For most families, signing their five-
year-old up for Kindergarten is an
exciting milestone, but it is especially
exciting for Amanda and Jason
Shango and their son Jacob.
Jacob, a seemingly healthy baby,
was sent home like so many other
babies. When he was just one week
old, however, his mom noticed
something was really wrong and took
him back to the local hospital. They
were then sent to a larger hospital in

their area and from there Jacob was
airlifted to Michigan Medicine’s C.S.
Mott Children’s Hospital. Physicians
diagnosed Jacob with Hypoplastic
Left Heart Syndrome, requiring his first
open-heart surgery to save his life.
Jacob’s mom and dad stayed with
him at the hospital, first in the Mott
House while he was in the Neonatal
ICU, then moving to the Main House
Gratitude. That is one of the first words I think of as Spring
approaches. I’m grateful that the snowstorms are
finally over. I’m grateful for the flowers peeking
through the ground outside our House. I am
especially grateful for the incredible people, like you,
who support our families.
As you will see in this newsletter, we have much to be grateful for here
at the House. The Shango family, and so many like them, who finally can
take their child home to friends and family. The community members
who are hosting fundraisers to support the House. The amazing groups
who cook for our families. The community partnership that made our
Red Shoe Affair so successful…and the over 550 guests who made it
such a fun evening!
Finally, we are grateful to you, or donors and supporters, who help us provide
a “home away from home” every day for families of critically-ill children.
Thank you for all you do.

when he became more stable. His
older siblings stayed at home with
their grandparents and visited on
the weekends. The family stayed
for over a month at no cost. Had
they had to stay in a hotel, the
cost of the room alone would have
been over $2,000, and they would
have been much farther away
from baby Jacob.
“I never really knew what the
Ronald McDonald House Charities
did” Amanda said about the House,
“but after we were able to stay
there, I’ve told everyone I know.
It made such a difference, I can’t
even describe it.”
Jacob is now five years old, and
Amanda just signed him up for
Kindergarten which he is really
excited about. He is doing very well
and still comes back for check-ups
at Mott. When he does, the family
stops by to say hello and drop off
pop tabs and donations. They have
also attended the Red Shoe Affair
and are excited to support the
Ronald McDonald House Charities
of Ann Arbor.
“I tell everyone that they need to
support Ronald McDonald House
Charities. We are so glad you
are here!”

Bring a friend...Cathy Schramm and
Lynette Caldwell started
as neighbors twenty years
ago and became friends
through volunteerism at
their kids’ schools. Cathy’s
parents volunteered at the
Cleveland House every
Saturday night for eighteen
years. Their commitment
gave her the idea to
continue the family
tradition, and with all of
their kids now grown, she suggested to
Lynette they also continue their volunteer tradition at the House.
We are so glad they did!

Make a friend!Carole Banfield and Gayle
Bachman both started
volunteering a few years ago
on different shifts. They met
last year when one of them
needed to change her schedule,
and they ended up on the same
shift. Volunteering morphed into
a special friendship where they
share news about their grandkids
and offer support to each other
as widows. They both have expressed how grateful they are for the
other and the friendship that blossomed through their volunteerism.
We are grateful too!

4 Hope Away From Home | Spring/Summer 2018
On Saturday, April 21, over 525
guests stepped out in their red
shoes to enjoy an evening of fun
at the Big House in support of
Ronald McDonald House Charities
of Ann Arbor. From kicking field
goals with Ronald, to eating
delectable food and drinking
wonderful wine, a lively silent and
live auction and a dance filled
Afterglow with dueling pianos, the
evening was a wonderful success.
Thanks to our sponsors and
attendees, we exceeded our goal
and raised $430,000 to provide a
“home away from home” for over
1,200 families this year.

The Hero of the House Award was created in 2013 to honor individuals or groups who have provided outstanding support of the mission of RMHCAA and the families we serve. Awarded annually at the Red Shoe Affair event, prior awardees include Rosie and Alan Fellhauer, Rick Bossard, Jenny Carpenter and Sheri Belcher-Tribble.
This year the award was presented to two outstanding individuals. Alan Harris has been a Hero of the House for many years. As a long time member and past President of our Board of Directors, Alan has been a strong advocate and supporter of the Red Shoe Affair since its inception; it has raised over $1.5 million dollars for operations of both of our Houses in Ann Arbor. Alan and his wife Angela have also contributed greatly to fundraising campaigns and projects. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding the Board and staff through our significant growth period. Thank you Alan for all that you have done to support the families we serve.
Janet Shatusky has been a consistent and loyal volunteer for 33 years. She is the remaining member of “The Thursday Ladies,” who volunteered for years on Thursday afternoons helping keep the House in order, writing thousands of hand-written thank you notes, supporting families and staff and serving as wonderful ambassadors of RMHCAA. Jan can always be counted on to come to the House smiling and happy to support the families and operations in any way possible. We are so thankful for Jan and her continued volunteerism.
We are so grateful to be able to honor these long-time friends and supporters of our organization.

M & M Memorial Golf Outing
On December 30, 1993, a family
and community were changed
forever. A tragic car accident
killed cousins Megan and Melissa,
and left Melissa’s younger sister
Jessica severely injured. She spent
months at Michigan Medicine’s
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
recovering while her parents
stayed at the Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Ann
Arbor to be close to her.
In memory of Megan
and Melissa, who lived
in Pinconning, the local
community started the
M & M Memorial Golf
Outing in September,
1994. Family and friends
came together to raise
money to donate back
to the RMHCAA so
that other families could benefit
from the facility during their own
difficult times.
This September marks the 25th,
and final, M & M Memorial Golf
Outing. Jessie is now 30 years
old, and she and her family have
volunteered each year to raise over
$300,000 to directly support the
families served at the Mott and
Main Houses.
Jessie and her family
Thanks to RMHCAA, we
were able to stay right by her side. It was a home away
from home.
