UNITED NATIONS DAY October 24, 2017 Philadelphia Celebrating the “Global Citizen” & Award Ceremony UNA-USA Vision “A world in which humanity is spared the scourge of war, human rights are honored, the natural environment is protected and the United States is a constructive member of the United Nations for the well-being of all humankind." UNA-GP Mission The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia is dedicated to educating, inspiring and mobilizing our residents and political leaders to support the principles and vital work of the United Nations, strengthening the United Nations System, promoting constructive United States leadership in that system, and achieving the goals of the UN Charter. To realize this, the United States must manifest a greater commitment to internationalism, multilateral agreements, respect for international law, and more positive participation in the U.N. System. Our mission is to help achieve constructive U.S. leadership within a strengthened U.N. System by mobilizing the democratic, cosmopolitan capacity of the Philadelphia population. Fulfillment of our mission would enable the U.S. and other nations to redirect billions of dollars from spending on weapons and conflict handling to programs promoting conflict prevention, serving human needs and enhancing human potential. The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia gives the GlobalCitizen Award on occasion to Philadelphians who “identify with beingpart of an emerging world community, are empathic about the dignity ofall human beings, and whose actions contribute to building thiscommunity’s values and practices.” In the past, UNA-GP has honoredCraig Eisendrath for his work on nuclear arms and security, Trudy Rubinfor her work on reporting on foreign policy, and Dean Afaf Meleis(University of Pennsylvania) for her work establishing global health as atrack in nursing education. We consider John Smith’s leadership in theGlobal Philadelphia Association as a great example of such actions;especially his work – using the UNESCO global portfolio–towardsestablishing our city as a member of the Organization of World HeritageCities.
