will be small and powdery

and won’t stick together. We call

this dry snow. The snowflakes that form wet snow will have fallen through tem-

As they fall, the snowflakes melt slightly around the edges and

stick together to form large, heavy flakes. This sticks together easily and is the best for a snowball

TWITTERVERSE

I don’t tweet. I know, I’m being left in the digital dust and the fu-ture is moving away from me at the speed of Kardashian news. The President elect, who seems to think he’s president already, com-municates primarily by tweetspeak. Short and to the point. Mostly to the Point. It’s a new paradigm for governing in this post-truth world we now live in.

Makes sense, I guess, if most of us citizens are capable of not much more than a text message, fat thumbs flying on tiny keyboards, words distilled to the fewest letters possible, paragraphs obsolete. Our attention spans are nicely compatible with the complexity of tweets these days and I don’t expect to see that expanding any-time in the near future. Can’t imagine why politics is reduced to soundbites and 30 second commercials.

We used to call this, at least where I come from, shallow thinking. These days it passes for research. But I know, I know, I’m just being curmudgeonly. The modern world moves a little too fast to stop and smell the newspaper ink. We don’t have the luxury of time anymore, not when we have to respond to text messages and up-date our Facebook page. Read a novel? Fat chance, Hemingway. Read a non-fiction book? Give me a break. Read beyond the first paragraph of a Yahoo news feed? Why bother?

No, I suspect we’ll actually shorten those attention spans a little more before I leave this mortal coil. Not sure how much shorter we can make them, but if watching friends text messaging while they’re in a conversation with me is any indication, I’d say there’s still some wiggle room. Just have to avoid those conversations with me to do it. I’ll sure miss those engaging discussions.

DEAR CRACKERS OF CRAB

I have been writing for you nearly three years. I hope that by read-ing about my zany life that you’ve been inspired to add fun to your own life. After all, life is what we make of it—it may as well be fun.I’ve just accepted a full-time job offer with a local newspaper. It’ll be fascinating to write about the city’s inner workings for the news. Plus it’ll boost Social Security payments when retirement rolls around. I’ll be too busy to regularly write this column so I’ll say so long for now.

Thanks for reading my musings and especially to you who checked out my website’s longer pieces, photos and links. We can still keep in touch: I’ll blog sporadically. Hit the subscribe button at peggy-wendel.com and you’ll get an email when I post.

I’ll have odd tidbits to tell you about my original Swingnuts songs. I’ll also have tips on flying without ID— not recommended but if you forget your wallet, it can be done . . . Nearly had to walk home from Texas! Find out how not to be left behind.

I’ll close with a quote from “The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Do tell me. Post a comment on my blog. I’d love to hear from you. And catch the Swingnuts when you can. We’re a lot of fun.

KIDS CHRISTMAS CRAFT: TISSUE PAPER WREATH

The whole family will want to get in on the fun when it comes time to make these simple tissue paper wreaths! All it takes are a few basic supplies and a little bit of patience to create your own per-sonalized Christmas wreath – add pom poms, sequins or glitter for a festive finishing touch! You will need: Circular wreath form – cut from recycled cereal box or a paper plate; Lots and LOTS of green tissue paper squares; White glue; Paint brush; Pencil with eraser; Embellishments – pom poms, sequins, etc. (optional); Ribbon or string for hangingHow to Make a Tissue Paper Wreath: 1. Use the paintbrush to spread a small amount of white glue on to a section of the wreath (work on about 1/6 of the wreath at a time). Use the eraser end of the pencil to shape each square of tissue paper as shown. 2. Use the eraser to help you place your tissue paper squares on to the wreath form, and continue to work section by section until the entire wreath form is full and covered. 3. Add optional embellish-ments – pom poms make great holly berries, sequins and glitter add sparkle, and large buttons make nice “ornaments.” 4. Add a rib-bon for hanging, and the wreath is ready to be displayed or gifted! Source: www.happinessishomemade.net/kids-christmas-craft-tis-sue-paper-wreath/

CHRISTMAS LIGHT RECYCLINGIt’s that time of year when your bins and boxes full of Christmas or-naments and lights are pulled out of the attic or garage, and you go through the task of testing the light strings before putting them on the tree. When they don’t work, you try jiggling the bulbs to see if you can get them to light up. What to do with those that are no lon-ger working? Instead of throwing them into the trash, bring them to the Island County Annex on Camano for recycling! A recycle bin for strings of lights, as well as computer cords you no longer need and electrical extension cords, will be in the lobby of the Island Coun-ty Annex from November 20th through January 19th. WSU Waste Wise volunteers will make sure they are taken to a responsible local recycler, saving them from ending up in the landfill. The Annex is located at 121 N. East Camano Drive, across the street from Camano Storage, and is open from 8 am – noon, and 1 – 3 pm. Questions? Call Waste Wise at (360) 678-7974.

WINTER NIGHTScan be a challenge for Northwest astronomers, but on those eve-nings where the weather cooperates, the vista skyward is full of re-warding sights. One of the best, and most famous, is the Orion Neb-ula. The Orion Nebula is fairly easy to find because it is located in therecognizable and large constellation of Orion the hunter- Look for the bright trio of stars in Orion’s belt toward the south after dark in December and January skies. The entire region is filled with inter-stellar clouds, but most of these can’t be easily seen, even with a telescope. The Orion Nebula is the exception, visible to the naked eye as an undefined glow in the bottom third of the constellation. With binoculars or small telescope, that glow will stand out, espe-cially in dark skies. Our eyes are not sensitive enough to detect the color you see in photographs , but you will see a greenish glow with several stars in the middle (the green is double ionized oxygen, a low probability electron transition found only in the high vacuum of deep space). What are you looking at? The Orion Nebula is the stellar nursery closest to us where collapsing hydrogen clouds ignite into new suns. Telescopes peering into the infra-red have detected proto stars, stars on the edge of ignition, buried deep within the cocoon of the cloud. In addition, the Hubble telescope has detected proto planetary discs planets still in the earliest stages of formation. We are literally witnessing the birth of new solar systems like our own. On the next clear and dark night, take a peak toward Orion and wel-come the newest members of our nighttime sky.

THEY DIDN’T COME ANY BETTER By Richard Hanks

Justin Hebert had ambitions of seeing the world. The bonus mon-ey he got for joining the army was to go toward college. His sister Jessica told the Arlington Times that they both wanted a way out of the country town where they grew up, although it was who they were—the products of that little town of Silvana. For Justin the way out was the army, leaving Arlington High School in June 2001 and only after convincing his parents to sign for the 17-year-old. After basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, he was assigned to Delta Battery, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regt. of the 173rd Airborne Brigade; the “Sky Soldiers” had been reactivated in 2000.

Justin William Michael Hebert was born in Everett on July 28, 1983 but knew the little farming community of Silvana as home. He was enthusiastic about sports, especially soccer and baseball and en-joyed talking snowboarding. Chad Winterhalter, who grew up with Justin, remembered that he “had a knack for making people laugh.” That humor was evident in a letter home to Jim Payne of Willow and Jim’s Cafe, where Justin sarcastically warned that, “Iraq is probably the worst place in the world to vacation. I wouldn’t recommend it.” Justin completed his training just a week before planes brought down the New York City towers. Initially posted to Vicenza, Italy, he and the 173rd became part of operation Iraqi Freedom in late March 2003 with a parachute drop into northern Iraq, seizing Bashur Air-field and securing Kirkuk 15 days later. Ironically, and perhaps tell-ing, this war-ravaged area 150 miles north of Baghdad near the Ti-gris River is considered the “cradle of civilization.”

Justin, as a fire-support specialist, operated in forward areas train-ing lasers on targeted enemy sites for Allied aircraft and artillery. Iraqi Freedom was declared a victory on May 1, 2003 but Hebert’s unit continued to work enforcing night curfews. Justin was driving the Humvee the evening of August 1st, singing slightly off-key one of his favorite songs, as was his habit. As they descended toward the bridge over the Little Zab River, his unarmored vehicle was peppered with automatic gunfire. Justin punched the accelerator to escape the ambush and save his comrades as a rocket-propelled grenade ripped into the driver’s side window. Others in the Hum-vee were wounded but Justin was killed; the first from Snohomish County to die in Iraq.

Once when Justin and Chad visited the Little White Church on the Hill outside Silvana, Justin picked out a quiet spot and told his friend that was where he wanted to be buried. On August 16, 2003 an estimated 400 residents gathered to say goodbye as Justin was laid to rest in that spot next to the little church.

In October 2003 Sergeant Jason Haynes was interviewed as he sat at a patrol site in Iraq near the site where Justin died. He told Stars and Stripes that he struggled with the death of Justin Hebert, questioning the war’s purpose. Justin, said Haynes, was “the type of guy that always had a smile on his face. And he was a good soldier. They don’t come any better.”

HANG OUT FOR THE HOLIDAYS ON CAMANO “Well, the Christmas season is once more upon us. The hills have a dusting of snow and a nip is in the air. The early mornng mem-bers of Camano Island Coffee at the Camano Plaza have much to be thankful for. So it’s fitting that we stop for a moment and look back on the things and the people who have impacted our lives. Just a few years ago we lost two of our compatriots: Mr. Bill burns and our dear friend Mr. Clyde Taylor (otherwise known as “Slidin’ Clyde” because of how he danced on the island over 40 years ago). These men grew up here on the island and they brought local his-tory into our morning coffee sessions. They filled the room with laughter as they told stories of their travels and experiences, stories that added depth and color to the tapestry of our little island. This is the season when friends and family gather around the ta-ble and share the stories of their lives. These stories are the strands that create the fabric of our lives and the lives of our families and communities. As we approach the Christmas season, many of us think of the gifts we plan to give to someone special. we need to remember that a special gift was given 2,000 years ago in a little manger on a freezing night when God sent His son into the world to bring us light. most of our members are getting up in years, and as a result, our gift list looks like something from a Medicare catalog. I could use this, Brad could use that, and Mike could use a whole shopping list of things. However, I think the most important request would be for John Kirkpatrick, our “leader”, who needs a new kidney, as getting dialysis three times a week is getting old. So pray for John and his wife Gay and if you have an extra kidney, give John a call at Camano Island Coffee. Well, I guess it’s time to go. Christmas is fast approaching, cards are being sent, and gifts are being wrapped. I would invite every-one to come and visit one of our morning get-togethers here at the IGA Plaza at 6am. It’s an eclectic group, ranging from doctors and dentists to physicists and roofers. Stop by and become a part of the tapestry of Camano Island.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone ‘round about them, and they were sore afraid. and an angel said unto them, ‘Fear not for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.’ Luke 2:8-10.” – Story written by “Doc”.

THE MYTH OF THE RELIABLE CONTRACTOR Ever notice how most contractors are a little flaky? Doesn’t matter whether it’s the guy installing a new furnace or the dude replacing re-pairing your washing machine. They all seem to have the same concept of customer relations: they’re slackers. They fail to call you back, they arrive two hours late – if they keep the appointment at all –and then they leave after just 30 minutes on the job because the one critical tool is back at the shop. Why are most contractors so unreliable? I did some research on the dark web and stumbled across a deep dark secret. There is a course all contractors are required to take – and are sworn never to reveal to their clients, the homeowners. It is an intensive four-week seminar on how to deal with difficult customers – by which they mean, well, anyone who hires them and expects the job to be done on time on price. Of course, getting the job done RIGHT will cost you extra. I went undercover to expose this scam and obtained an exclusive copy of the course syllabus from a disgruntled former HVAC guy. Program Overview: Don’t take crap from just anyone. Take it from us! In Customer Relations with Annoying People – or CRAP, for short, you’ll learn everything you need to deal with pushy homeowners. You know the type: the ones who expect you to do the job WHEN and AS promised. Follow the key principles in this program and before long, you won’t be taking CRAP from any customer [Disclaimer: Because you may no longer have any]. Week One: The Initial Visit: Setting the Trap. Arriving on time at the initial appointment is critical to landing the gig. But don’t worry – that’s the last time you need to show up on time. You will role-play a scene from our patented “First Impressions” in which you inspire unwarrant-ed confidence in your workmanship with vague references to previous quasi-relevant experience to create the false impression you’ve actually done this kind of work before. Week Two: The Estimate: Tightening the Screws. This module teach-es you to turn a 15-minute job tightening a screw with a Phillips into a major demolition project requiring an excavator and a cement mixer. Experience the thrill of duping customers into believing that a minor leak (which you will secretly make worse) requires taking the main level down to the studs for fear their house will collapse into a giant sinkhole. A panel of experts discusses how to use obscure terminology to make any everyday project sound far costlier than it should be, with phras-es like, “Hmmm, I see that your Angular Discharge Tube is not feeding properly into your Compression Valve. That’s a serious a problem…” Week Three: Over-Promise and Under-Deliver. Master the technique of promising to complete the job in three weeks under budget, then actually delivering it in three months at double the original estimate. This session explains how to set up customer expectations, then slowly chip away at their false hope by routinely arriving late, leaving early and complaining about vital parts being on back order. Participants break into “Plausibility Groups” to compile a list of credible-sounding excuses. Want to spend the day drinking? Learn to say, “My truck wouldn’t start” with a straight face. Masters candidates learn how to get the client to pay for a new engine for your truck. Week Four: Over-Billing. This session equips you with a glossary of indecipherable construction-sounding terms to assist in padding your final bill. Easily transform a $50 service charge for shutting a valve into a $795 invoice for Pressure-Balancing the Discharge Flow to repair the Hy-dronic Shutoff Receptor. For an additional $49.95, you’ll go home with a three-ring binder filled with dozens of highly technical flow charts and electrical grid diagrams which have nothing to do with your actual proj-ect, easily attachable to your invoice to confuse your customer.

BUTTERED POPCORN

MOVIEREVIEWS

Reviews of movies currently playing

BUTTERED POPCORN MOVIE REVIEWSWith Scott Slater

Back from a short Thanksgiving break.

JUSTIC LEAGUE.I don’t know why I watched this movie. I suppose I thought it would be like Wonder Woman with Israeli actress Gal Gadot. I kind of en-joyed that film. Justice League on the other hand was slow and bor-ing for an adult and had bad CG (computer graphics) but it’s a good kid movie. In my case the best thing about the movie was the end. That couldn’t come fast enough because I downed a large orange soda and refused to leave until the film was over. That was the lon-gest 30 minutes of my life.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESSI expected this to be as good as the original and because it had a few A-rated actors. Johnny Depp makes a brief appearance as a live guy then as a dead guy. Johnny’s finances are a wreck so it’s understandable why he took this short role. This poor film was so slow I ate my popcorn in slow-motion. No matter how bad a movie is I stay to get my money’s worth. At the 30 minute mark I wished I had been the murder victim. Again I downed a large orange soda. Apparently my memory is short. Even though I didn’t care for the film you might. It does have some pretty good visuals. If you need to take a 45 minute break you won’t miss anything.

WONDERI sort of knew what to expect but I like Julia Roberts and Owen Wil-son and thought the film would be fun. The film follows the theme you’d expect: kid gets bullied then makes a friend then is voted best kid in school. It’s a great movie for kids’ eight to eleven. Plus they can down five large sodas and not feel threatened. Take the chil-dren to see the film if it still plays.

Remember: Star Wars the Last Jedi has an early premiere December 14th at 7:10pm. Get there early.

WINTER FACT:

In the win-ter-based movie

Frozen (2013), there is a scene

where two townsmen debate whether to stack

firewood bark up or bark down. This refers to an actual debate in Finland that was sparked in 2013 after a 12-hour TV program on firewood aired.

The Stanwood Area Histor-ical Society

asks, “Did You Know?”

Excerpts taken from the

“Stanwood Story”, written

for theStanwood News

by Alice Essex.

With the 1906 push to progress along the stilly, came organiza-tions of the Stanwood Branch of the Snohomish Horticulture So-ciety, which held its first big meeting in the Peoples’ Union Hall near the depot. President W. H. Paulhamus of the Puyallup Valley Grower’s Association and the State Horticulture Association was the principal speaker and forecast a new epoch ahead for farmers. Local growers demonstrated their know-how that fall, with dis-plays of turnips that weighed 20 pounds and reached 34 inches in diameter, potatoes that weighed 2 pounds each and a cabbage head that tipped the scales to 14 pounds. There was also a bumper harvest of pears, pumpkins, berries, oats, and even grapes. Good roads were another major concern and meetings of the Northwest Good Roads Club were greeted with enthusiasm, except by the chronic grumblers, who didn’t want better roads because they would bring more automobiles, said the Tidings. Conrad Lien was president of the Stanwood club; other clubs were organized in Florence and Norman. The organized effort apparently paid off in the district, where 65 miles of roads were built, stumped, graded, graveled and/or, repaired in two years, including 1906. July 1906 also marked the beginning of construction of the Thom-le Bridge near Florence. TheContract was awarded to the Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging Com-pany of Seattle on a bid of$14,980. Specifications called for a 220-foot span with a center tu-bular cement pier to support the draw, which was designed for an 84-foot clearing when opened. The bridge was to replace the lower ferry across the Stillagua-mish, which was operating at a point near the planned location of new street areas. During the two years previous to this time, ferry traffic had been clocked and showed an average of 100 teams per day, 3,000 teams per month or 36,000 per year besides pedestrians, bikes and automobiles. When the Evangelical Lutheran Church on Camano Island was dedicated on July 13, 1906, as many as 56 teams were clocked on the lower ferry, headed for the special event. Some 600 persons were said to have attended, including practically all Islanders. Rev. L. C. Foss, president of the Pacific District of the Pacific Synod, was assisted in the ceremonies by the local pastor, Rev. H. M. Tjernagel, and six visiting pastors. July 1906 was also a memorable date for the Stanwood Post Of-fice. It was enlarged and became an international money order of-fice. The salary of Postmaster D. Carl Pearson was upped to $1,100 yearly and he was given an assistant. Proceeds for the fiscal year, which had ended the previous April, exceeded $2,100. Rumors of a big steel plant, to be established three miles from town at Port Susan, caused the gig business excitement of the year. The plant to be built by James H. Moore and Associates, would em-ploy 4,000 men and would be located between Lake Martha and Lake Cushman, just west of Lake Goodwin. According to a Seattle newspaper story of September 1906, the proposed plant was practically a certainty for Port Susan. Herb Conners, owner of 7,000acres, had already donated 1,000 acres for the site. The Port Susan Logging Company, presently operating on the land, would be through within three years when construction was scheduled to begin. What happened remains a mystery, as did the steel plan, which never became a reality in this area.
