What a wonderful spring we have experienced! I had the opportunity to attend the National

Iris Convention in Dallas, Texas. The programs were interesting and the garden tours were

challenging. Unfortunately, the evening before the garden tours were to begin, Mother Nature

decided that Texas, especially the Dallas area, needed rain and rain it did and then in came the

winds. The temperature dropped and it was cool the rest of the week. By Saturday, the

weather began to warm a little.

Next came the affiliates Iris Shows. First we traveled to Belleville, Illinois to the National

Shrine of the Our Lady of the Snows. The irises exhibited were fine. Margaret and I enjoyed

having lunch with the members and judges, thanks!

We next traveled to Springfield to the Washington Park Botanical Garden for the Sangamon

Valley Iris Show. They had a very good turn out and I understand over 100 people visited the

show. Thanks to Sangamon Valley for the nice lunch!

Next, we traveled to Eldorado, Illinois to attend garden judging with Steve Poole conducting

the tall bearded training and Jerry and Melody conducting the Louisiana Iris training. Lunch

was enjoyed by all under the big top tent. Thanks, Carol for preparing the delicious foods for

lunch.

The Prairie Iris Show was our next stop in Urbana at the Lincoln Square Village Mall. We

had a good variety of irises along with seedlings. The youth members exhibited a total of 16

cultivars. A Chinese lunch was enjoyed by members and judges.

Our final show was at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. This show had both a cultivar

show and an artistic show as well. Again a good variety of irises were on display. Lunch at

the Morton Arboretum was enjoyed by the members and judges.

We are looking forward to the fall meeting at Washington Park Botanical Garden on Saturday

August 10, 2013, meeting beginning at 10:00AM. We ask that you bring irises for the public

sale! We always enjoy getting together and sharing stories with our iris friends. Hope to see

you in Springfield on August 10th.

How About Powdered Milk (Second in a Series)

Europeans have been growing plants from seed for several thousand years. No one knows

who made that first leap of logic to save seeds from wild plants, keep them safe over the

winter, then plant those seeds the following spring to yield a crop in a location close to

their home.

Since men tended to be the hunters and women and children gathered the plant foods, I

have little doubt that it was some creative woman who invented gardening and subse-

quently agriculture. The archeological record confirms that fiber and food crops were the

first plants to be cultivated. Throughout the long history of agriculture little energy and

space could be wasted on the cultivation of flowers. However, as civilizations developed,

well fed and clothed humans began to cultivate flowers.

With the discovery of the first Laws of Genetics by the Austrian monk, Gregor Mendel,

during the mid 1800s, plant breeding entered the next level of development. He hand polli-

nated specific varieties of garden peas, then grew the offspring to study how physical

traits were inherited.

Irises, especially bearded irises, are easily grown from seed. During the late 1800s, Euro-

pean plant breeders, such as the Vilmorin nursery firm of France, influenced by the work

of Gregor Mendel, began to selectively breed bearded irises. Their breeding work, along

with that of other irisarians, such as W. R. Dykes, led in an unbroken chain to the devel-

opment of our modern irises.

During the early 1960s, my cousin Helen Jordan, taught me how to pollinate tall bearded

irises and grow them from seed. In those days, the process went somewhat like this:

1. During bloom season, the selected parents were cross-pollinated.

2. Approximately sixty days after pollination, the seed pods matured and began to

split open.

3. The seeds were harvested and dried indoors.

4. In early fall, a seed bed was prepared.

5. Sometime around Thanksgiving, the seeds were planted in rows and covered with

boards to protect them from weather, digging dogs, and especially digging cats

who find it difficult to resist fresh tilled dirt.

6. The boards covering the rows were removed the following spring in early to mid

March.

7. Around the spring equinox (March 21-22), the iris seeds began to germinate.

8. By mid May, when the new seedlings were about six to eight inches tall, they were

transplanted into the big garden where they were grown for two years for the

purpose of evaluation.


As any gardener knows, plants grow better when fertilized. To help prevent transplant

shock and encourage good growth, Helen taught me to water the transplant rows with

manure tea.

To make manure tea, Helen filled a large wash tub with water, added a couple of shovels

full of rotted horse manure, stirred the mixture daily for a few days, then used the dark

liquid when transplanting any plants (flowers or vegetables) in her garden. As one might

imagine, manure tea can sometimes be a bit odoriferous.

After I met Georgia Hinkle and began to help her transplant iris seedlings, she belittled

the manure tea method and said why not use powdered milk! For Georgia's transplant

fertilizer, she mixed powdered milk with water, watered the rows with the milk solution,

sprinkled in some blood meal, then transplanted the iris seedlings.

The only drawback to using the milk and blood meal, was the neighborhood dogs and

cats, who, smelling the odor, attempted to find the underground food source. Thus the iris

gardener had to devote about a week or two to running off the neighborhood pets. Today,

I use Miracle-Grow plant food, and everything works just fine.

Helen and Georgia, you never had it so good. (P.S. I now plant my seeds in pots, not the

open ground.)

2013 Iris Show Reports

This year we had the opportunity to attend all five of the Affiliates Iris Shows. Below are the

details of each show. We hope you had an opportunity to attend at least one of these shows. If

not, make plans to attend one next year.

Over the Rainbow in Iris – Mid Illinois and Southern Illinois Iris Societies

The members of the Mid Illinois Iris Society and Southern Illinois Iris Society held their annual

Spring Iris Show “Over the Rainbow” Saturday May 4, 2013 at the National Shrine of Our

Lady of the Snows in the Guild Center, Belleville, Illinois. This was the first time the show has

been held at the Shrine. Public viewing was 10 AM to 4 PM. There were 72 entries in this

show with the help of eight members. Some classes were not filled as this was basically a Me-

dian Iris Show with only two Tall Bearded Irises, an Arilbred Iris and species cross.

It rained the day and night before the show. The cultivars were in good condition despite the

weather. The best specimen of the show “Starwoman” (Marky Smith, 1998, IB) was exhibited

by Ernie and Ann Henson and the runner up “Raspberry Ice” (Keppel, 2012, SDB) was exhib-

ited by Jeff Kassly. The silver medal for the most blue ribbons, went to Jeff Kassly and the

bronze medal went to Leora McTall. Thanks to all the exhibitors for making the show a suc-

cess. Lunch was enjoyed by the members and judges. The judges were Larry and Barbara

Miller and Margaret Kelly. Show Chairman was Anita Stephens. We look forward to your

show next year!

Prairie Iris Society

The annual spring Prairie Iris Show was held Saturday May 25, 2013 at the Lincoln Square

Mall in Urbana, Illinois. This was our 25th annual show! Judging began at 10:30. This time

the ladies judged as one team and men judged as one team. The ladies judged the tall bearded

while the men judged the rest of the show. Together, the judges picked the section winners and

then went on to pick the Queen of Show. Public viewing was from noon until 4 PM. There

were nine exhibitors with 108 entries in the show, of those, 16 cultivars were exhibited by four

youth members. The “Best Specimen of the Show was exhibited by youth member Matthew

with “Pursuit of Happiness” (T. Johnson, 2007) a tall bearded iris. The best seedling was “Q29-

D”, a space ager, exhibited by Brian Davis.

The silver medal went to Jerry & Melody Wilhoit with 24 blue ribbons and the bronze medal

went to Newberry Daylilies with five blue and ten red ribbons. Youth silver medal went to Josh

with four blue ribbons and Matthew the bronze medal with three blues and two red ribbons.

Thanks to all the exhibitors who helped make this milestone 25th show a success. A Chinese

lunch was enjoyed by the members and judges. Judges were Larry and Barbara Miller, Ernie

and Ann Henson, Anita Stephens and Patrick Hayden. Show chairmen were Brian and Carol

Davis. A special feature every year is to enjoy the cookies that Melody Wilhoit shares with the

membership; this is a tradition with Prairie Iris Society!


Northern Illinois Iris Society Show Report

The Northern Illinois Iris Society's Annual Iris Show was held on June 1st and 2nd, 2013, at

The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL. (just west of Chicago.) We had six horticultural exhibitors

enter 57 AIS-eligible specimens, all of which were different cultivars except for one:

'Thornbird' (Byers, 1989, TB). Two stalks were entered. There were four adult artistic exhibi-

tors and three youth artistic exhibitors. Despite there being fewer youth entrants, they created

more arrangements: 12, versus the adults' 11! Great job, girls!

We had an additional eight entries in two classes that were not eligible for AIS awards, but al-

lowed for people who don't know the names of their irises or whose bloom was nearly spent to

compete for club awards: "Individual Blooms" and "UFO's: Unidentified Flowering Objects."

Best Specimen was awarded to tall bearded 'Becky's Bonnet' (Limmer, 1998), exhibited by

Charles Simon. Runner-up went to Siberian iris 'Laugh Out Loud' (Hollingworth, 2007), also

exhibited by Mr. Simon. Even with a bum foot, he swept the show!

Also appearing on the Queen's Table was Best in Section miniature tall bearded 'Pretty

Quirky' (A. Probst, 1992), exhibited by Diana Anshakov. Section Sweepstakes were awarded in

the tall bearded and miniature tall bearded classes to Diana Anshakov and to Charles Simon in

the Siberian Class.

In the artistic division, the best arrangement was created by Cathy Hendrickson for her entry in

the class "Roy Rogers and Trigger at the Chicago Coliseum". Best youth arrangement went to

Samantha, also in the "Roy Rogers" class. Those ladies sure captured the feel of the Old West!

The Artistic Sweepstakes was awarded to Cathy Hendrickson, with Samantha winning the

Youth Artistic Sweepstakes. Other youth provided beautiful entries.

We encouraged the visiting public to cast ballots for their favorite specimen and arrangement.

The results were fascinating - it's amazing how tastes vary! We had a good number of votes for

irises of all colors, shapes and sizes, including votes for entries in the Individual Blooms and

UFO classes. I think this was a great way to get the public to interact with and really enjoy the

show!

The winner of the People's Choice Award for favorite specimen was 'Southwest Silver

Haze' (A. Pyburn, 2005), a tall bearded exhibited by Mark and Nancy Timko. Runner-up was

border bearded 'Batik' (A. Ensminger, 1986), exhibited by Cathy Hendrickson. The irises that

came in right behind the winners with 2 votes apiece were TBs 'Holy Fire' (G. Sutton, 2000),

'Thornbird' (Byers, 1989), 'Fiery Temper' (Keppel, 2001), and 'Brussels' (T. Johnson, 2003),

species Iris fulva, and an orange-and-white "UFO" entered as "NOT Juan Valdez". Many other

irises received one vote apiece.

People’s Choice winners in the artistic division were Betsy Grimm for her arrangement in the

class “A Puppet Show in the Park”, and youth exhibitor Samantha for her entry in “A Puppet

Show in the Park”. I guess that makes “A Puppet Show in the Park” the people’s choice for fa-

vorite class, too!


We had a lot of people visit and enjoy the show, oohing and ahhing, taking pictures, and asking

iris questions. The arboretum was very pleased with the display and turnout, and has invited us

back to their beautiful venue in 2014. We had some rhizomes for sale, and sold out of every-

thing we had on day one of the show. Even better, we gained two new club members, and are

looking forward to getting to know them at events in the future. Congratulations to all the ex-

hibitors and volunteers for putting on a great show!

Sangamon Valley Iris Society 2013 Show Report

The Sangamon Valley Iris Society’s Iris Show was held on May 11, 2013 at the Washington

Park Botanical Garden, Springfield, Illinois. Over 100 members of the public visited the show.

Eight exhibitors entered 76 specimens. This was primarily a Median Show. Because of the

small number of tall bearded iris, the sections were:

Tall Bearded (TB) and Aril Bred (AB)

Intermediate Bearded (IB)

Border Bearded (BB), Miniature Tall Bearded (MTB), & Miniature Dwarf Bearded (MDB)

Standard Dwarf Bearded (SDB)

The Best Specimen, ‘Sand Dancer’ (Tasco, 2010, AB) was entered by Patrick Hemmer. Patrick

also won the following Sections:

‘Absolute Joy’ (Aitken, 2006), entered by Norma Bennett, was the SDB Section winner.

Judges were Ann and Ernie Henson and Margaret Kelly. Patrick Hemmer and Debra Miller co-

chaired the show. Debra Miller won the Horticultural Sweepstakes Silver Medal with 21 blue

ribbons. Norma Bennett won the Bronze Medal with 13 blue ribbons.

We asked the public to vote on their top eight favorite irises. 24 people voted. The winners

were:

Minutes, Region 9, American Iris Society (AIS) Meeting

April 6, 2013

Call to Order: Regional Vice President (RVP) Dave Kelly (Dave) called the meeting to order at

10:00 am. He recognized the prior RVPs – Chuck Simon, Steve Poole, Melody Wilhoit, Jerry

Wilhoit, Ernie Henson, and Margaret Kelly.

Secretary’s Report: Dave reported the minutes were published in the newsletter and asked for

any additions or corrections. There were none. The minutes were approved as published.

Treasurer’s Report: John Bilski provided the Treasurer’s report. See attached. Ernie Henson

made a motion to approve the report. Dave Miller seconded the motion. Motion approved and

Treasurer’s report was filed for audit.

Committee Reports:

Membership: Dave reported for Patrick Hayden. As of January 1, 2013 there are 130 mem-

bers in Region 9. Seven are E-Memberships and eight are youth members. The Region needs a

membership chairman since Patrick Hayden has resigned. The duties include sending a wel-

come to new members and keeping a current list of AIS members in Region 9. (The National

Membership Secretary provides the Membership Chair a list monthly.) Dave asked anyone in-

terested in the job to contact him after the meeting..

Web Master: Dave reported the web-site is pretty much up to date. The attendees were

pleased with the job Dave is doing.

Youth Chairman: No report.

Judge’s Training: Becky Simon was not present. Dave reminded all judges to be sure to turn

in their judges training report by August 1, 2013. All judges are to vote the ballot which they

will receive in the mail. All members have the opportunity to vote the symposium which will

be on the AIS web-site. Anyone interested in being a judge should see Margaret after the meet-

ing..

Iris Sale: Chuck Simon has been sending out post cards and news releases to newspapers. The

region reimburses him for these expenses. Originally, he sent out 350 post cards. Last year he

only sent out 100. Chuck tells us that we are only getting a 10% return on the post cards and

wonders if we should continue to mail post cards. The group decided we should continue send-

ing post cards. We will try to get email addresses for the future.

Chuck Simon will be ordering iris for the silent auction. He would like to order from Paul

Black. The group discussed buying from another hybridizer or other hybridizers. Steve Poole

made a motion that we move ahead with the purchase of $150 of irises and that we look at more

variety. John Bilski seconded the motion.


Dave urged the members to bring iris for the public sale. We are depending on our members

for most of the sale plants. Dave discussed purchasing median iris for the public sale from Red

Bud Lanes, Jerry and Melody Wilhoit, as we have in the past. The group agreed.

Dave mentioned that we are starting to get a following for our iris sale since we have been at

the Washington Park Botanical Gardens.

The group discussed the need to have more and better quality signs. Dave made a motion that

was amended by Steve Poole to authorize Renee Burns to spend up to $200. Ernie seconded

the motion and motion carried.

Members may donate iris plants introduced in the last 5 years and any iris merchandise they

care to donate. The Silent Auction will be from 8 AM until noon.

Newsletter:

Dave Miller asked about reducing the number of newsletters from three to two a year. Ernie

suggested we go back to two issues a year – Spring and Fall. The group approved. The spring

issue will highlight the spring meeting and the summer issue will highlight the fall meeting,

We discussed lunch – potluck or box lunches. It was decided to get box lunches from Panera.

Washington Park Botanical Gardens Membership

Dave reminded us that membership to Washington Park Botanical Gardens is $11 for a single

membership and $14 for a family. Membership is good for admission to participating gardens

throughout the United States.

Louisiana Iris for Washington Park Botanical Garden

Dave Miller suggested Region 9 donate Louisiana Iris for the Washington Park Botanical Gar-

dens water ponds. There was group discussion and it was decided Dave Miller should discuss

the idea with Washington Park Botanical Garden management. If the park management, would

like these iris for the water pond, Dave should discuss the donation with Wilhoits and Steve

Poole.


Approved Judges

Dave reported the list of approved judges for 2013 is on the AIS website.

Conventions

The AIS National Convention is April 15 through 20 in Dallas, Texas. The Convention Com-

mittee is asking each region to donate a basket filled with goodies for the Silent Auction. Our

basket will contain Illinois products – popcorn, pumpkin, honey, wine, and candy.

The National Siberian Convention is June 6 through 8 in Lansing, Michigan. Chuck Simon is

the President of the Siberian Iris Society.

New Business:

Spring 2014 Meeting

There was discussion about the date for the Spring 2014 Region 9 meeting. Two dates were dis-

cussed – April 5 and April 12. It was decided to have the meeting on Saturday April 12, 2014

at Rochester Community Center, Rochester Illinois.
