Unit 5: Passion Week to the Ascension

NT5.4 The Last Supper

Scripture: Matthew 26:17-30; Mark 14:12-31; Luke 22:7-39; John 13: 1-17

Lesson Goal: We will learn how Jesus gave to us the Last Supper as a way to remember His death on

the cross for us. Introduction: This is the fourth lesson in Unit 5: The Passion Week--the last week of Jesus' life here on earth. This lesson is about what happened on the night before Jesus was crucified Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples. During this meal Jesus taught the disciples many important things about his return to heaven. The events of the Passion Week are told to us in the first four books of the New Testament. These books are called the Gospels. The word Gospel means the "Good News about Jesus." They tell the story of the Life of Christ while he lived here on earth. Let's say the names of the Gospels together--Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Attention Getter: “Dinner Invitation” How many of you like to eat dinner? I know I like to eat! What are your favorite foods? Is it macaroni and cheese, pizza, hot dogs or maybe hamburgers? What if I invited you to my house for dinner but I didn’t tell you how to get there. Could you come? No, you couldn't unless I gave you the address or directions on how to get to my house. When you want to go somewhere, it’s important to know the way, isn’t it? Today we are going to learn about a very special meal that Jesus had with his disciples. During the meal Jesus told his disciples that he was going away to heaven. He wanted them and us to know the way to His home in heaven

Opening Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, I pray that you will help us to listen to Holy Spirit so that we will not miss a single lesson that You want to teach us. Help us to understand the importance of the Last Supper and how much You loved us to go through the horrible, painful death on the cross for our sins. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Memory Verse: John 14: 6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except

through me.”

Jesus and his disciples had come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover Feast. This was the night that the Jews remembered how God had freed them from slavery in Egypt. The feast remembered the night that the Israelites had put blood over their doorposts so that the death angel would pass over them. God made the pharaoh let them leave when all the first born sons of the Egyptians died. This feast was also a picture of how Jesus would die on the cross and his death would set all men free from their sins.

When the day of the Passover celebration arrived, Jesus sent Peter and John to find a place to prepare their Passover meal. "As soon as you enter Jerusalem, you will see a man carrying a pitcher of water," He told them. "Follow Him into the house he enters. The master of the house will show you to an upper room. Prepare the meal for us there."

When Peter and John came to Jerusalem they did see a man carrying a pitcher of water just as Jesus had said. This was unusual in that usually only women carried water for their homes. They followed the man and he led them to a house.

Peter and John told the owner of the house, "Our Teacher would like you to show the guest room where He can eat the Passover meal with his disciples." The owner showed them into a large upper room. Peter and

John began to prepare the Passover meal. They had to buy and cook the lamb as well as unleavened bread, bitter herbs, wine, and other special foods.

While Peter and John were preparing the Passover meal, another disciple named Judas had also gone to Jerusalem. Judas headed off to find the Chief Priests. He was tempted by Satan to betray Jesus. "How much will you pay me to get Jesus into your hands?" He asked. Judas was a traitor to Jesus! He loved money more than God. The Jewish leaders gave Judas thirty silver coins to tell them where Jesus was so they could arrest him. From that time on Judas watched for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them. Perhaps he thought he might betray Jesus while he was eating the Passover meal.

Meanwhile everything was ready for the Passover meal. It was late at night when Jesus and the disciples arrived. There were no servants to wash their feet. So Jesus poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with a towel. Jesus wanted to use this as a way to teach His disciples that they should be willing to serve others.

Peter said to Him, "Master you shouldn't be washing our feet like this!" Jesus replied, "You don't understand now why I am doing it, some day you will."

"No," Peter protested, "You shall never wash my feet!"

"But if I don't you can have no part with me," Jesus replied.

Peter exclaimed, "Then wash my hands and head as well--not just my feet!"

Then Jesus told him, "I have done the work of a servant so that you will know how to treat each other. You must be willing to be servants to one another."

Jesus knew that Judas was planning to betray him but He still washed his feet, too. How hard that must have been to love someone who was plotting to kill him!

At the time to celebrate the Passover they all sat down. Jesus said, "I have looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins." Jesus knew that the time for Him had come to die on the cross for the sins of the world. He had some important things to tell the disciples to help them get ready for His death and resurrection.

While they were eating, Jesus announced, "One of you will betray me."

They were very sad and began to say to Him one after the other, "Surely you don't mean me, Lord?"

Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. Woe to that man. It would be better for him if he had not been born." Then Jesus gave the bread to Judas.

Judas, who was near Jesus, asked, "Surely you don't men me?"

Jesus answered, "You have said so." It was then that Judas knew that Jesus was aware of what he was planning to do. Jesus then told Judas, "What you are to do, do quickly." Judas got up and left the room. The others thought Jesus had told Judas to give something to the poor. But that was NOT what Judas was doing. He was going to tell Jesus' enemies where they could arrest Him.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." Jesus was saying that His body would die or be broken on the cross.

Then He took a cup of wine and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it all of you. This is the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I will not drink wine again until I drink it with you in my Father's kingdom," Jesus was saying that His blood that was going to be shed on the cross and that it would pay for the forgiveness of our sins.

Then Jesus told His disciples, "“I will be with you only a little longer…where I am going, you cannot come. A new command I give you: Love one another. Everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."

When the disciples heard that Jesus was going away they were afraid. Finally Peter said, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus explained He was going to prepare a place for them in heaven.

Then Jesus began telling the disciples something they had never heard before. He told them about heaven—His father’s house! Jesus said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions or rooms or places to live. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare or make ready a place for you. I will come back and take you to be with Me.”

What a wonderful promise! One day Jesus will come again from Heaven. The sky will open and we will see Him in the clouds. All those who have received Him as their own personal Savior will meet Him in the air! Then we will be with Him forever and ever. What a happy thought Jesus was leaving with His disciples.

But Thomas, one of the disciples could not understand. “Lord,” he said to Jesus, “we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Then Jesus looked at Thomas and said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me.” Jesus was telling the disciples the way to go to heaven! Jesus is the Way because He is both God and man. He came to earth to show us what God is like. Jesus came to die on the cross to pay for our sins so we would have a way to go to heaven.

Then Jesus promised them that God was going to send the Holy Spirit to help and comfort them. Jesus also prayed for His disciples.

Peter refused to be parted from Jesus. "Lord I am ready to go with you to prison and to death," he declared.

Jesus answered, "Peter before the rooster crows today you will deny me three times. You will say that you do not even know me!" Peter could not believe that he would do such a thing.

After the Passover supper Jesus and his disciples sang a hymn and then left the building. They headed to a place called the Garden of Gethsemane.

Review Questions/ Game: “Hidden Squares” Preparation: Cut out twelve 3” squares from paper. (Sticky notes work well for this game.) Number six of them 1 to 6 with one number on one side of the square. (Use the sticky side of the notes.) Then number the remaining paper squares in negative numbers from -1 to -6. (Use sticky side.) Turn all the paper squares over so the blank sides are facing up. (Put sticky notes on white board or wall.) Procedure: To play the game, divide the children into two teams. One will be the X’s and one will be the O’s. Have each take turns answering questions. When a child answers a question correctly, have him point to a square. Write his team’s mark on the top of the square but leave it turned over. At the end of the game separate the squares by team and then turn them over to count the points, remembering to subtract the negative values from the positive. You may be surprised who wins! Discuss each of the following questions with the class.

1. What event did the Passover Feast remember in Jewish history? (The feast was a remembrance of the night that the death angel passed over the firstborn whose families had put blood over the doorpost. The Egyptian firstborn died and the Pharaoh let Israel leave.)

2. When Jesus sent Peter and John off to find a place for them to have the Passover meal, what was the unusual way they found the upper room? (They followed a man carrying a pitcher of water to a guest room.)

12. What did the disciples think that Judas was doing when he left? (The others thought Jesus had told Judas to give something to the poor.)

13. What did Jesus do during the Last Supper that we still repeat today? (Jesus instituted the “Lord’s Supper.” We do it in remembrance of what He did for us on the cross.)

14. What did Jesus do before they ate? (Gave thanks.) 15. What did Jesus call the bread that He served? (His body broken for us.) 16. What did Jesus call the wine that He served? (His blood, shed for us.) 17. What does it mean when we say Jesus is the "lamb of God”? (Because He took our place on the

cross. We deserve to die, but His blood was shed for us so we don’t have to die an eternal death. We can now live forever in the presence of God.)

18. What did the disciples say when Jesus said he was going away? (When the disciples heard that Jesus was going away they were afraid. Finally Peter said, "Lord, where are you going?")

26. Can you think of any way that you might betray the Lord Jesus? (By keeping our faith in Him a secret when we’re with our worldly friends.

27. What is our memory verse? John 14: 6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Bible Memory Verse Activity: “Cross Hatch” Say: Our memory verse is John 14: 6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Have children locate the verse in the Bible. Read the verse aloud with children several times. Say: “Jesus says that He is the only Way to God the Father. As the way, Jesus is our path to the Father. As the truth He is the reality of all of God’s promises. As the life He joins his divine life to ours, both now and for eternity.” Preparation: Print a copy of the memory verse "crosspatch" for each child. See if they can "see" the words of Jesus. Procedure: Have students hold the paper between eye and nose at arm’s length and look across. Start with Side 1 and then go to Side 2. The crosshatch should reveal the words of the verse.

Group Learning Activity: “Objects in Bag” Review (Grades K-2) Preparation: Bring a bag and fill it with objects from the lesson: towel, small basin, grapes, crackers or matzo, grape juice, small cups. Procedure: Let each child take one item out of the bag and then explain what that item had to do with the lesson today.

Towel and basin: Jesus washed the disciples’ feet and then dried them with a towel. He wanted the disciples to know that if was willing to serve others that they should serve others, too.

Grape juice or fresh wine: The drink served at the Passover meal was fresh grape juice or wine. The wine or grape juice was a picture of the blood that Jesus was going to shed on the cross for the sins of people. He was punished for what we did that was wrong. He was the innocent one. We were the guilty ones.

Crackers or matzo: Jesus’ used the bread to be a picture of His body that was going to be “broken” on the cross. Jesus loved us so much that He was willing to die for us.

Group Learning Activity: “Passover Celebration” (Grades 2-5) Preparation: Before class tape a long strip of paper above the door. You will need red tempera paint and a brush. Gather the ingredients and let the children taste foods from the Passover meal. You can use horseradish for bitter herbs, grape juice for the wine, and pita bread for the unleavened bread. You can purchase very thinly sliced lamb at a butcher or grocery deli. Recline and eat your meal at a low table. Say: “In our lesson Jesus and his disciples were celebrating the Passover Meal. This meal was a reminder of what event in the Old Testament? (The feast was a remembrance of the night that the death angel passed over the firstborn whose families had put blood over the doorpost. The Egyptian firstborn died and the Pharaoh let Israel leave.)Today we are going to taste some foods from the Passover meal and learn the meaning of these symbols of Jesus’ death and resurrection.” Procedure: Take a brush and paint the paper red above the door and along the sides of the door posts. Say: “Does anyone remember a story in the Old Testament that tells about painting the top and sides of the front door of your house with something red?” (Quickly relate the story of the Pharaoh of Egypt who kept the people of God as slaves. God wanted the Pharaoh to let the people go to their own land but he would not let them. God’s final warning was that all of the firstborn children and animals would die unless one spec ial thing was done. They had to put lamb’s blood over the door and everyone would be safe. The people that believed God did this and their children and animals were safe. After this, the Pharaoh let the people of God go. ) “God wanted the people to always remember what he had done. Today we are going to learn about the special meal that the people of God ate to remember the time God saved them.” Have one of the children look up and read Romans 15:4 “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope”. Say: “This verse tells us that scripture or the Bible was written so we could know about God and His people who lived in the past. The stories and lessons that we learn in the Bible have a purpose. They will help us learn to deal with the problems that we face and encourage us to trust in God. Reading scripture not only teaches us important lesson but encourages us to be faithful to God. What lessons have you learned from the Old Testament?” (God told us that He was going to send His Son Jesus to be our Savior. God loves us and will never leave us. God wants what is best for us and is wants to guide us in the right path that we should go.)

Say” “One of the important festivals that God commanded His people to have was the Passover Feast. Today we are going to learn about the Passover Feast and eat some of the foods that were served at this meal. We will also what their meaning was for us today.” Have children locate and read Leviticus 23:4-8 “These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Festival of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. For seven days present a food offering to the Lord. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’” The Passover lamb was sacrificed at a specific time on the fourteenth day of the first month on the Jewish calendar. (This was the day of the first Passover). In this case it was on Thursday of Passion Week. Say: The first Passover was celebrated hundreds and hundreds of years earlier on the last night that the Jews were captive in Egypt (Exodus 12). They Jews that followed God’s instructions and placed lamb’s blood on their doorposts were able to celebrate the meal safely inside their homes while the Angel of Death passed over them. Jews continued to celebrate the Passover as a reminder of God’s salvation. They even celebrate it today. Usually families ate the meal together. Have students located Luke 22: 1-6 and read it aloud. Say: “In this case Jesus celebrated it with his disciples. It seems that Jesus made plans ahead of time for the place where the meal was to be eaten. He had not told them where that would be. Judas had already been plotting to betray Jesus so perhaps this is why Jesus did not disclose the location. Judas could have reported the place if he had known where it was.” Have students read Luke 22:7-22 aloud. Say: “In this passage Jesus tells two disciples Peter and John to prepare the Passover feast. Let’s name the foods that we see in the passage and talk about their meaning.”

Unleavened bread: Flat bread made without yeast. Originally this was eaten in the Passover because the Jews left Egypt so quickly that the bread did not have time to rise. The unleavened bread was to be eaten at specific times during the meal. The bread dough was pricked or pierced with a fork to make sure there were no air bubbles in it before baking on a rack. The rack left “stripes” on the bottom of the bread. Jesus said that He was the bread of life. He was pierced for our transgressions…by His stripes (wounds) we are healed. Have students read Isaiah 53:5.

Lamb: Killed at sundown and roasted. The blood of the lamb was to be given to the priest to pour on the altar. They were to eat the whole lamb during the meal. The blood of the lamb was to be spread over the top and sides of the door. The top and sides of the door form the shape of the cross which was a picture of Jesus’ death on the cross and his blood cleanses us from our sin. Have students read Romans 3:25.

Bitter herbs: (horseradish) The herbs were eaten to remind the Jews of the bitter times in Egypt. Jesus was despised and rejected; a man of suffering, and He suffer bitterly on the cross for our sins. Read Isaiah 53:3-4.

Wine: The wine or grape juice was to be drunk at four specific times in the meal. The wine was to remind the people of the lamb that had to die in order that the sins of the people would be forgiven. Have students read Matthew 26:23-30. It was customary to take a piece of bread (or a piece of meat wrapped in bread) and dip it into bowl of sauce (made of stewed fruit) on the table. Perhaps Judas was in the process of dipping the bread when Jesus said that someone who was dipping bread with him would betray him. Eating with someone in this culture was reaffirming friendship. This made Judas’ betrayal even more awful.

Communion: Jesus instituted a new feast to replace the Passover. The new meaning was to remember His death, burial, and resurrection. We are to eat unleavened bread to remember the

body of Christ broken on the cross. We are to drink the grape juice to remember His blood that was shed on the cross for our sins. Read 1 Corinthians 11: 25-28 aloud.

Craft Activity: “Last Supper Jig Saw Puzzle” (Grades K-2) Preparation: Print the picture of the Last Supper Jig Saw puzzle on poster board. Procedure: Have children use crayons or markers to color the picture. Cut the picture apart on the solid lines. Have children put the puzzle together. Provide envelopes to each child to hold their puzzle pieces. Say: “This picture is of Jesus and the disciples as they celebrated the Passover meal. Who are the disciples pictured in the puzzle? (Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Thaddeus, Bartholomew, Thomas, James the Lesser, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot) Who fixed the Passover Meal? (John and Peter) Who would betray Jesus? (Judas) What did Jesus do with the bread and cup? (He used them to institute a new promise about his death, burial, and resurrection and the promise of eternal life.) Where did the Last Supper occur? (In an upper room) What did the disciples and Jesus do after the Passover meal was over? (They sang a hymn and went to the Garden of Gethsemane.)

Craft Learning Activity: “Bread of Life Key Chain” (Grades K-5) Preparation: You will need self-drying clay, white craft foam, hole-puncher, marking pens, scissors, key chain loop, piece of wool or string. Say: “During His ministry Jesus compared Himself to bread. John 6:35 “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” People eat bread to satisfy physical hunger. We can only satisfy our spiritual hunger by having a right relationship with Jesus. He is the one who brings eternal life. At the Last Supper Jesus compared His body to the Passover bread. Matthew 26:26 “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body.” We are going to make a key chain that will remind us of this important symbol of His death on the cross and the way of salvation. Procedure: Distribute a lump of self-drying clay to each student. Have children shape their clay dough into a slice or loaf of bread. Use a straw to poke a hole in the bread sculpture. Size of the hole should be sufficient to easily thread a ribbon or wool string through. Allow clay sculpture to dry thoroughly. Have children cut out a rectangle of white craft foam in the shape of a slice of bread. You may want to provide a template or pattern for students to draw around to form the shape more easily. Have students print the words: “Jesus is the Bread of Life” on the piece of craft foam. Put a piece of ribbon or string through the keychain loop, the craft foam tag and the clay loaf.

Craft Learning Activity: “Last Supper Table” (Grades K-3) Preparation: You will need a small cardboard box for each student. Cereal boxes cut into two boxes work well. You will need brown wrapping paper, scissors, tape, glue, and colored markers. Procedure: Distribute small boxes or gift boxes one per student. Have students use brown wrapping paper to cover the boxes. Have children fold white drawing paper accordion style and cut out paper chain dolls (twelve boys). (An 8 ½” X 11” paper folded crosswise will make five paper dolls.) Use more sheets of paper until the child is able to make twelve disciples plus one for Jesus. Students should use scissors to cut out the paper chain men. Use marking pens to draw in the details of the disciples and Jesus. Have students

use glue to attach the paper doll chain to the side of the table (see picture). Add plates and bowls and other food items to the table by drawing the items with the colored marking pens. Craft Learning Activity: “Washing Feet” (Grades K-3) Preparation: You will need brown and blue poster paint, large white drawing paper, sponges, soap and water, clean wipes, sponge brushes, scissors, Styrofoam bowls, and slips of paper with the printed verse of John 13:15. “

I have

set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” Say: “In our lesson today Jesus washed the disciples’ feet just before they ate Passover meal. Jesus wanted the disciples to know that they should be willing to serve others like He served them. We are going to make some footprint bowls to help us remember this story.” Procedure: Have children remove their shoes and socks. Using a sponge filled with brown poster paint to wipe the bottoms of their feet. You can also use sponge brushes to “paint” the soles of their feet. Have children step onto a large white drawing paper to make foot prints. Use clean wipes or sponges with soap and water to clean the bottoms of their feet. Use paper towels to dry feet. Allow the footprints to dry before cutting around the outside edge with scissors. Have students paint the inside of the bowl with blue paint to represent the water. Attach the printed slips of paper with the verse to the footprints and then glue the footprints to the edges of the bowl.

Craft Learning Activity: “Bubble Bath” (Grades K-5) Preparation: You will need a small plastic bottle with a lid. You can use clear plastic empty water bottles with screw on caps. Other supplies include: shampoo or body wash, glycerin, and almond oil, ribbon or string and self-adhesive labels. Say: “Jesus washed His disciples’ feet at the Last Supper as a way to show His humility and love for them. The washing of feet was an example of how we are to be willing to serve others unselfishly. Procedure: Mix 1 cup shampoo or body wash and 3/4 cup of water in a mixing bowl. Stir together 1 tsp. glycerin and 2 cups almond oil in a separate mixing bowl. Glycerin is a thick liquid used as a skin softener and moisturizer in many skin care products. Find it in the health and beauty section of your local drug store. Pour the soap mixture into the almond oil mixture, slowly stirring as you pour. Transfer the mixture into a reusable plastic bottle to store it. You can add food coloring or essential oils if desired. Shake up the ingredients to combine them. When you're ready to use the bubble bath, pour 1 to 2 tbsp. into running bath water. Have students decorate the bubble bath bottle with stickers or permanent colored markers. Tie a ribbon or colorful yarn around the lid. Let the children write a Last Supper Bible verse on self-adhesive mailing labels. Laminate the labels if desired and tape it to the bottle. John 13:14-17 “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

Craft Learning Activity: “Last Supper Plate” (Grades K-3) Preparation: You will need a large sheet of construction paper 12” X 18” for background, 8 or 10” ” paper plate, brown construction paper, a printed outline of the paper goblet, glue, scissors, and colored marking pens. Procedure: Have children draw a loaf of bread on brown construction paper. Use the printed template as a pattern to draw around if desired. Encourage them to have a piece of bread broken off to the side of the plate to represent Jesus’ body being broken on the cross. Have children color the wine goblet with purple grape juice. Glue the paper plate to the background construction paper “placemat”. Decorate the rim of the paper plate with designs or items or people from the Last Supper. Examples would be Jesus, the disciples, bread, wine, basin of water, etc. Have students cut out the cup and glue to the placemat. Add a strip of self-adhesive paper or large mailing label for children to write the memory verse John 14: 6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Or Luke 22:17-20 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Life Application Challenge: “Communion” Preparation: Have an elder or deacon come to your class and provide the students with communion. Be sure to have him read the scripture about the bread and cup and explain the purpose of communion as a way to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Procedure: Encourage children to think about asking Jesus to be their Savior. Tell them to talk to their parents or you if they have questions.
