The National Institutes of Health estimates more than 90 million adults in the United States have low health literacy. It affects their ability to make health decisions and can harm their health. They may have trouble managing chronic diseases and leading a healthy lifestyle. Health literacy reflects how well a person understands the health information and services they need and using them to make good health decisions.

Who Should AttendThe 2016 Ochsner Health Literacy Summit is for healthcare professionals and educators to learn best practices and innovative methods for improving patient understanding of basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions.

Presenters

Marc R. Matrana, MD is the associate program director of Ochsner medical oncology fellowship program. He has conducted ground-breaking research and authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters in the field of genitourinary

medical oncology. He specializes in treating patients with cancers of the genitourinary tract, as well as lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and other malignancies and hematologic diseases. Dr. Matrana is an active medical educator, serving in leadership positions with local medical schools including the University of Queensland School of Medicine/Ochsner Clinical School.

Dolev Melamed, MBA-H is the

Jenice Heck, LOTR, MMC is the vice president of vision rehabilitation services at Lighthouse Louisiana, where she manages programs for people with vision loss of all ages in Southeast Louisiana. She also provides

sensitivity training to local medical facilities, the New Orleans Council on Aging Senior Companion Program, area schools, and a variety of special interest groups.

Nicky Gillies, NIC is the director of deaf services at Lighthouse Louisiana and a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter. She supervises programs made available through a partnership with the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf,

coordinates sign language interpreting services, and provides advocacy on best practices.
