids fell under the umbrella of the Vazquez family who continue to operate it. They have received many accolades and represent approximately 50 years of experience from Amado Vasquez, and another 40 years of experience from Maria Vasquez, who ran the lab. Zuma Canyon Orchids has a lot of years of experience in growing Phalaenopsis and if you are looking for any information, do not hesitate to contact them. They will be more than happy to assist you in any way. It is easy for us to say that in the last past 50 years, Amado, George, and Maria have been involved in receiving, both at Arthur Freed and at Zuma Canyon Orchids, well over 800 A.O.S. awards and at least eight or more F.C.C. gold medals at world orchid conferences. This month’s plant table is furnished by Zuma Canyon Orchids. Specializing in Phalaenopsis, George Vasquez grows and hybridizes awardwinning examples of these genera. George has been growing orchids for about thirty years and is an accredited Orchid Society Judge and has served on various committees for A.O.S. for over 17 years. During the last few years when he was on the board, they founded what now is known as the permanent location in the new headquarters of the American Orchid Society. George retired when he was on the executive board, last serving as secretary of the A.O.S. Most of you know the story of Zuma Canyon Orchids, but for those who don’t... Zuma Canyon Orchids was founded in 1971 by Dr. James McPherson and Amado & Maria Vazquez. Dr. McPherson's love of plants and his association with the Vasquez family, who were at the time growing for the Arthur Freed Orchid Co. down the street, grew into a lifelong friendship that eventually turned into Zuma Canyon Orchids. Orchid Care Session 7 pm Orchids 101 on Steroids: Session 1 – Don Goss will present "The Three Pillars of Orchids." What the heck is that? Well, these are THE three most important cultural things to get right. If you ignore or screw up everything else but get these three things right, your plants should, in the words of Leonard Nimoy as Dr. Spock, "live long and prosper." There will be a handout covering all the major genera that you typically buy at shows. See Don Goss’ article on p. 3 for more information about this new funfilled series of how to master orchid growing the easy way. Phal. From the President’s Desk

The year is almost gone and we are busy col-lecting, trading, potting, growing, and loving our Orchids. It's that time in Southern California when the Cymbidiums are starting to spike and our Cattleyas are getting their blooms ready to burst open. Our weather has been very con-fused lately, yet our plants are coping and they will reward us.

As required in our bylaws, the annual audit for the past fiscal year has been completed. Our members included our Treasurer Christine Hough, Tom Renger - Past President and Direc-tor, and Don Smith. My thanks to all three for donating their time and auditing the society's financial records. Charlotte has been very busy preparing, edit-ing, and proofreading the new Membership Di-rectory for 2010-2011. Eeva has been lending a hand and helping in the task. Thanks also to Don Goss for his photographic skills. Be sure to pick up your copy at the November meeting, one directory per membership family, please. Don't forget to mark your calendars and join all of us at our Christmas Potluck Holiday Party on December 17th. This will replace the regularly

scheduled monthly meeting. Kayo will be plan-ning the event and we will have sign-up sheets at the November meeting for the goodies you are bringing. Please see Kayo's article on page 4 for all the details. Please join us for a wonder-ful get together for a relaxing and fun evening. Members attending will receive a free Orchid plant, one plant per membership household. Our board will be putting on a display at the Newport Harbor Orchid Expo Show & Sale in January 2011 at the Westminster Mall. The show will take place from January 28 to Janu-ary 30. My thanks to Marla Corey for agreeing to be the Chair for this event. Further informa-tion can be found at: http://nhos.org/shows/2011/home.html Due to numerous requests we will be trying something different at the November meeting. There will be no raffle ticket sales during the culture session. Raffle tickets will go on sale during the breaks after the culture session and after the main speaker's presentation. The board has decided to allow our experienced growers to conduct some of the future culture sessions with a focus toward the basics for our newer members. See next page for more infor-mation. I will see you on November 19th — Happy "Early" Thanksgiving to all. Arthur Hazboun – President and Webmaster, SBOS, Inc.

Orchid Care on Steroids

"I JUST WANT TO GET BETTER AT GROWING MY PLANTS!" That's why I joined the society in the first place." And that's why SBOS is re-vamping our monthly culture sessions. Nick Braemer along with yours truly will be pre-senting our monthly culture sessions aimed to making you the best grower you can be. Each month we'll present a specific topic having to do with orchid growing in the South Bay — not what they are doing in Borneo, Manila, or Taipei. We will go into each topic in detail. As Nick put it "it will be Orchids 101 on Steroids!" Good growers know that you can't cover eve-rything you need to know in 45 minutes. So, Nick and I will break it down. We’re going to start at the beginning and each month will build on the previous. This is a series you won't want to miss! If you just joined the society or have been a member for a while, and you are not abso-lutely confident that what you are doing is “right,” then this is the place to be. We’ll focus on what you mainly buy at local shows, like Cymbidiums, Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis, Epiden-drums, Zygopetalums, Oncidiums, Vandas, and Slippers too. You may wish to bring something on which to take notes. The first of the series will kick off this month at 7:00. So be there and be on time!
