“LA VOCE D’ ABRUZZO”

Fallisce il patto di desistenza Cruz-Kasich. Il magnate più vicino alla nomi-nation. NEW YORK – Donald Trump vince nettamente anche nell’Indiana.

nel New Mexico.

one in campo democratico.

Hillary e Sanders testa a testa Testa e testa in campo democratico tra Hillary Clinton e Bernie Sanders Gli 87 delegati in palio vengono

-ABRUZZO HERITAGE- ~ DALMAZIO SANTINI ~

Early life:

Santini was born in Capestrano in the Abruzzo province of Italy. He immigrated to the United States at age 14. He attended public schools in White Plains, New York.

He was inducted into the US Armed Forces and served in World War II, eventually settling in Valhalla, New York. Follow-ing the war, the G.I. Bill of Rights allowed him the opportunity to study composition at Manhattanville College and the Mannes College of Music. Santini studied composition with Felix Salzer and Tadeusz Kassern, and conducting with Milton Forstat.

Musical career:

Santini developed a system of composition using 21-tone rows. This system is similar to the more familiar 12-tone sys-tem of serial composition, but the rows Santini used as the basis of his 21-tone compositions also include all alternative en-harmonic spellings for each note in the chromatic scale (except the notes D, G, and A, which have no enharmonic spell-ings). Thus, the available tones for a 21-tone row would include B-sharp, C, C-sharp, D-flat, D, D-sharp, E-flat, E, F-flat, E-sharp, F, F-sharp, G-flat, G, G-sharp, A-flat, A, A-sharp, B-flat, B, and C-flat. In order to generate 21-tone rows, Santini utilized a specially printed deck of cards (each card representing one of the aforementioned pitches), "dealing" himself rows until he found the row or rows he wished to use as the basis for a particular composition.

Other of Santini's innovations include the use of circular notation (in his Continuum for accordion), as well as quarter tones (which he referred to as "quasi tones"). His 2+4,+ calls for inside-the-piano playing as well as other techniques so avant-garde as to approach the theatrical, reminiscent of a John Cage "happening."

Many of Santini's other works are composed in a gentle, tonal, and more accessible style. Much of his output is for piano, and his numerous accordion works have been performed worldwide. His most widely performed composition, Ave Maria, has been recorded by the duo of vocalist Mary Mancini and accordionist Mario Tacca.

Santini's many works for orchestra include The White Peaks of Forca and Canti Gabrieleschi. These works are also tonal, though modern in style, and draw on Santini's Italian heritage. His Canticum Angelicum was performed by the orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera San Carlo in Naples. Among his last works is a concerto for viola and orchestra, composed with the 21-tone sys-tem.

A devout Roman Catholic, much of Santini's output is sacred in nature, often with Latin texts. His Magnificat was selected for performance at the 1992 Incontri di Musica Sacra Contemporanea festival in Rome, Italy.

Santini's music was self-published by his own company, DelSan Publications.

Retirement

Upon his retirement in 1981, Santini moved to Cape Coral in southwest Florida. He died in nearby Fort Myers in 2001.

MEET MISS ABRUZZESE 2016 ALESSIA RISI

My name is Alessia, and I was born in Vasto, which is a city in the prov-ince of Chieti in Abruzzo. I lived there a total of 5 years and I visit at least twice a year every year. When I visit, in the winter I go to my grand-mothers’ houses, and when I visit in the summer I sped most of my time at my house in Vasto Marina. I love going back because I get to see my family and my friends, and I get to live the Italian traditions. I graduated from International Academy in Bloomfield Hills (MI) in 2014 and I am now a freshman with sophomore credits at Michigan State University. I was the president of the French Honor Society during the last two years of high school, and I was also part of the Spanish honor society. During high school I was also part of the higher choir and the morning choir. I took piano lessons when I lived in Turkey, and I am teaching myself how to play the Ukulele. I can speak five languages, which are French, Span-ish, Turkish, English and Italian. I used to play volleyball and I used to swim. I am also a horseback rider, however I had to stop because it was not available at my campus. Now I am part of a business co-ed fraternity called Pi Sigma Epsilon, with this fraternity we do a lot of work for busi-nesses, and we connect to business leaders through our events. I feel like I would be the best Miss Abruzzese because I know the culture very well since I visit twice a year, and my whole family is still there. Therefore I think I could represent Abruzzo in the best way.

TASTES AND FLAVORS OF ABRUZZO THE HILLS

Lanciano, Fossacesia, Casoli, Guardiagrele, Pianella, Moscufo, Loreto Aprutino, Campli

Set back from the coast, olive trees flourish in the valleys of Todino and Vomano in the province of Teramo, in the Tavo valley in the province of Pescara and in thhe hills which lie between the towns of Chieti and Vasto. The oil from each area has its own fragrance and taste with DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) certification awarded to the Apru-tino-pescarese, Colline Pretuziane and Colline

teatine olive oils. Between San Vito and fossacesia it is quite easy to come across small lemon groves and in fact local growers were the first to try citrus flavours olive oil, where the oil is pressed together with cit-rus fruits. Abruzzese bread, which is inseparable from the oil, often spicy and mixed with ground chilli (locally called “olio santo” (holy oil), also re-flects this regions varied cuisine.

In the Pescara area, there is “pane al canestro” (basket bread) with the dough left to rise in wicker baskets; in the Chieti area, a yellow bread is made using a local variety of durum wheat ( “Cappelli”), while I some areas inland, potatoes are still added to the brad dough so brad ca be kept for longer periods.
