september is almost a memory so i have put away my whites…white shoes, white handbag and white duck pants. With all the troubles in the world that i can’t do anything about…syria, Kenya, Turkey…and on the home front the debt ceiling and obamacare…i for one am distracting myself by changing my closet from summer to fall and making the really big decision of what to wear to the ArtsWestchester gala in November.

There is good news in the fashion world (if not in the real world). velvet is back. This may not rock your boat, but for years it rocked mine. Yes, i was the daughter of a velvet salesman. i knew as a child that if top designers were using fine French velvet (the stuff of royalty) in their fall collections, and hundreds of yards of it were tumbling off the warehouse shelves, my father could afford to take our family on vacation, and perhaps bring home a new dress or two for me. Back then, the uncertainty about the velvet season was a stressful family concern.

This week, i was happy to find a fashionista soul mate in Anna Marie Magagna (rhymes with lasangna) whose father’s two silk mills in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and her mother’s satin backed velvet dresses inspired her fashion sense. Magagna’s brilliant career as a fashion illustrator is on view at the Madelyn Jordan gallery in scarsdale through November 2. The gallery showcases the work of 20th century contemporary art in all media. during the 70s, Magagna was the artistic darling of geraldine stutz, President of henri Bendel, penning their edgy advertisements for the New York Times with freedom and flair. she describes her work as fine art in fashion in which she draws directly from model to pen capturing what she calls the insouci-ant woman. her sophisticated, yet fluid, original line drawings interpret the designs of major fashion icons like stephen Burrows, sonia Rykiel Jean Muir and Zandra Rhodes.

so as the leaves fall and the weather chills, i am focusing on things i can do something about. i am dieting to fit into my “other size” wardrobe, gathering stuff for the december coat drives and measuring what’s in fashion against what is in my closet. hopefully, by the time i lose five pounds, the debt limit issue will be resolved and syria will destroy its chemical weap-ons arsenal. one can only hope.

news in briefSchoolhouse Theater Presents U.S. Premier of Swedish Play

The schoolhouse Theater opens its 2013-14 season on october 10 with the u.s. premiere of And Give Us The Shadows, written by acclaimed swedish contemporary playwright, Lars Norén. The play takes place on Eugene o’Neill’s 60th birthday in 1948 as he and his third wife await the arrival of o’Neill’s sons from previous marriages. Entirely ficti-tious, the play presents a dramatic account of what might have hap-pened on that day. Music Conservatory Holds Tribute Concert for Carol Shiffman

The Music Conservatory of Westchester (MCW) recently held a tribute concert for Carol shiffman, MCW’s Executive director who passed away last october after a long battle with breast cancer.

Friends of Music Concerts Celebrates 60th Season

since its first performance in 1954, the Friends of Music Concerts, inc. has been bringing chamber music to Westchester County audiences. The group will celebrate the start of its 60th season on october 5, with a performance by pianist Jeremy denk. on october 19, the internationally-renowned Emerson string quartet will present a con-cert of Mendelssohn, shostakovich, and Beethoven. The Friends’ 60th season continues into next year with the Chamber Music society of Lincoln Center; 22-year-old violin-ist Paul huang; a Franz schubert celebration; and Canada’s renowned st. Lawrence string quartet. All concerts take place in the Kusel Auditorium at sleepy hollow high

In Memoriam: Matthew Lifflander

Matthew Lifflander, hudson River Museum chairman for seven years, passed away on August 18 at age 80. Lifflander, who lived in hastings-on-hudson, was practicing law as the founding partner of New York City-based litigation boutique Lifflander & Reich up until his last days. Born in 1932, he grew up in Jackson heights, queens, attended NYu as an undergraduate, and received his law degree from Cornell university. Lifflander is survived by his sons Clay and Justin and their families – including four grandchil-dren and two great grandchildren – and his fiancée sandra isaacs. A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth shalom in hastings-on-hudson on october 10 at 4pm.

YoFi Fest Brings the Art of Cinema to Yonkers

The first annual Yonkers Film Festival (YoFi Fest) will make its debut on october 11, 12 and 13 in the screen-ing room of the Yonkers Riverfront

Library, with additional activities throughout the property hosted by Yonkers-based restaurants. Feature and short films, documentaries, ani-mation, music videos and student work from emerging artists will be featured, in addition to lectures, panel discussions, receptions and opportunities for attendees to inter-act with film industry professionals.

Curated by award-winning film and television professionals, attend-ees will enjoy 52 chosen films, ten of which were either produced or directed by Westchester residents. ArtsWestchester is pleased to announce a $25,000 grant from The Aetna Foundation, a nation-al foundation based in hartford, Connecticut that supports proj-ects to promote wellness, health and access to high quality health care for everyone. The grant supports mural-making artist residencies designed to help elementary school students understand the importance of good nutrition next year.

New Rochelle is the latest municipality to benefit from ArtsWestchester’s public art initia-tive. on october 18, the façade of the New Rochelle Public Library will be transformed when a trip-tych mural by artist dale Zheutlin is unveiled. The artist explains that the murals, which call to mind abstract stained glass windows, were created to represent the ele-ments that exist in the Cosmos: sky, earth and fire.

Tom geoffino, New Rochelle Public Library director says, “We are delighted that this outdoor instal-lation expands our commitment to making great art accessible to the entire community, and to fostering a stronger sense of place.”

This public art installation was made possible with the support of the New York state Legislature, and additional funds from Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the New Rochelle Public Library Foundation. Councilman ivar hyden was an advisor on the project.

Zheutlin, who also created comple-mentary banners for the interior of the library’s atrium, hopes that the vibrant images will enrich the cre-ative journey of students seeking knowledge when visiting the library.

starting this fall, ArtsWestchester is offering semester-long intern-ship programs in areas such as Arts in Education, Communications, development/special Events, Exhibitions and Photography. interns will gain job readiness skills, including project manage-ment, public relations, professional writing, team collaboration, lead-ership, content management and graphic design.

Workshops on resume building, interviewing and writing will be offered, in addition to complimen-tary admission to arts/cultural events throughout Westchester, where interns can assist in building support for the arts. internships are unpaid, and it is the responsibility of the intern to arrange transporta-tion and parking. some full aca-demic year positions are available, based on an intern’s performance.

This year’s deadline for grants in the Arts Alive category is october 18. Funding is available for community-based arts projects, as well as for art-ists to create new work. Project grants range from $1,000 to $5,000, with prior-ity given to emerging cultural organiza-tions, activities that bring the arts to underserved communities, and projects that engage a broad and diverse audi-ence. ArtsWestchester will award a $2,500 artist grant to each of two artists, supporting their efforts to create works that in some way relate to Westchester. Joseph P. oates, a senior vice President at Con Edison and has been an ArtsWestchester board member since 2003. serving first as treasurer and then as president of the Board of Trustees, Joe is an extraordinary leader with clear vision, and is a strong supporter of the arts along with his wife, Ellen. New Exhibition Challenges the Functionality of Drawingdrawing is often considered to be an artist’s immediate impression, a practice of study, or simply a prelim-inary step in the process of creating a more polished work of art. Pushing the Line, an exhibition set to open on october 25 in ArtsWestchester’s Peckham and shenkman galleries, challenges these traditional notions, expanding the definition of drawing as an art form in and of itself.

in addition to graphite and ink on paper, the 12 artists will also present work in pastel, ink and non-tradition-al materials such as tape to explore the use of drawing in contemporary art practices. in addition to work by gabe Brown, Larry Brown, Kellyann

Burns, Roz Chast, Christine hiebert, Kathleen Kucka, Peter sis, Cynthia Lin, Creighton Michael and Kathy Ruttenberg, artist Judy glantzman has been invited to create a site-specific drawing inside the Arts Exchange’s bank vault.

An opening reception for Pushing the Line, curated by Neil Watson, Executive director of Long island Musuem, will take place on Thursday, october 24, from 6-8:30pm. The exhibition will be on view through November 30.

Groundbreaking ArtsWestchester Exhibition Goes National

After ten years of mounting extraordinary exhibitions in its historic building, the Arts Exchange, ArtsWestchester is being recognized by Exhibits usA as it tours an edited version of Confrontational Ceramics. The 2008 show, orginally named Confrontational Ceramics, was curated by Judith s. schwartz, Phd, an internation-ally recognized specialist in contemporary ceramics, as part of ArtsWestchester's county-wide All Fired Up extravaganza.

Traditionally, the focus of ceramics has been to serve functional and decorative purposes, but there isn’t anything traditional about Inciteful Clay, an innovative and sometimes shocking exhibition scheduled to tour the country for three years starting this January.

More than charming knick-knacks or practical tableware, the collection features the work of contemporary artists who push boundaries, offering thought-provoking commentary on war and politics, the social and human condition, gender issues, environ-

mental concerns, and popular and material culture. The work is aggressive, disturbing, irreverent and sometimes violent, though threads of humor balance out the collection. Inciteful Clay explores socially relevant issues and the role of tradition in life and art.

The exhibition is slated to begin in such art centers as the Foosaner Art Museum at Florida institute of Technology, The Arkansas Art Center and the Culture Lab at Mid-America Arts Alliance. overall, visitors may be surprised by the ability of clay to convey significant content in this radical departure from an otherwise conven-tional art form. With the sweetest but spookiest holiday loom-ing over october, there are plenty of ways in Westchester to satisfy your taste for tricks and treats this halloween.

Nowhere in the county screams “halloween” more than sleepy hollow, the site of Washington irving’s famed, fearsome legend. storyteller Jonathan Kruk comes to the old dutch Church to provide dramatic performances of irving’s classic tale, flavored with live spooky organ music and presented by historic hudson valley (hhv).

Also in sleepy hollow, the art of makeup effects and costume design are on frightening display at horseman’s hollow at Philipsburg Manor, hhv’s haunted walk-through inspired by irving’s tale. over in Croton-on-hudson, hhv displays its great Jack o’ Lantern Blaze at van Cortlandt Manor. An elaborate walk-through experience for all ages, the Blaze features 5,000+ hand-carved illuminated jack o’ lanterns. A towering pumpkin bonfire, pumpkin dinosaurs and much more await you in this innova-tive october spectacle. Making its debut at this

year’s Blaze is the Museum of Pumpkin Art, devoted to sculptural works inspired by (but not made from) pumpkins.

For a little haunted history, a daytime visit to sunnyside, Washington irving’s original home in Tarrytown, is a perfect prelude to hhv’s other events. view artifacts related to irving’s story, enjoy shadow puppet performances of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and experience one of irving’s eerie tales on a walk through the woods.

Also in Tarrytown, dare to enter the darkest shad-ows of Lyndhurst at night, when the gothic mansion transforms into Jay ghoul’s house of Curiosities. This halloween-themed tour introduces a cast of creepy characters within the mansion as visitors are guided through eerily-lit corridors. The mansion’s beautiful dining room will even be set for halloween dinner, but watch out – those might actually be fingers in the finger bowls!

This year, Chappaqua Library will feature Stein's Circle, a series of programs revolving around gertrude stein and her circle of friends in Paris, on view from october 6 through November 1. The library’s programs will con-sist of lectures and activities that reflect on era-specific work by such creative figures as Matisse, Picasso, hemingway and Fitzgerald. highlights will include an outdoor, antique automobile show; a lecture on jazz, bebop and speakeasies; and a French-influenced cooking class followed by dinner at Crabtree’s Kittle house. The library invites visitors to explore a time period that was rich in literature, art, and music. in a decade when the world was crawling out from under the oppres-sion of World War i, stein and her circle focused on the joy of life and all that the world had to offer.

From october 27 – February 16, 2014, the Katonah Museum of Art will present Eye to I…3,000 Years of Portraits. The Katonah Museum selected sixty portraits and asked people from all walks of life to give their comments, interpretations or critique on the artwork. The portraiture exhibition represents a range of time periods and cultures that includes Picasso’s 1964 Cubist crayon drawing, Tete d’homme barbu à la cigarette, an Egyptian bust of Amenhotep iii from 1,300 BC and a 16th century oil painting of a german aristocrat posing as Mary Magdalen. Through interactive video touch screens, visitors can contrib-ute their own critiques to contrast and compare interpretations.

hoff-Barthelson Music school offers quality instruction in both jazz and classical music, as well as high caliber recitals and concerts, usually featuring faculty members. This fall, the school will feature faculty clarinetist daniel spitzer in recital on Thursday, october 3, at 8pm at the greenville Community Church in scarsdale. Mr. spitzer has performed with the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet, and in the Broadway pit of shows such as Wicked, The Producers and Mary Poppins. he will be joined by the solace Ensemble, composed of fellow faculty performers, to play Quatuor pour la fin du temps (quartet for the End of Time), by olivier Messiaen.

Neuberger Museum of ArtA teaching museum of modern, contemporary and African art, the Neuberger is an integral part of Purchase College that presents a variety of changing exhibitions in addition to its permanent collection. Now through december 1, the museum will present The Compromised Land: Recent Photography and Video from Israel. The exhibition revolves around the land, figuratively and literally, through the intellectual and emotional interpretations of some of its artists. The work expresses a sense of unsettlement and threat, through the experience of internal and external discord, as the artists explore israel, its politics and culture, and a complicated love for the land.

A professional orchestra of over 60 musicians, the symphony of Westchester is known for quality performances, world-class solo-ists and its award-winning Jazz institute for homeless Children. This fall the orchestra, for-merly known as the Westchester Chamber symphony, will kick off its 17th season with an all-Beethoven program featuring pianist Alon goldstein. The remainder of the year will include full symphonic concerts, showcasing music from Mozart to gershwin, with talented soloists and an annual Composers of the Future program.

The Tarrytown Music hall presents live performances and films as part of its programming, serving over 80,000 patrons a year. Listed on the National Register for Historic Places, it is Westchester’s oldest theater. its fall lineup includes performances by well known artists such as sinead o’Connor, Merle haggard, david Cassidy and more, with music of all kinds – from cultural to rock, country to soul. highlights of the season also include comedies such as The Hungry Hungry Games – A Parody, and children’s productions ranging from Pinkalicious the Musical, to Dinosaur Train Live! – Buddy’s Big Adventure. The 2013-2014 season marks the the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Purchase College's 36th year of bringing world-class entertainment to the county. With an impres-sive lineup for the fall, highlights include performances by the Martha graham dance Company, violin-ist Joshua Bell, and Yamato - The drummers of Japan . The area's premier of STePz, savion glover’s latest tap-dancing production, will also contribute to a season full of exceptional performances. The Taconic opera presents high-quality, professional opera events that are accessible and affordable to the general public. Productions include a full orchestra and expe-rienced vocalists, many of whom have performed at the Metropolitan and New York City opera compa-nies, as well as international ven-ues. This october, opera lovers will be treated to three performances in two locations of Norma, Bellini’s beloved masterpiece. soprano Francesca Mondanaro, who will perform the starring role as the druid princess, has been compared to Maria Callas, as she possesses a voluminous, lush voice and an impressive range, both technically and artistically. Performances will be held at the Yorktown stage in Yorktown and Archbishop stepinac high school in White Plains.

The Westchester Philharmonic has worked with acclaimed artists such as Midori, Joshua Bell and the late isaac stern. This fall, the lineup will include music from Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart and haydn in three concerts, featuring such acclaimed musicians as violinist Ryu goto and pianist Jeremy denk, in addition to renowned conduc-tor Jorge Mester. New this year, the organization will offer Inside the Music, a casual evening that includes dinner at Tarrytown’s new Cooper’s Mill restaurant, followed by a listeners’ guide to precede the following day’s concert, provided by Maestro Mester.

The WPPAC presents a full-spec-trum of performing arts events for the City of White Plains and sur-rounding communities. Typical line-ups include comedic, theater and musical performances, and this fall is no exception. its theater season begins with The 39 Steps, a funny, fast-paced whodunit with 150 char-acters played by just 4 actors. The lineup continues with a Resident Theater Training Program produc-tion of Avenue Q (school Edition), a musical comedy that tells the story of a recent college graduate’s everyday struggles while trying to find work, love and a purpose.
