friday 4/24 #AOCFEST ARTISTS
If there’s anyone who pretty much defines the vibraphone in jazz, that cool sound like lemonade on a hot, summer day, it’s the legendary Roy Ayers. He’s reminded us that everybody does indeed love the sunshine, he’s a storyteller to human and butterflies up in the sky alike, and he’s the second definition any dictionary would give you for “Ubiquity”. Look it up. The man is a legend. -Anthony Dean-Harris
ROY AYERS 7:15pm DURHAM ARMORY
Robert Glasper is a titan of our modern era. He can play in any musical direction he so chooses and can turn on a dime; his work producing albums cements his footprint in the jazz canon, however people like to define it nowadays; his joviality and musicality that is his general state of being as a man on his earth is so in tuned with how he expresses it through the keys, piano, keyboard or otherwise has rightfully earned the praise the world over that he has been working so hard to achieve. -Anthony Dean-Harris
ROBERT GLASPER TRIO 12:00am DURHAM ARMORY
Kenny Garrett is one of the giants of our time. A multi-Grammy award winning, DownBeat poll topping, saxophone and flute playing legend who’s played with Pharoah Sanders, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, and Miles Davis in his electric period but Garrett’s solo work ain’t anything to sneeze at, either. his latest albums on the Mack Avenue label, like last year’s Pushing the World Away, has been been award-worthy work. -Anthony Dean-Harris
KEnnY GARRETT QUInTET 10:45pm MOTORCO MUSIC HALL
As a leader Eve has recorded and co-produced three albums entitled, “Faces of Eve”, “I Feel Like Some Jazz Today” and “Live @ Smoke”…these varying projects embodying Jazz , Funk, Soul, Blues, R&B, Vocalese and Composition…display an openness to versatility and creativity. She has performed live with numerous musicians [Chucho Valdez, Mary Lou Williams, Roy Hargrove] and was also featured on albums with Ramsey Lewis, Norman Connors, Javon Jackson, Teo Macero… to name a few.
EvE CORnELIOUS 9:00pm pSI THeATeR @ D.A.C.
The major parallel between the poetry of yesteryear’s Romantic era and the music being pumped out by today’s soul extraordinaire, and figurehead of the The Romantic Movement soul collective, Jesse Boykins III, is the idea that emotion should be pushed to the forefront. In Boykins’ case, this raw emotion has almost everything to do with love and romance, instead of some sort of abstract ideal of enlightenment. -Eric Tullis
JESSE BOYKInS III 10:45pm DURHAM ARMORY

The New York based octet, Mad Satta, blew it’s biggest gust of fresh, jazz-scented air into soul music’s atmosphere with the release of it’s debut album. Mad Satta’s Comfort LP, was built on an intentional, instrumental offensive, with lead singer, Joanna Teters, at the helm. With a voice possessed by a velvety richness that’s perfectly suited to take on a cover like Curtis Mayfield’s The Makings of You,” Teters’ capabilities lend themselves to original cool as well.-Cameron Jernigan presented by Revive Music
MAD SATTA 8:00pm MOTORCO MUSIC HALL
With only a couple of albums under their belt–2012’s Be Free and 2014’s Please Rewind–horn/reed players, Andris Mattson, Max Bryk, Amber Navran, of the jazz and soul trio, Moonchild, have built a considerable following among both the neo-soul-hungover crowd and traditional jazz lovers who don’t mind the genre’s evolution. For much of this, we have lead singer Amber Navran to thank, whose voice whistles and whooshes in out of the band’s soul claps, horn melodies, and synth shades.-Eric Tullis
MOOnCHILD 10:20pm pInHOOk
Kris Bowers is on fire. The 2011 Thelonious Monk piano competition winner has been a downright astonishment backing José James, switching off with Robert Glasper, shining alongside Lauren Desberg, or being just plain amazing on his own, particularly on his debut album, Heroes and Misfits. This young (and tall, very tall) talent knows his way around a keyboard and will be one of those artists who you’ll still be hearing blowing minds forty years from now. -Anthony Dean-Harris
KRIS BOwERS 9:30pm MOTORCO MUSIC HALL
Music superstar Prince knows what audiences around the world also know. When Mike Phillips puts his saxophone to his lips, magic is about to happen.Experts know greatness. That’s why Phillips is the only musician in the world to have recorded and toured with the legendary “Big Three” of American soul music: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince. But you don’t have to be a music deity to appreciate Phillips gifts.
MIKE PHILLIPS 10:15pm pSI THeATeR @ D.A.C.
friday 4/24 #AOCFEST ARTISTSThere are likely fewer more appropriate names for a band than for the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Their ability to leap throughout genre, back any artist who’s got a soul, and gather up a crowds affection fits squarely in their job description. The Chicago-based octet made up of the of a whole heap of the Brothers Hubert and Graves has been turning heads for the last fifteen years now, performing with the likes of Prince, Femi Kuti, Erykah Badu, the Wu Tang Clan, Maxwell, and many others. -Anthony Dean-Harris

Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is one of the finest artists in jazz today. Over the years, the Blue Note recording artists has matured his compositional and improvisational tone to one less concerned with being flashy and more concerned about reaching the soul, and he has flourished all the more for taking this approach. He’s definitely one to look forward to when backing José James or playing with Kris Bowers. -Anthony Dean-Harris
TAKUYA KURODA 11:35pm pInHOOk
“I am merely a middle man trying to bring you and true love together. LOVElife is my melodic contribution…,” wrote Oakland-bred soul sage, Chris Turner, about his late 2012, mixtape master suite, LOVElife Is A Challenge. As a frequent, featured vocalist of the genre-twisting jazz band ERIMAJ and one of the core members of the experimental-soul music collective, the Romantic Movement, Turner has helped usher in a fresh take on passion-laced R&B music. -Eric Tullis
CHRIS TURnER 8:40pm pInHOOk
Al Strong is a Washington, D.C. native trumpeter, arranger, and composer. Since he first emerged on the scene in 1998 as a Jazz Studies major at North Carolina Central University, Strong has been an emerging artist in jazz. He has been described as being “among those leading Durham jazz into a resurgence.” (The Independent – Sylvia Pfeiffenberger). Strong is also a founder of the non-profit jazz advocacy organization, The Art of Cool Project.

Over the past several years, Carlitta Durand has been a constant name in the underground hip-hop, r&b, and soul scene. Most often associated with her contributions on Little Brother albums and for providing stand-out hooks on various artists’ records and projects, Carlitta has garnered much acclaim from collaborations which include an impressive list of notable and highly praised artists and producers.

Anthony Hamilton performing his 2003, breakout LP, Comin’ from Where I’m From. A heroine of this album, the tear-stained “Charlene,” also served as Hamilton’s muse when he needed to vent “I’m A Mess,” praise his lady, “Since I Seen’t You” or take care of things in the bedroom, “Float.” After seeing Hamilton, in person, finess all of the songs from this groundbreaking love suite, sitting down for a listen to the studio recording of Comin’ from Where I’m From will never be the same. – Eric Tullis

One cannot deny the appeal of Snarky Puppy. The 2014 Grammy-winning large ensemble originally from Denton, Texas, now residing in Brooklyn, New York, has been a whole bunch of fun for ten years now, playing a funky, swinging sound as ensnaring much deeper than their whimsical name would imply. Their work with N’Dambi, Chantee Cann, and Lalah Hathaway have been fun listens and winning over the multitudes with their high and tight jams.-Anthony Dean-Harris

Gretchen Parlato wields her voice as though a surgeon would if the only instruments she could use were feathers. She’s the strongest coo in the game. Among those impressive collaborations is that with bassist/guitarist/vocalist Alan Hampton, a quite charming gent whose as dazzling when he sings as when he comps. As a duo, they have the gathered warmth able to power small European villages, or at the very least entrance a crowd of Durhamites. -Anthony Dean-Harris

Sure, drummer Corey Fonville can go off and back Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah and Nicholas Payton (when they all weren’t backing Payton on his latest album, Numbers, and climbing charts). With them is saxophonist Braxton Cook whose solo work shows a charming sophistication in play that’s a welcome fit whenever he appears, so it’s a good thing he’s appearing here. -Anthony Dean-Harris

saturday 4/25 #AOCFEST ARTISTSOne way to look at Ben Williams is to say he’s versatile. He can hold things down as a good bassist should while providing his voice, and he’s done so for Pat Metheny in his Unity Band, for George Benson and the late Joe Sample, for happening folks on the scene like Etienne Charles and Otis Brown III, and in the Concord Jazz’s Next Collective. Yet as a leader, he’s been more than impressive. -Anthony Dean-Harris

She calls it “Ethio-Soul.” I found out about Ester Rada, early 2014 and was instantly mesmerized. I wanted to know more and definitely wanted to hear her live. Effortlessly combining Soul, Ethiopian Jazz, Funk and R&B, Israeli-born Rada is a musician, vocalist, songwriter and producer who understands her fans have more than one musical mood per day…and sometimes per hour. -Tess Mangum Ocaña, Sonic Pie Productions

Marc Cary is impressive on all forms of keys. He’s brilliant on the piano playing in the post-bop style and on the Rhodes, he takes music to such interstellar heights while holding to a sense of tradition that makes his talent truly unique. As he releases a new album, Cosmic Indigenous, embracing the depth Cary has shown throughout his career, it’ll be a true joy to see him get down in this direction. Things may get trippy, but Marc Cary can be impressive there, too. -Anthony Dean-Harris

Keyboardist/guitarist Matty Tavares, bassist Chester Hansen, and percussionist Alex Sowinski make bening this based look easy. Moving out of Sowinski’s dad’s basement into their own studio they built themselves, making two mixtapes online, signing to a label and releasing a for real album, III, crisscrossing the globe on hella tours, and making an album with Ghostface Killah just happened to be some stops along the way. They’re, to crassly put things into a narrative, jazz’s bad boys, but they’ve got the chops to back all that. -Anthony Dean-Harris

These days, it’s not enough to brand your group as just a hip-hop band. That fad may have ended back in 2006 when The Roots’ Game Theory LP made the titular declaration that partytime was over and that there needed to be more meaningful conversations expressed through music. If you can play it well, you should also be able to say it well. This is where the eight-piece, Chicago bunch, Sidewalk Chalk, picks up the slack.– Eric Tullis

Beautifully rebellious and refreshingly original, The Beast is one of the most imaginative bands to emerge from North Carolina’s burgeoning music scene. The Durham-based quartet fearlessly navigates worlds of hip hop and jazz with compelling lyrics, progressive compositions and a gripping live show.

#AOCFEST ARTISTS VIP ONLY sunday 4/26
One tried-and-true litmus test for a soul singer is to put her on a four-on-the-floor house music track just to see if her voice can project and radiate beyond most house producers’ robust, drum pageantry. Soul vocalist, Avery*Sunshine, first passed that test in 2005 with the release of “Stalker,” and again, in 2011 when she and house music legend, Terry Hunter, collaborated on a rejuvenated version of her hit single, “Ugly Part of Me.” If you’re one of the lucky, Art of Cool Fest VIP ticket holders you might get a taste of this upbeat flavor during Sunday’s hangover-styled, VIP Jazz Brunch performance, but more importantly, you’ll be treated to various, slow-burning rays of Avery*Sunshine’s affection, spanning from her most recent effort–the warm and love-forward The SunRoom LP, all the way back to her 2010, self-titled album, where she and AOCF headliner, Roy Ayers, cozy-up on the apropos, reworked, “Everybody Loves…,” and the uplifting “The Most.” If you’re really lucky, maybe Ayers will pop up for a cameo performance. But with or without him; cloudy day or not, you’ll have plenty of sunshine in this special setting to wrap up an adventurous weekend of jazz and soul memories. - Eric Tullis
