The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia gives the GlobalCitizen Award on occasion to Philadelphians who “identify with beingpart of an emerging world community, are empathic about the dignity ofall human beings, and whose actions contribute to building thiscommunity’s values and practices.” In the past, UNA-GP has honoredCraig Eisendrath for his work on nuclear arms and security, Trudy Rubinfor her work on reporting on foreign policy, and Dean Afaf Meleis(University of Pennsylvania) for her work establishing global health as atrack in nursing education. We consider John Smith’s leadership in theGlobal Philadelphia Association as a great example of such actions;especially his work – using the UNESCO global portfolio–towardsestablishing our city as a member of the Organization of World HeritageCities.
