(A Continuing Saga of a Cluttered Office)
Submitted by an anonymous Verona resident
As I write this, much of this summer’s bounty signals the end of the growing season. Canning is still part
of the summer routine for some people. As I mentioned last month, a lot of activity centered around
our family’s wood-burning kitchen stove and canning was part of that.
Here on my desk is a pair of quart canning jars. But now these two jars serve a different purpose being
filled with more of my “treasures.” One contains a variety of colorful seashells, an assortment of seed
pods, and a pestle used for grinding spices. The unique items (to me) are a little part of life gathered
along the way. The other glass jar is protecting two completely dried onions. All that remains of the
once-plump orbs is their shiny bronze, fragile outer skins; yet somehow they retain their original round
shape and hold a special beauty.
One jar has a glass top and metal bail closing device. The trade mark on the bottom of the jar indicates
it’s from Hazel Atlas Glass Co. and was produced sometime between 1906-1955. The other is a Ball jar
with a glass lid and metal screw-on ring. The designs of the embossed word Ball changed ever so
slightly over years. The particular design can be used to identify when the jar was produced. By going
to the Ball web site, I found this jar’s design fits the period of 1933-1962.
Moving my thoughts away from the culinary, I glance up at the bulletin board. Prominently displayed are
a group of three items whose purpose is purely protection. I think I collected them because of their
commonality: their use; their size, all approximately 11”; and their elliptical shape.
The first, my favorite, is a large, snapping turtle shell. It is basically bone, formed by the turtle from
protein and various types of calcium. Its color offered protection in the simplest of way - camouflage.
The earth-tone hues served well in blending into the turtle’s environment as did the intricate
13-segmented design on top. It is nature providing a protective “helmet” from nature itself.
The second of this collection is a WWI GI-issue head-covering. Man’s protection from man. However,
this simple, Army-green steel helmet offered minimal protection at best. It has two straps which can be
adjusted. One circled around the inside to make it a “one size fits all” headgear. The other, a narrow
chin strap, held the helmet in place.
The third is an early 1970s bike helmet. Man’s protection from self. This white helmet is constructed of
“expanded polystyrene”. The amount of foam required for preventing serious head injury created a
bulky, uncomfortable-to-wear piece of equipment. I have never seen anyone wear this type of helmet.
When worn it must have made the person look like Speedy Alka Seltzer!
And so the collection and the remembering continues. Next month I’ll share more of the “treasure
trove” from the office corner. Till then, you remember . . . it’s good for you.

When we hear the word “declutter” we often
think about our home or a physical space. The
act of decluttering can be applied to our minds
as well. Unless you have addressed this, it’s
common for adults to have a mind full of
“clutter” or thoughts that take up “brain space”
and can take focus away from what we are
doing in the moment. Here’s an example:
Ginger has a stressful day and things didn’t go
as planned. When Ginger arrives home, her day
is still running through her head when she
greets her husband and sits down for dinner.
Because her mind is “full” and she is distracted
and Ginger isn’t fully listening or engaging in
the conversation. Soon she realizes she is too
mentally exhausted to even enjoy dinner.
Signs that your brain may be cluttered include:
Focusing on the negative
Hanging on to negative experiences
Being indecisive or feeling irritated
Feeling physically exhausted or ill
Having ruminating thoughts
Tips for Decluttering Your Brain:
1. Transfer your thoughts to
paper by making a list of tasks
or random thoughts floating
around in your brain.
your thoughts to paper doesn’t do the trick,
consider journaling to better explore yourself
and your personal beliefs. Journaling is great for
managing mental health.
and an action plan to meet those goals. Make
your actions reflect what is important to you.
4. Reduce or avoid multitasking to increase
productivity. Keep in mind we are not
multitaskers by nature and it can negatively
affect brain function.
benefits to breath work.
Chronicle, page 14 for more information.
7. Practice being decisive. Life presents us with a
series of choices, which can be as simple as milk
or water with dinner, or very complicated
which can stir up emotions. Avoid letting the
“what ifs” paralyze you from making a decision.
8. Challenge negativity. It’s very normal to be sad
or disappointed. Be sure to balance those
feelings with happiness and positivity. Focus on
to be compassionate and grateful.
9. Limit the amount of media intake. While it may
appear to be “news” or entertainment, it can
take up a lot of brain space and lead to worry.
10. Talk to someone you trust about how you are
feeling. This can give you clarity and direction.
11. Declutter physical space. Studies have shown
that clutter can affect our physical and mental
health. Read our June 2021 Chronicle, page 14
for more information.

Case Management
My name is Drake Deno, and I am incredibly happy to join the
wonderful staff here at the Verona Senior Center as a Case Manager.
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the
spring of 2020 with a major in Social Work and a minor in Theater. I
am really looking forward to diving into my first social work position
fresh out of college! My four years at Whitewater provided me with
several great experiences to prepare
me for the workforce, including a Case
Management internship, as well as a job
as a Supplemental Instructor for one of
my many social work classes. Outside
of work, you can catch me watching
movies, checking in on my favorite
sports teams (Bucks, Brewers, Badgers,
and Minnesota Vikings), and spending
time with family. Come by and say hello
if you are in the Senior Center. I look

The Woman Behind the Meals
Hello, readers!
For this month’s article, I wanted to take the opportunity to better
introduce myself and provide you with a little information about who I am,
and what I do.
To begin, my name is Torie and I am the Nutrition Coordinator here at VSC.
My role involves handling all food and nutrition-related aspects of our Meals
on Wheels, Drive Up, and “Grab and Go” meal programs. In addition to
coordinating meals, I also share informational articles on key health and
nutrition practices. I hold a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science and enjoy
using my knowledge to provide tasty, balanced meals to Verona area seniors and help promote
optimal health as we age. I am very eager to continue growing our meal programs and extending
our reach to more local seniors.
Besides my work at the Senior Center, I am also a first-time mother to a wonderful baby boy
named Soren. He just celebrated his first birthday at the end of July and so far, it has been such
an amazing journey to watch him learn and grow. He is the sweetest, most
gentle and caring soul I have met to date, and I cannot wait to see what the
future holds for him and for myself as his mother!
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a little better. I look
forward to working with the Verona Senior Center and TNT’s Catering to
continue making delicious meals convenient and easily accessible for you!

with friends. Grab a friend and a Grab & Go lunch at VSC.
3. Vary your veggies - Veggies are a great source of fiber. Check out the
free veggies in our edible garden!
4. Use herbs and spices - This is an easy way to enhance your meals. Summer is a

Come take a time traveling adventure with us back to early 1900s farming in Wisconsin -
in miniature! Bill Rettenmund will be showing off his collection of handmade miniature farm
equipment models and explaining both the intricate process of how they were created, and
also how the life size versions actually worked. Members who grew up around farms might
recognize, and might have even used some of these tools!
Bill has displayed his creations at multiple shows around Wisconsin. He also maintains a
rotating display at the Black Earth Historical Society each summer. You might recognize Bill
from our August 2018 meeting where he shared with us his experiences as a Vietnam
helicopter crew chief.
