“JOY” Sermon Series - Week 5 (Jan. 16/17, 2016)

Finding Joy in the Midst of Life’s Storms

Storms happen • Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an

opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. (James 1:2-4; NLT)

Face the storms … don't avoid them.

• Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)

• I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)

• Prepare your Spiritual Emergency Preparedness Kit

• Don’t stop living … cling to joy

Know that God will give you the power you need.

• God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Storms happen … hold your head up high • I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord,

who made heaven and earth.  (Ps. 121:1-2)

Devotional - Discussion Guide

• Begin your time with prayer. Ask God’s Holy Spirit to guide your time together as you study His Word. Pray that the stresses and concerns of the week can be put aside so you can focus properly.

• Today’s topic is “Finding Joy in the Midst of Life’s Storms.” What kinds of storms have you faced: 1) Literally - that is, weather-type of storms; and 2) other storms … health, relationship, employment, etc.

Page 2: “JOY” Sermon Series - Week 5 (Jan. 16/17, 2016)...2016/01/17  · “JOY” Sermon Series - Week 5 (Jan. 16/17, 2016) Finding Joy in the Midst of Life’s Storms Storms happen

• Pastor Scott shared what he learned from a weather-related storm his family faced. What did you learn from your life storms?

• Read from James 1-24 on the other side under the first point. How do you see “troubles of any kind” becoming opportunities for joy? How have storms in your past taken on a different perspective with the passage of time?

• Why do you think it is important to face our storms rather than avoid them? Have you done that? Has that been easy to do or not? Share why if you would.

• What items do you think you have in your Spiritual Emergency Preparedness Kit today? What items do you need to add?

• How had God given you power to face your storms? Please share as you are able in order to encourage others.

• Paul in Romans 8 asked “If God is for us, who is against us? Knowing God is FOR you; how can that assist you in facing life’s storms? How has God been FOR you so far in life?

• If the joy we have been talking about is far-deeper than happiness; and, in fact, comes out of knowing God’s grace; are you beginning to see how it is possible to have joy even in the midst of storms? Please discuss.

• Close with prayer. Pray about what you have discussed and pray for each other.
