Why mess with success? After all, said GM spokes-
woman Leslie Rajewski, theChevy Equinox, last redesignedin model-year 2010, has enjoyedimproved sales every year forthe past half-decade.Chevrolet introduced the
2016 Equinox, a refreshed, con-temporized version of the com-pact SUV, at the Chicago AutoShow in mid-February.“We won’t be introducing an
all-new redesigned Equinox for atleast a couple more years,”Rajewski said, “so it made senseto do some refreshing to the ve-hicle.”Updates include new styling
with premium accents, newwheel designs and new availablesafety features, as well as a larger
color touchscreen radio and astandard rear-vision camera forentry-level models. The enhanced Equinox goes on
sale this fall, building on fiveyears of record sales in the high-ly competitive compact SUV seg-ment, Rajewski said. The newmodel, she added, strengthensChevrolet’s broad sport utilitylineup, which includes the Tra-verse, the all-new Trax small SUVand the redesigned 2015 Tahoeand Suburban full-size SUVs.“Chevrolet Equinox is a pillar
of the compact SUV segment, thanks to a value rooted in greatstyle, efficiency, safety and con-nectivity,” said Alan Batey, GMNorth America president.“The enhancements to the
2016 Equinox make a versatile
vehicle an even better choice, and demonstrate Chevrolet’scommitment to delivering thebroadest lineup of SUVs in theindustry.”Equinox sales in the U.S. in-
creased to 242,242 in 2014 – thefifth consecutive year of recordsales since the second-genera-tion launched as a 2010 model. It also held more than 9 per-
cent of the compact SUV market, said Rajewski, which surged 17.4percent in 2014 and accountedfor 15.5 percent of the total vehi-cle market – eclipsing midsizecars for the first time to becomethe auto industry’s largest seg-ment.The roster of new and updated
features available on the 2016Equinox includes:
• New trim lineup: L, LS, LTand LTZ, a streamlining of themodel lineup that eliminates the1LT and 2LT trims.• New front fascia and
chrome-accented dual-port grilledesign – including specificchrome trim on LT and LTZgrilles.
Dodge has put some muscle in-to its lineup with the return of“Shaker” muscle car models. The new models are designed
to deliver maximum perform-ance and the most Dodge mus-cle-car heritage in the brand’slineup, said Fiat Chrysler spokes-woman Kim Starnes. The new 2015 Challenger R/T
Shaker, R/T Plus Shaker and first-ever 392 HemiScat Pack Shakermodels, Starnes said, celebrate45 years of the functional “cold-air grabbing” hood scoop that“shakes” with the legendary
HemiV8 engine’s movement.“After selling out last year’s
Shaker model production in justfour days, our hardcore Chal-lenger customers demanded webring back the Shaker – plus offermore power and more perform-ance,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodgeand SRT Brands president andCEO.“We listened, and for 2015, the
new Dodge Challenger lineupoffers the legendary Shaker hoodexpanded to include our 485horsepower Hemi V8 deliveringup to 113 more horsepower than
last year, plus even more track-proven hardware and technology– a combination our enthusiastshave been waiting for.”New 2015 Dodge Challenger
R/T Shaker and R/T Plus Shakerare available for ordering now,Kuniskis said, with the high-per-formance 392 HemiScat PackShaker model available for cus-tomer orders in March. As the model name suggests,

General Motors North AmericaPresident Alan Batey used theAbraham Lincoln quote – “Goodthings may come to those whowait, but only the things left bythose who hustle” – to describewhere GM stands these days. His remarks came during a
speech to the Midwest Automo-tive Media Association Feb. 12.“Let me assure you, General
Motors takes that wise advicevery seriously,” Batey said. “Wearen’t waiting for ‘good things’ tohappen.“We are hustling to make a dif-
ference – in 2015 and beyond. And we are building from a trulysolid foundation, especially herein this market.”Chicago is vital for GM when
several facts are taken into con-sideration, Batey said. For exam-ple, he added, Chevrolet hasbeen the number-one-sellingbrand in Chicago for the last fouryears.“Silverado was the best-sell-
ingtruck in Chicago in 2014,” hesaid. “And one in five vehiclessold in Chicago is a compactSUV, which makes Chicago thethird-biggest market for compactSUVs in America.”That made the Chicago auto
show the perfect venue to intro-duce the restyled 2016 Chevrolet
Equinox, Batey said.“Another important reason to
‘hustle,’ in my opinion, is that2015 could be a great sales yearhere in North America,” Bateysaid. “Frankly, it is off to an im-pressive start.“Our official forecast for the
year is a range from 16.5 millionto 17 million. And with low inter-est rates, low fuel prices, and thewidest range of vehicles the mar-ket has ever seen, it’s possiblethe year could exceed every-one’s expectations.“If that happens, we intend to

What’s better than a car thathelps control spinouts once theyoccur? The answer at Ford Motor
Company is a car that can pre-dict a spin before it even begins. The new 2015 Ford Focus fea-
tures stability control technologythat actively determines when acar meets the conditions thatmay lead to a spin and inter-venes early to help prevent thedriver from losing control, saidFord spokesman Chris Terry. The feature – known as en-
hanced transitional stabilitytechnology – can help deliverbetter handling in highly dynam-ic driving maneuvers, Terry said.Information related to the car’s
speed, steering wheel position, turn rate of the steering wheel
and other input is considered todetermine when a skid is immi-nent. Once a risk is identified, braking is applied to individualwheels to help the driver main-tain control and continue on theintended path.“By recognizing scenarios that
can lead to a potential loss ofdriver control before oversteerhas developed, the enhancedtransitional stability system issetting the recovery process inmotion quicker than ever before– resulting in smoother, morerefined control,” said DavidMessih, Brake Controls manager,Ford North America.Enhanced transitional stability
technology is standard on thenew Focus, Messih said. It com-bines real-time data from sensors
throughout the car to anticipatea potential spin by 100 to 200 mil-liseconds.Terry said this technology was
first introduced with the 2014Ford Taurus.“It has migrated from the
Taurus,” Perry said.“This is good news for the new
Focus because it is Ford’s globalcar and all the versions of the Fo-cus around the world now hasthis technology.”The innovation came about
when engineers tried applying analgorithm already in use withFord’s Roll Stability Control tothe enhanced transitional stabili-ty technology, Messih said. Theresult is a stability control sys-tem that predicts potential spinsbefore they happen.
Engineers have been workinghard to ensure the new Focusfeels more connected to the roadand is even easier to drive, Terrysaid.Enhanced transitional stability
technology is just one of the newand improved chassis control in-novations developed by Ford en-gineers that lead to better driv-ing dynamics and handling onthe 2015 Ford Focus.

be ready for it with four strongbrand portfolios full of amazingvehicles for our customers.”Batey said evidence of GM’s
brand portfolio strength can beseen in the fact that Buick, GMCand Chevrolet took three of thefour top spots in the J.D. Power2014 Sales Satisfaction Index.Batey said the Buick brand has
proved to be especially success-ful.“Buick posted double-digit
sales gains in the United Stateslast year, on its way to selling 1.2million vehicles around theworld,” Batey said. “This is thesecond consecutive year thatBuick has set a global salesrecord. Momentum is definitelyon Buick’s side.“The Buick product portfolio
gets stronger every year. So doesits brand awareness.“And the momentum will con-
tinue to build here in NorthAmerica later this year when weintroduce the Cascada convert-ible, the first open-air Buick in 25years.”Batey noted that General Mo-
tor’s portfolio momentum doesnot begin and end with Buick.GMC saw sales in January in-crease by 20 percent over thesame time the previous year, hesaid, with the Sierra and theCanyon pickup trucks leadingthe way.Batey said Chevrolet’s “Find
New Roads” campaign embracesthe spirit of innovation that hasbeen part of Chevrolet’s DNAfrom the beginning.“And it will continue to guide
every aspect of our business, inevery place we do business, allaround the globe,” he said,“whether you’re talking aboutthe convenience and capabilityof 4G LTE or the technological in-novation of the Chevrolet Volt orthe unbelievable performance ofthe Corvette Z06.”And having a great portfolio,
Batey said, is only part of thesuccess equation, adding thatcustomer service, in an Internetera, counts more than ever.“At GM, our goal is to put the
customer in the center of every-thing we do in order to earn ‘cus-tomers for life,’” Batey said.“To help us, we’ve again
teamed with Disney, and put ourdealers and employees throughextensive Disney training. Disneyis known as the ‘happiest placeon earth’ for a reason.“And their track record for cus-
tomer loyalty is astounding – onany given day, 75 percent of peo-ple in Disney theme parks are re-turning visitors.
“We want to service our cus-tomers with that same mindsetthat builds toward enduring rela-tionships.“To achieve this, how they are
treated is essential, but so iswhere.“So another major contributor
to our success is the network ofChevrolet dealership facilities.”To that end, General Motors
and its Chevy dealers have em-barked on a campaign to updateand modernize their dealerships,Batey said.“The majority of our dealers
have been with Chevrolet formany decades – some as long as
a century,” Batey said.“So it’s essential they commit
to providing a clean, contem-porary environment to do busi-ness.“Our Chevy dealers across the
country have really stepped upand embraced this transforma-tion.“They, too, want to earn cus-
tomers for life, as much as we do.And this is the road to making ithappen.”And GM is looking at the future
to keep this momentum going,Batey said. That’s why the company is in-
vesting $200million at its Orion As-
sembly Plant to build the ChevyBolt electric vehicle, he said.“‘Find New Roads’ – that’s the
brand promise of Chevrolet,”Batey said.“And vehicles like the new Volt
and Bolt EV concept representthe innovation and ingenuitythat have run in the DNA ofthis brand since the very begin-ning.“Yes, good things may come to
those who wait . . . but we aren’twaiting.“We are going to take Lincoln’s
advice. We will be humble, stay hungry, and we’re going to‘hustle.’”

or that’s matched inside withpremium features on all trimlevels, complementing theEquinox’s enhanced technologyand functionality.”Many of these additions,
Rajewski said, allow Chevy toadd modern technology withouthaving to do a complete re-design.And the styling changes allow
the vehicle to have more of a GMglobal look. The new tail lights, for example, are done in thefashion of the new Camaro andCorvette. The 2016 Equinox seats five,

The latest Camaro is the kindof car that Tim Allen’s famous TVcharacter Tim the Toolman Tay-lor would love because it hasmore power and more perform-ance capabilities than ever, ac-cording to GM spokesman MonteDoran.“I think one of the interesting
things that has been true aboutthe Camaro,” said Doran, “is thatit has always reflected what’sbeen going on in the auto indus-try.”Chevrolet Camaro has tracked
the rise, fall and resurgence ofAmerican performance for nearly50 years, making it a bellwetherof horsepower, Doran said. But the Camaro’s performance
should be rated on more thanjust horsepower. It’s also been abellwether of the auto industry,Doran said.“From the day it was intro-
duced, the Camaro has been partof American culture and a reflec-tion of the state of the Americanperformance industry,” saidDean Guard, General Motors ex-ecutive director of global gaso-line engine engineering, whosefirst car was a 1982 Camaro witha 5.0L V8.“What has never changed was
the Camaro’s fun, attainable per-formance for a broad spectrumof customers, and the personalconnection it inspired with gen-erations of owners.”When the Camaro debuted in
1967, Doran said, it was in a bur-geoning personal coupe marketand at the height of the musclecar era.Entry-level models offered two
versions of Chevrolet’s stalwartinline-six engine, with a minimumof 140 horsepower and 220 lb.-ft.of torque.Higher-performing models
were available with a smorgas-bord of V8 engines, ranging from200 horsepower in the 307-cubic-inch Small Block to the 375-horsepower 396 Big Block.Sixty-nine special-option COPO
Camaros were built with 427-cubic-inch engines.Intended for Stock and Super
Stock drag racing classes, theirrespective 425- and 430-horse-power ratings were widely be-lieved to be underestimated. But times change, and the per-
formance of the Camaro reflect-ed those changes, Doran said. This can be seen in the second-generation iteration of the vehi-cle, which was introduced in1970.“If you look at the 1970s, it was
a transformative period in theauto industry,” Doran said.“You couldn’t get by just on
horsepower.“The industry had to adapt to
a changing landscape in whichcars were required to meet newmileage and emissions stan-dards.”And the Camaro’s second gen-
eration occurred during thattumultuous time, Doran said. With things like unleaded fuel forlower emissions – and an in-
creased focus on fuel economy inresponse to Arab oil embargoesthat led to lines at gasoline sta-tions – the Camaro had tochange. As engineers worked to meet
these new requirements, the in-dustry saw dramatic reductionsin engine compression, horse-power and torque.Camaro output peaked in 1970,
with 375 hp and 415 lb.-ft., but by1975 the most powerful V8 modeloffered only 155 hp. The Camarowouldn’t see more than 200horsepower again until the mid-1980s.The Big Block engine family
was dropped after 1972, whilethe venerable inline-six enginewas replaced by more modernV6 designs in 1980.The Small Block was the only
engine family to last through theentire second generation, rang-ing from a high of 360 horsepow-er for the 1970 Z28 to 115 horse-power by the mid- and late-1970s.But nothing is forever, and
with the third generation – 1982to 1992 – the Camaro saw the in-troduction of new technologies, each progressively improvingoutput and performance, Doransaid. For the first time, the Camaro
was offered with a four-cylinderengine.Between 1982 and 1986, the
2.5L inline-4 produced 88 to 92horsepower, depending onwhether it was fitted with a car-buretor or a new electronicallycontrolled fuel injection sys-tem.Fuel injection also spread to
the V6 and V8 engine families, en-abling engineers to balance effi-ciency with greater performance.
Early editions used ThrottleBody Injection (TBI) and, later, the highest-performing modelsof the 305 and 350 enginesfeatured Tuned Port Injection(TPI).In 1990, the Camaro 350 TPI
engine peaked at 245 hp and345 lb.-ft. of torque – making itthe most potent Camaro since1973.By the time the fourth genera-

DETROIT (AP) – Sport utilityvehicles are unstoppable – andautomakers hope to cash in onthe boom with some updatedmodels coming out of this year’sChicago Auto Show.
One out of every three newvehicles Americans bought lastyear was an SUV, according toKelley Blue Book. SUV sales rose12 percent to more than 5.5 mil-lion. That was double the pace ofthe industry as a whole.
Strong demand is likely to con-tinue this year, says JesseToprak, president of Toprak Con-sulting Group. SUV sales may notsee double-digit growth, sinceoverall sales are expected toslow as the U.S. market nears apeak of 17 million vehicles. ButSUVs should still outpace salesof cars, Toprak says.
Small SUVs like the HondaCR-V have been the fastest-grow-ing segment in the market for thelast three years. They appeal toboth young families and agingBaby Boomers. Low interestrates, easing credit standardsand new versions of popularmodels have also fueled demand.
More recently, low gas priceshelped boost sales of biggerSUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoeand Lincoln Navigator. Last June, when gas prices peaked at $3.76per gallon, SUV sales made up 33percent of new vehicle sales, while small cars made up 20 per-cent, according to Ward’s AutoIn-foBank.
By December, when gas priceshad fallen to $2.63, SUV marketshare rose to 35 percent, whilesmall cars fell to 16 percent.
One of the SUVs that debutedat the Chicago show was a re-freshed Chevrolet Equinox smallSUV. It’s the first update to theEquinox since it went on sale in
2010, and it should help the pop-ular SUV compete with newerrivals until it gets an expectedredesign in late 2017.
The 2016 Equinox will have alarger, handsomer, chrome-ac-cented grille and upgraded pro-jector-beam headlamps; on high-er trim levels, the headlamps areLEDs.
A rear-view camera will bestandard on all models. Blindspot detection and cross-trafficalert are new options. Inside, there’s a new standard seven-inch screen and an updated in-strument panel.
The Equinox has been a con-sistently strong seller despite itsadvancing age. Last year, Equi-nox sales rose 2 percent to242,242, making it the fourth-bestseller in the crowded small SUVmarket behind the Honda CR-V,Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.The 2016 Equinox goes on salethis fall.
Analyst: A Strong DemandFor SUVs Likely to Continue

Longtime Detroit-area autodealer Martin J. “Hoot” McIner-ney died Monday, Feb. 16.A funeral Mass was celebrated
on Friday, Feb. 20, at St. Hugo ofthe Hills Church in BloomfieldHills.Mr. McInerney was born Jan.
23, 1929, the middle son of Irishimmigrants. His first job in thecar business – at age 7 – was at adealership on the east side of De-troit in 1936. He was paid 50cents a week. Young Hoot keptthe coal furnace stoked, sweptthe floor and ran errands.Looking back recently on that
time in his life, Mr. McInerneysaid, “I remember bread lines. You never forget how vital it wasto hold a job, any job.“My father was a mechanic for
the Department of Street Rail-ways, and there were five chil-dren in the family. Anybody wholived through that era has a feel-ing of insecurity. I’ll tell you whatkeeps me going is fear – fear ofgoing broke.”Mr. McInerney’s friend, the late
WJR radio personality J.P. Mc-Carthy, once said, “Hoot is prob-ably the original Horatio Alger. He started from absolute groundzero and became the capitalistsuccess story.”Another friend, Thomas Daily,
said, “Hoot’s a hometown prod-uct who made it the hard way.(Hoot) grew up in an era whenyour efforts were rewardeddirectly by how good you were atwhat you did, and he made uphis mind to be the best.”Mr. McInerney had said he got
his name from a mechanic heworked with. “I’m Irish. I musthave looked Scottish, (so) hecalled me Hoot. My nicknamewas Junior as a kid, but oncepeople knew me as Hoot, itstuck.”Mr. McInerney graduated from
Southeastern High School in
1946, and took a job at a car deal-ership. In 1950, during theKorean War, he did a stint in theMarine Corps, an experience thatwould help him in the car busi-ness.“In the Corps, you’re a Marine
first,” Mr. McInerney had said,“and your specialty – mechanic, cook – is second. That’s how youshould be in an automobile deal-ership. Everybody’s a salesper-son.”In 1963, Mr. McInerney bought
his first dealership, NorthlandChrysler Plymouth. In time, he added a Dodge
dealership, Lincoln-Mercury,Ford and Cadillac stores, makinghim one of the first mega-dealersin the country.Lee Iacocca, a close friend of
his, once said, “Hoot’s a closer,no question. He’s the ultimatesales guy, and someone that Iwas glad to have on our team.”When he wasn’t selling cars,
Mr. McInerney was raising mon-ey for charity. His brother Jack said, “Hoot
was always giving money to: Fo-cus Hope, the Capuchin SoupKitchen, Gleaners, there’s literal-ly dozens of charities he’stouched.”

tion Camaro – 1993-2002 – camealong, the vehicle had a stream-lined powertrain lineup with asingle V6 and Small Block V8offered in each model year. The base engine evolved
from a 160-horsepower versionof the 3.4L V6 to a 200-horsepow-er version of the renowned 3.8LV6.The lightweight, compact pow-
erhouse offered performancecomparable to most of theThird Generation Camaro V8models.The Small Block V8 was avail-
able with up to 305 horsepowerin the 1996-97 Camaro SS.An all-new, Gen III “LS1” Small
Block V8 was available in the1998 Camaro, delivering 305 hpand 335 lb.-ft. of torque, makingthe Camaro SS and Z28 modelsworthy rivals for anything fromthe muscle car era.But all good things must come
to an end, and so it was with theCamaro, which went out of pro-duction in 2002.But you also can’t keep a good
car down, and the fifth genera-tion – 2010-present – saw the carreturn with more standardhorsepower than ever – morethan 300 horsepower from asophisticated DOHC V6, Doransaid.By 2012, the Camaro V6 had in-
creased to 323 hp, and 278 lb.-ft.of torque, while enabling up to30 guilt-free miles per gallon onthe highway. The Camaro’s new, 6.2L Gen IV
Small Block V8 was rated at 426horsepower in SS models withthe manual transmission – morethan any regular-productionSmall Block or Big Block enginefrom the muscle car era andrivaling the advertised output ofthe special-order COPO 427 en-gines from 1969.The Camaro ZL1’s introduc-
tion in 2012 reset the bar forhorsepower and torque, deliver-ing a staggering 580 horsepowerand 556 lb.-ft. from a super-charged version of the 6.2L GenIII Small Block. It remains the most powerful
production engine in the longand successful Camaro history,Doran said.In 2014, the Camaro Z/28 deliv-
ered the first factory-installed427-cubic-inch engine since thelegendary COPO models. The naturally aspirated 7.0L
engine was rated at 505 horse-power and 481 lb.-ft. of torque, helping the Camaro Z/28 powerits way to Motor Trend’s 2014Best Driver’s Car award – thefirst American-brand car to re-ceive it.And this technology has paid
off in terms of sales, Doran said. The Camaro became the UnitedStates’ best-selling performancecar in 2010, taking the title awayfrom the Mustang. In 2014, GM sold 86,297
Camaros – proof that powerand performance create prosper-ity.“What I like is that many of
these recent sales are conquestsales,” Doran said.“The Camaro is bringing peo-
ple to Chevy dealerships whowould have otherwise never setfoot there.”The fifth-generation Camaro is
based on GM’s Zeta platform, which is the company’s full-sizerear-wheel-drive platform thatwas developed by GM’s Aus-tralian subsidiary Holden. The Zeta platform is also
called GM’s Global RWD Archi-tecture.The Camaro is the only North
American-produced vehicle thatuses this platform, but theChevrolet SS, built in Australiaand imported to the North Amer-ican market, uses it.
