SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 4, 2019
* = Those who are able, please stand.
Congregation responds in bold.
CENTERING THOUGHT
Beannacht – A New Year Blessing
~ John O’Donohue ~
On the day when
The weight deadens
On your shoulders
And you stumble,
May the clay dance
To balance you.
1660 Kessler Boulevard, East Drive
Indianapolis, IN 46220

And when your eyes
Freeze behind
The grey window
And the ghost of loss
Gets into you,
May a flock of colours,
Indigo, red, green
And azure blue,
Come to awaken in you
A meadow of delight.
When the canvas frays
In the currach of thought
And a stain of ocean
Blackens beneath you,
May there come across the waters
A path of yellow moonlight
To bring you safely home.
May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
May the clarity of light be yours,
May the fluency of the ocean be yours,
May the protection of the ancestors be yours.
And so may a slow
Wind work these words
Of love around you,
An invisible cloak
To mind your life.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul,
the commandment of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes,
the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever;
the teachings of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
The law of the Lord is more precious than fine gold;
the goodness of God is sweeter than honey.

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of our restoration, whenever we come home to you,
we realize how far we have strayed
and how much we have forgotten of your law and your love.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Forgive us and heal us.
Restore us to our relationship with you;
through Jesus Christ, in whom we trust.

* DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,

THANKSGIVING AFTER COMMUNION
Gracious Lord, this table is filled with all good things.
Having been to this table, we, too, are filled with all good
things –
love broken open and grace poured out,
hope for us and for the world.
We give you thanks for these gifts, O God,
and for those with whom we have shared them.
We are reminded this meal is not just for now, it is forever.
And you are with us not just now, but until the end of the age.
These are your promises, and in them we find peace. Amen.
*SHARING THE PEACE
The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.
(Worshippers may greet one another with words of Christ’s peace.)

MUSIC IN WORSHIP
This morning’s final hymn, No. 744 “Arise, Your Light Hs
Come,” focuses on light and the release from captivity that the
Spirit brings. It was written in 1973 by Ruth Duck when she was
trying to discern how to revise William Merrill’s “Rise Up, O Men
of God” so it would not seem exclusively male. In the 1970s,
generic uses of male terms to denote both men and women were
beginning to be reviewed and found objectionable. Rev. Duck was
among those struggling to come up with language that seemed just.
Ruth Duck (born 1947) received a doctorate degree in theology and
liturgy from Boston University School of Theology in 1989.
Author of many hymns, 16 of which are in Glory to God, she taught
for 27 years at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in
Evanston, Illinois.
Choirs resume rehearsals Wednesday, August 21st
Do you like to sing? Maybe you’ve sung in a choir before and are
looking to dust off those vocal cords? Or maybe being part of a
choir is a new idea. Choir is a great place for spiritual formation and
artistic expression, and fall is a great time to start! Northminster has
options for all ages. Children and youth rehearse weekly and sing in
worship once a month. Chancel Choir rehearses weekly and sings
each Sunday in worship. There is no registration process – simply
show up to the first rehearsal.
